As a local living in Batam, I honestly don't know what to do here either... all I do is stay at home, go to school, or go do school work in a random cafe in Grand Batam lol
Holiday Inn used to be better, if not one of the better hotels on the island. However in the recent years before COVID happened, the hotel rooms starting to be dated, they did go through a few rounds of minor "room renovations". After COVID happened, me and my family figured that Holiday Inn was no longer worthwhile to revisit and risk a few nights there. Batam, pretty much for me and my family is lepak, eat seafood, shop a bit, massage a bit, then head back to SG...
Batam really very nice. I been to Nagoya Hill shopping centre, quite nice. 😊 I also wrote on a cruise where I have some karaoke singing party on the ride.
We just stayed in Batam. We stayed at the Panbil Residence Apartment, it was great (with gym, swimming pool, restaurants), we just enjoyed not doing much ahah. Went to see Nongsa beach, went to Bintan for an afternoon and went to the Panbil Nature Reserve. We had a few swims where we stayed, and plenty of food. :)
Maybe you could try I hotel Baloi (many Singaporean stay there) next time, it is next to BCS mall, A2 foodcourts, many massage shophouses and within walking distance to Grand Batam Mall. Holiday Inn is too far, nothing much nearby.
I stayed in Aston Hotel Batam & Residence. The hotel service is good and inclusive breakfast. Breakfast till 10am so you won't need to wake up early. 😂
If I did go to Batam, I wouldn't spend time in shopping malls or massages, or stay in a western-chain hotel. I would stay in a good local hotel, visit some kampungs if I can get to one, and eat at a local food outlet - after checking if it looks decent (hygenic) enough. In short - I will try my best to avoid all places catering to tourists.

Batam, really, nothing much. Except for the kuih lapis. That's all. But you should try to go to Barelang Bridge. The seaview is nice. And also please get a driver, they can recommend you cheap and nice food.

I only stay in Montigo Resorts in Batam and I hardly leave the resort unless to have seafood outside. Hahahahaha there’s really nothing so I rather splurge on the accommodations.
