I like how Krypto mentioned at the beginning, "who is the 'we' in this poem?" The beauty of this poem is that it applies to many groups of people, and to an extent, all people. A timeless classic!

It is a masterpiece and the use of it by Maya Angelou and her recitation the poem is Master ship work indeed because she puts in the necessary emotion the person who wears the mask and has had to always wear the mask and her take off on a story of a woman who rides the bus everyday and Fair demonstration example and analogy

Poems can be challenging because of a lack of description in the text. The title "We Wear the Mask" sets the reader for a question. I'm not a historian and I won't give you a historical context. Thanks 👍

Mini-store nothing but the smile because that is what they have always expected and the only thing many would accept from a lowly people... anything else would have been suspicious and would have needed to be put in check as is still the case it is very timely this poem

Zora talks about the different faces that the black race adopted and showed in one of her non-fiction essays that absolutely supports what you picked up from this poem as far as society in that regard. It was eye-opening and also extremely sobering and sad.

Was "black face" common in entertainment at the time? Could it be the way blacks were portrayed on stage is the same face that black people had to portray to the world in real life?

I just read an essay about the sixteen ways to look at black face by Hanif Abdurraqib. It was very interesting on a literal and metaphorical level.
