In late October we headed to Tijeras, New Mexico to attend the first ever NICA mountain bike race in New Mexico. This event was the culmination of a ton of hard work by a lot of people and it was amazing to see it come together. There were 120 student athletes representing 14 teams from around the state and we can't wait to see what they do next year!

I appreciate what these people are doing, but the fact of the matter is that MTB is mostly an upper middle class sport. Even entry level race bikes are what, 4k? Most Americans don't even have a grand for an emergency. Then throw in cost of travel - only well off parents can make this happen for kids.

You definitely aren't wrong that MTB is expensive, but most of these teams have loaner bikes for the kids and scholarships to cover travel costs and entry fees. And because NICA courses are pretty much always rideable on a hardtail, kids can be competitive on bikes that cost a LOT less than 4k. A couple of the kids here have bikes that expensive, but it's definitely not the majority. NICA has done a ton for making the sport more accessible, although there is still work to do.

How exciting! My son started racing last year in 6th grade. He finished top 10 in every race on the Georgia cycling association circuit on the oconee composite team which broke off from NICA. This year he podiumed 3 out of the 4 races. He also raced the chain busters circuit snd podiumed in every race and will win the circuit for over all points. My question is he needs a faster bike and I’m just not sure where to go from here for XC racing. Would you have any advice? Right now he’s on a specialized camber but it’s coming in at 32lbs. Any advice would help. Thanks!

NICA is amazing. I have thoroughly enjoyed helping coach these kids as an assistant coach. The confidence they gain each time they ride is amazing. Here in Utah we have 6 Regions each one bursting with kids. It’s exciting to see a sport expand so rapidly with so many amazing kids and parents too. Thank you for promoting such an amazing group. The New Mexico NICA will grow so fast it’s going to be exciting. Kudos to all involved to bring NICA to your state.

Awesome. My boy love riding with his nica high school team. Recently he just completed his 2nd season in the league. He'll be starting next season with his new bike, so it will be exciting. It's great to have nica around despite some of the problems that goes with it. Some states are dropping nica and doing their own thing. But I'm impressed with our league. If I had the time I would be a ride leader at least. Its amazing how many show up to race. The pit zone is a fun place to check out what everyone else is riding. Awesomeness you guys got to see the race in person.

#MoreKidsOnBikes! Shout out to Syd & Macky! It was *YOUR* video in 2019 that inspired me to get involved with my local NICA League! I into my 4th season with the NorCal league. We just kicked off our pre-season (we’re a “Spring” league). We have nearly 100 MS and HS kids that come out to ride every weekend! Our race division has kids riding from ~50 different teams (specific HS’s or Composite teams). Such a great to support kids and be engaged with the community!

Nice! That's awesome they've got a league now. This is my 4th or 5th season coaching NICA in Lake Tahoe. I absolutely love doing it. It's so great to see them get stronger and more confident year after year.

I did my first race this year and there was a bunch of NICA kids in my class, I finished 5th out of 13 in my class and was honored to be the first adult to finish, the top 4 were all NICA kids who were seriously fast. I tried to hold their wheel and stay in the breakway up the first punchy climb (this course started immediately with a short steep climb) but was seeing stars at the top haha.

Very cool! Be prepared for really fast growth. when we started the Pennsylvania leage (PICL) 7 years ago, our team was 12 riders and 6 coaches. We are now the largest team of 120 riders and 70 coaches, and would easily be in the 200's if not for putting a hold on registrations due to a worry about having enough coaches. We run 7 squads to accomadate the different skill levels. League wise, the first few years we could have middle school and high school race on the same day. As every team is much larger now, 4 years ago we had to switch to middles school on Saturdays and High school on Sundays. New Mexico ICL WILL have that happen too, and it will be fantastic!

Thank you for covering this. My son has raced the past 3 years and my daughter raced as a Freshman this year in the Colorado league. Such a fun and supportive atmosphere to be part of. My wife and I also became level 1 coaches which has me out on my bike more than any other year. Love seeing the Taos riders at the state race this year as well.

No issues with assembly for me ru-vid.comUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".

In Minnesota, racing is over 2 days, with high school on sundays. There is also over 1000 racers. The Minnesota league started in 2012 and split from NICA last year. This year, state was disgusting with temps around freezing, it was a combination of snowing, raining, and windy. It was held at Red Head mountain bike park in Chisholm, MN; this is in the northern part of the state in what is called the Iron Range. Peanut butter was the descriptor for the dirt conditions, everyone who raced looked like they had explosive diarrhea. The jersey manufacturers were happy because there will be lots of new kit bought next year - No jersey came out fully clean due to the iron content of the dirt.

Kids today have it great. My kids (6th and 7th grade) are on a "travel" MTB team RenoDevo, and I help coach their NICA team. I wish I had those when I was a kid. I think in total they did about 15-20 races this year.

So much fun to watch. Here in Marin, CA, we have quite a few really good MTB teams, with around 65 kids in the team at our local high school; mostly boys, but some of the girls are fierce and tough. My 8 year old daughter fell in love with Mountain Biking when she was 7, and has done a three week MTB camp each of the last two summers. It has been AMAZING for her self confidence, and also, she's small for her age, but really strong, so she crushes the hills with ridiculous power to weight and aerobic capacity, and can beat the bigger kids. Father daughter rides are my favorite time to spend with her, and we have amazing trails and rides to the top of Mount Tam, or out to the beaches where we can take a break and have a picnic. Amazing bonding experience for any parent that gets out and rides with their kids.

The problem with watching XC is the same as for road. It's about as exciting as watching paint dry unless you have helicopters or drones. Although the Macky running with a stick shots are pretty good. You should have just strapped a Gopro to one of the racers.

I have been a Coach w/NICA for the past 2 years, it is the most enjoyable thing I ever did, but what really made it so rewarding this year is seeing the kids that were with us last year come back, and to see the progression and confidence they now have, it is so incredible. I can't wait till 2023 to do it all over again.

so cool to see the younger kids racing bikes. in the US the major team sports dominate so thoroughly that its much harder to get traction on non-team sports. I race and am involved in youth Nordic ski racing and Skimo( ski mountaineering racing) here in Montana. the kids on the local Nordic team here often travel 10hrs to races. they are so far way that the team often has to leave on Thursday for weekend races. but, the future of these sports is with the kids, and they need as much support as they can get, whether its MTB or Nordic, or Skimo !

You guys should totally come to a utah nica race. It’s absolutely crazy that we went from smaller than this race to having state champs with over 5000 racers and that’s with only taking the top 20-37 from each category. Nica is such an awesome experience
