As a Chinese girl living in Australia, it is hilarious that your parents took you to the local Chinese restaurant in Dural for your birthday. That was such a normal thing for us to eat. My mum used to book birthday parties at the Maccas in Dural for us as a treat 😂 We are living inverse parallel lives!

Im a European who studied Chinese and moved to Beijing back then, now living in Hong Kong and I can't help but feel jealous that Amy's parents were so supportive and involved in her Chinese (food) journey. I barely talk to my folks anymore and they show no interest in anything China, it's bittersweet. Love love love the videos, I essentially copied Amy's Xi'An adventure in April and cant wait for spicy Chengdu next month

Singapore Noodles is authentically Chinese. The dish was invented by a chef in Hong Kong around 1950/1960 and became well known for using curry powder in a non-curry dish. Very soon, it was in every restaurant's menu. Some of the chefs in that era emigrated to the States, the UK, Australia etc., and the rest is history.

Singapore Noodles is an invention by a Cantonese chef in Hong Kong!!! Its not from Singapore, even though the name is confusing. So you are still having a Chinese food adventure 👍🏼 ‘Like the Hainanese chicken rices and Mongolian lambs of the world, Singapore noodles weren't invented in the place after which they're named. Instead, the dish was created in Hong Kong sometime after WWII by Cantonese chefs who were keen to find a use for curry powder - a recent addition to the southern Chinese pantry via British colonies. The dish was named 'Singapore noodles' as a nod to the cosmopolitan nature of both city-states.’

This was very nostalgic for me too. We had a Chinese restaurant right next to a movie theater, and the big family treat was to see a matinee then go have Chinese food next door. And it had a huge fish tank.....It was always my choice for birthday meals. Same chopstick wrappers too.....What a treat to see you with your folks reminiscing. Savor it. Those memories are precious after they're gone.

I am a Sydneysider but have never been down to Dural to try out the Mountain View Restaurant - and I am only about 40 minutes away. Every time I watch one of Amy's video, she brings a smile to my face for some strange reason. Must be her absolute positive vibes of "clean goodness" that she radiates. She makes my day!

Your family is always so warm and hilarious. The banter over food commentary is so funny. It's so relieving to know that the restaurant's foods still tastes the same, even after 20+ years. A lot of restaurants could go under or be forced to change their tastes or menu to survive, and luckily it didn't happen to them.

hi Amy, i have been watching your videos for a few years. I am from Beijing originally, have been living in Perth, Australia for the 21 years. My parents are still in Beijing. I wanted to say despite all the food adventure you have shared with everyone, what most touching me is your amazing relationship with your mum and dad. Not sure if you have felt and been expressed that the family relationship is actually very cold in the Chinese culture. I can never even imagine I could be so comfortable with my own parents like you way you do. I envy you, and I admire you. I also have full respect to your parents, for their openness in their hearts towards themselves and their children. Watching those beautiful moments when you shared with your mum and dad, on one hand makes me feel sad as my culture and the history of the country has had so much restrictions on people's emotion to be expressed in love and harmony which has led people has no idea how to express that part of this emotion; On the other hand, I feel very touched to see and feel the love between your family, as it is inspiring me to know it is still exist and can be expressed so naturally. I hope one day I will be able to break through this emotional jail I have put myself in, and bring more joy and authenticities into my family and myself.

A little bit of noodle trivia for you and your mom... the "Singapore Noodle" dish that you ate is actually a Hong Kong dish of what a chef at the time believed was a dish that embodied the flavours of Singapore. If you go to Singapore, it is not a common dish at all unless you go to a Chinatown. Yes, Singapore has a Chinatown.

It's so funny how Australian Chinese food and American Chinese food seems so different but also exactly the same. My go to's are chicken and broccoli with brown sauce or Sichuan chicken

The food seems to be more a “ South East Asia” chinese food. Though not an authentic “China” chinese food, it is equally delicious. Because of the freshness and the love of Australians for freshness, everything cook is delicious. Very proud of Australia for maintaining the healthy lifestyle and become one of the lead countries in healthy lifestyle.

It’s actually nice to have something unchanged from your childhood. I grew up in Shanghai and then lived in the US for 8 years, when I got back, none of my favorite restaurants from my childhood still exist, not a single one. Although I have to admit that those new ones are objectively better, but sometimes you just miss that one dish from that old restaurant.

I am a Chinese person who lived in Australia about 30 years ago, and now I reside in Florida. The Chinese food in Australia is absolutely awesome, no matter where you go, city or suburbs. In America, most Chinese food is fake, prepared by some amateur Chinese cooks who have never taken formal lessons. They make dishes like barbecue ribs, chop suey, egg drop soup, and chow mein without noodles. None of these dishes are found in Australian Chinese restaurants or in China, for that matter. Even the steamed dim sims in a typical Australian fish and chip shops are better than most Chinese food places in America.

This is actually really interesting because in America, these are not the typical (westernized) Chinese food dishes people get as takeout. We're more into the sweet and sour chicken flavor profile. Fascinating! Also looks delicious!!

I moved to Australia in the 80s and the first Chinese restaurants in Melbourne in those days were Cantonese restaurants. I remember the dish we had were Ginger/spring oninon stir fried crap or lobster, fresh vegetable (usually broccoli) stir fry with beef, seafood (often prawn, fish fillet, scallop) with vegetable, deep fried baby chicken, stir fry pea shoot, HK style roast duck, Char siu pork, roast pork and chicken feet. The meal usually served with soup first. The fry rice and sweat and sour pork/beef were usually popular for Australian, we generally did not order them in the restaurant. The selection of Chinese food were limited and even variety of vegetable were limited.

This feels very nostalgic for me too, we had a Chinese buffet next to the cinema called Dragon King that was The Go-To place if you had a birthday or a special occasion, it closed a few years ago but it’s still there next to the cinema which has seen better days. The cinema was the place to go back in the Harry Potter days, I remember people used to queue up outside overnight waiting for the films to be released.

I migrated to Australia from China two decades ago. At that time, it was difficult to find authentic Chinese restaurants in Sydney, except those of Cantonese cuisine. Now when walk around Chinatown in Syd, nice Chinese restaurants all over the place, Sichuan, Shanghai, Xibei, Beijing, Dongbei styles, you name it. Big change.

I can definitely appreciate this. After I came back from living in China and eating pretty awesome Chinese food every day for years, I actually started to try new dishes in my American Chinese restaurants. Before I used to always get the same thing, but now I peruse the menu for longer and try different combinations and flavors. It is also interesting to me that there are food trends in China that seemed so common that just don't make it to the states, or take 10 years to get here. Malatang is still hard to find here and I was eating that in Beijing in 2012. I'm looking forward to when Hainan coconut chicken hot pot comes to the US.

Not too sure if anyone has mentioned this already but Singapore noodles or rather Singapore-style noodles are actually a Cantonese creation and a common dish in Hong Kong. So, it is different from 星洲米粉 that is popular in the Singapore/Malaysia area. The Hong Kong version has curry powder while the Singapore/Malaysia version doesn't.

Good day Amy. I had a roasted duck in Shandong province before with pastry wraps. But, I also had the meat with the native green radish/carrrot, which was sweet, crispy and had texture of a sweet melon.

Wow the dishes they serve at this restaurant are so much like those in restaurants I used to wait when I was a student back in the late 70s. Kwantung palace and also Chinese Ambassador restaurant in Parramatta. I miss the real stuffed crab claws, king prawn cutlets and fried scallops. Yum.

I’m a Chinese who grew up in China and have now lived in Australia for 20yrs. I love Australian Chinese food! It’s not authentic but I just think of it as a different cuisine. It’s delicious! My family’s fav are honey chicken, sweer & sour pork and veg spring rolls!

Local neighbourhood Aussie Chinese food is AWESOME. I still have fond memories of going to the local Chinese restaurant. So exotic back then hahahahaha. This is 40 years ago before the introduction of Thai, Japanese, Lebanese etc etc Sweet and Sour Pork, Mongolian Lamb, Beef and Blackbean sauce and ofcourse Special Fried Rice were our families favourites and the Singapore Noodles.

We ate a bit different Chinese food in my childhood: fried chicken with pineapple, fried rice with egg, pigs ears salad, meat with vinegar, and for a dessert it was some hot fried dough with bananas (crispy and with caramel). Yummy yummy. It was in Russia, Siberia

Sounds like a place worth visiting especially for the Peking Duck! Also Singapore noodles is served everywhere around the world (including neighbouring Malaysia) except Singapore just as ‘Mee Siam’ is served in Singapore (and Malaysia) except in Thailand (Siam).

This was so wholesome! I'm from Europe and my nuclear family did like Chinese or other Asian food, but for special occasions, especially with larger family numbers we'd usually have Croatian, Greek or Italian food. Now that I've lived in China I can obviously see and taste the differences from the authentic food, but I am lucky in that I live close to a Chinese hub so to say and we actually get authentic food here. And were I grew up we now also have a Chinese place run by native Chinese people and they even serve some of that food in vegan form which is how I found them in the first place. That Chinese restaurant has turned to the new haunt of my nuclear family, which is awesome because I can have authentic Chinese food and my family loves it too!
