Suck it, The Internet. In this glorious approximately one-hour podcast we refute all of you to PROVE how right we were about EVERYTHING all year long. And if you have any disagreements with anything we have to say, rest assured in the knowledge that you're WRONG and we're RIGHT and you can, as we said at the outset of this description, SUCK IT.

To be fair, I honestly think that funhaus (especially what they do on the know) is the closest thing I've got to actual games journalism. Professionalism and research included while still remembering that these are video games and don't have to be taken that seriously

You guys may or may not have been right all year (w/ HL3 I couldn't agree more), but one thing's for certain, everyone in the FH community has been really appreciative of the dedication that you all have put into entertaining us with really fun and engaging content all year long. I think that you guys leaving IG and joining the RT family was one of the greatest things to happen to RU-vid without a shadow of a doubt; gracing us with Gabor, scrobbles and Baby-Hunter to leave a concerning grin plastered on my face throughout all of your videos. Thank you Funhaus for contributing to this really great year.

+Victor_714 so you still watch the content? That's like despising a music genre and listening to it all the time. Why don't you just watch IG videos all the time if you miss it so much or better yet find some other group? Or maybe your just here seeking for that attention as everyone can see you bombarding the comment section.. It's painfully obvious

The36th Maybe but just because a kid is brought up in a certain environment, doesn't mean that child will follow it. It's a shitty thing to do to create a stereotype when it's not true. You've also got to think that it's good when an orphan is adopted by a loving couple, gay or not.
@Jontman42

I think the addiction thing boils down to this: If these companies are trying to exploit people with addictive personalities, then people should know about that, and in the case of videogames people might not know about that.
@ImAlexGoodwin
@ImAlexGoodwin 8 лет назад
+Jontman42 I agree. There needs to be a line that's drawn somewhere, but "where" exactly is hard to place because obviously the companies want to make a game that you'll play more; they are actually trying to make an addicting game. They want you to buy their content. It's like when FO4 announced they were bringing back vats - they're bringing back a gameplay mechanic that everyone was addicted to because they knew it would sell more copies. It's not like companies have in-house meetings saying "People are addicted to A, B, and C so our game is going to do those things so we can make money." Or maybe they are. It's a really fine line between that being their job to make good, replayable content and them going out of their way to induce a mental disorder for profit. How would you determine that? It's a very tricky situation.
@Jontman42
@Jontman42 8 лет назад
I'mAlex Yes the line between "trying to exploit" and simply "trying to make a good game" is difficult, especially if people see "good game" as something you want to spend a lot of time on. There definitely are more obvious cases like free-to-play games with a billion micro transactions but no real "value" to the game, like some mobile games, but most games would be pretty vague.
@Lomhev115
@Lomhev115 8 лет назад
+I'mAlex You make a good point but when it comes down to it the intent is kind of irrelevant because the game will have the same affect on people weather or not the addictive gameplay was intended or not so honestly what would end up happening (most likely) is that warning would be issued in an unskippable section of your game startup in every game. And for legal reasons companies will end up going back through their created games and putting warnings in them too. This might sound annoying but it boils down to the same reason they put warnings on cigarette boxes.
@Jontman42
@Jontman42 8 лет назад
Lomhev115 I agree that practically the intent is irrelevant, and it makes more sense to just warn people in general instead of blaming game devs for trying to exploit such people. A videogame having addictive elements isn't inherently _wrong_, but warning of such elements has its place.
@Lomhev115
@Lomhev115 8 лет назад
+Jontman42 The main reason I support it is simply to support my fellow man because not everyone knows everything you do nor should you expect them too. Everyone should know of the dangers that come with every day objects. Because if people who have never touched video games before suddenly get into them and don't know of the addictive qualities of them, then they may miss the symptoms. I know that if you are made aware of something that could happen while playing you have a much higher chance of detecting it.

@TheGroucho66
@TheGroucho66 8 лет назад
+weaver900 I find it interesting trying to work out what political/ideological principles the guys - and gal - have at Funhaus. Generally speaking, in regards tot the video games industry, they seem fairly pro capitalist/laissez faire. However I've heard them once or twice mock those who disagree with socialist ideas like free health care and education.
@Frazster5
@Frazster5 8 лет назад
+TheGroucho66 they seem to want to have a socialist society mixed with an capitalist society, similar to Britain and other European countries. I would say that, so far in my personal opinion, that this sort of mix is the best way to have a society. Free health care and education so everyone has a relatively even playing field when it comes to capitalism. Again, totally personal and I don't want to force it down anyone's throats.
@Soccerboss237
@Soccerboss237 8 лет назад
I think it's similar to the concept of coercive paternalism, where sometimes people are better at assessing the rationality of other people's decisions rather than their own due to cognitive bias, so the government is there to prevent us from making bad decisions that will harm us. Now whether you agree with that is different I'm just saying this case reminds me of it
@mikeorvik9483
@mikeorvik9483 8 лет назад
+Frazster5 Pretty much every western country is at least some part socialist. People tend to forget it because they've grown up in it and accept the US as the standard for capitalism. A mix of the two is really the only way western culture can exist as we know it.
@bangthehankers1985

One thing that annoys me about Funhaus is that they act as if game devs can do no wrong. Even when devs do fuck up, Funhaus sweeps it under the rug and acts like it's no big deal. An example of this is with Battlefront 3. Everyone knew the game was gonna be shit, but Funhaus acted as if it was no big deal and that the game was fine. Lo and behold the game is panned and they probably stopped playing it already. While being over critical towards development teams is harmful to gaming, so is acting as if everything is fine and nothing should change.

Anything that triggers a reward response in the brain can become addicting, literally anything. Some people get that from self harm, others from drinking themselves to death and others from video games. Computer/internet addiction is a thing, why not video games? I am not saying that if someone's life gets ruined because they were playing the game, they should be given a compensation from the publisher, but it is a growing problem. And with games becoming more and more realistic, it's not that far-fetched to assume it will start occurring more often. Anyone remembers the South Park episode on World of Warcraft? People like that do exist, sitting in front of the computer, getting morbidly obese to a point moving away from the computer hurts them both physically and mentally.

I like how when you get in arguments/discussions you start putting your point in such a way that you go past the part of what you actually think, but still try your hardest to defend it because you already stated your stance. It happens to me a lot actually, where you go "Hey this is my thought on this." But someone says something slightly different from what you believe and slightly off topic, but enough so that it could be interpreted as being on topic. At that point you go way beyond what the discussion was about. For example I can use addiction. You start talking about how addiction, but end up talking about freedom and rights. Then again to make valid points you have to cover all the things that go directly or indirectly with those things. What I found out with me is I have to pause and try and find out what the original topic was. In a way it just brings things in endless circles and talking about them does nothing, but making things happen or talking about changes that could happen and how it affects it things is productive. I think the society today is all talk and that's our biggest problem. I really hope they do put "Game Responsibly" in videos games, because who cares? That's not affecting your freedom. You still make the choice to keep playing, but maybe that little message helps you. Even if it only helps one person out of billions, its a step in the right direction. We need more actions and less speculations. In the end of it all you learn nothing by saying things, but changing them shows what actually happens. #trollbait

I have a very addictive personality. I LOVE Fallout: New Vegas. But I do not believe in games being addictive like cigarettes or heroin. In my opinion, this Russian guy doesn't deserve any money from Bethesda. I know that I'm going to want to play it for days, but despite my addictive personality, I can stop myself. I really don't believe that not playing a video game will cause physical or SEVERE mental problems. Example: Quitting smoking = Anger, weakness, sickness, etc. Quitting heavy drugs = shakes, excessive sweating, extreme emotions, etc. Quitting video games = boredom. =\
@The36th
@The36th 8 лет назад
+Spike Kastleman [...] *But I do not believe in games being addictive like cigarettes or heroin.* [...] Wrong. Your brain works by creating neuron paths which encode your consciousness, memories, experience, skills, etc. Besides that, it also obviously encode entire "software" which control your body without your conscious knowledge/decision (like for example heartbeating). Addiction is just "neuropath" created when You do/take something which is directly making you feel good about that. For your brain it doesn't matter if its a game or drugs like alhocol, nicotin, heroin or maybe hormone ruch during sex or adrenaline rush. Making you good(stimulating brain) + not associating it directly with causing damage = neuron path which encode need for that factor(a.k.a addiction/habit, You name it) .

I've studied addiction for many years, and what I've found is that actually most things can trigger the wet stuff in your brain to become hooked. It's just that the mundane things, such as watching TV, drinking tea, etc, go unnoticed. Nearly every corporation that's selling something is trying to tap into that primitive area that gets us addicted. Whether it be payday loans or branded lipstick. I think it's important to understand that addiction, in most cases, is not necessarily down to ones 'addictive personality', but more the conditions of how the person lives. As one of you touched upon, the person with no social life is more likely to form an addiction to watching videos of RU-vid personalities. With video games, it's probably a similar thing. I believe that addiction can be the result of indulging in a mimic of reality that's fills a void in your life (such as an Internet-based social life), or an escape from a harsh reality as is the case with many drug addicts. I do believe video games should always come with a warning, but the bigger picture is that we as individuals must realise the superficially of such things, like seeking satisfaction through reward systems, and become more attuned to the things that really matter, and I think the result of that would be less addictions to these things all around. But hey, I've smoked cigarettes like a mad man all my life. The best thing we can do is attempt progress ourselves, as opposed to demand everyone around flash warnings in our faces.

MGS 4 had warning messages during the loading times between each act. Simple things like "You should take a break every few hours to rest your eyes." and "Smoking may cause cancer." To be honest, whenever that "take a break" message showed up I really did take it seriously and went for a glass of water to stretch out. (Not mentioning the fact that those download times took more than a few minutes get done) Like James says, it costs really nothing to put something like that in and it can save both parties of stupid situations like people playing for days at a time.

This is probably the most interesting video I've ever watched on RU-vid. That may sound a bit sad, but it was really interesting hearing these guys have a proper conversation about addiction and whether or not society and the industry should perhaps take it more seriously. I have a great interest in psychology, and some points brought up - particularly by James and Lawrence - were very interesting. I agree with James that a screen saying "game responsibly" or something to that effect would be a worthwhile thing to do. Most people would just skip past it of course, but for some it could be that subconscious "voice" that is blocked for them, which would usually stop and make them question if they do need to take a step back from the game and make use of some of that time elsewhere. Good podcast Funhaus. I recently showed a couple of my friends some of your videos to show what they've been missing out on and now they are regular viewers like myself.

As an undergrad in psychology, I can totally understand James' concern at 58:00. It's actually one of the pressing issues in clinical psychology and it is nice to see that James and (I hope) many others start to view mental disorders as not necessarily a negative thing but just something that is different.

Adam wants a world where we as the consumers have to put our faith in the goodwill of the companies trying to sell us products, that they aren't trying to dupe us into something. (Big Tobacco etc.. etc..). Regulation is necessary to protect the consumer.

I get what James is saying about the PNG that games may be addictive in nature. Its the same thing with the warning on seizures and the one that states to rest every hour around ten minutes. Personally I've never had a seizure due to light patterns or really have felt tired but still take breaks around every two hours if I am playing for long periods of time. However, I still appreciate companies putting that info in there to warn potential buyers about these different medical issues.

I was proofreading a psychology text book just before xmas and it had a chapter on addiction and a section for studies that were done for video games, the gist of it was, people who get addicted to video games already have addictive personalities. Also, other studies done looking for a correlation between violence and video games (over the last 17 years or so) found 'normal' well adjusted people were no more likely to have violent tendencies after playing violent games and it only slightly increased the risk in people who had already demonstrated a more violent personality .

Bruce is scientifically right. Anything that generates a sufficient pleasure response can be addicting. Addiction boils down to a learned response without control. It's simple learning behavior, you learn something is good and you constantly crave it because your brain itself is telling you you need more.

I don't really want to blabber on about addiction but as someone who has experienced it and thoroughly looked into why it happens, the common factor of all addiction isn't the thing you are using, it's the experience and the 'high' you get from it that you become addicted to. Your body and/or mind cross a line from casual use to needing that experience or high to function. You said yourselves before about Call Of Duty having a reward system of having loud guitar noises and a big WELLDONE YOU WINZ HAVE A COOKIE every time you do something to make the player feel accomplished from playing well, that is basically how it works in general with addiction whether it be to substance, drink, gambling, skydiving, anything. Moderation is a healthy way of living with anything in life, too much is bad (even too much fruit causes problems). You just gotta take a step back occasionally, be smart about what you're doing and think. Anyways good Dude Soup as always, hope you guys have a good Christmas/etc x

Honestly, FunHaus has gotta be one of the best things to come out of RU-vid this year. In addition to your fucking /hilarious/ game plays, you guys are probably the only legitimate source of gaming journalism outside of TB or Rev3 (if they're even still around, I haven't seen them anywhere). In fact idk if those guys even count at all, because you're all incredibly quick to point out that rumor are just that- RUMORS- while still offering your own very well-thought-out and informed opinions, very often going against the grain of most RU-vidrs' mindsets, which causes a lot of controversy and debate in the comments section. Plus, you guys remember that all-important but so often forgotten axiom: GAMES DON'T ALWAYS HAVE TO BE TAKEN SO DAMN SERIOUSLY. On a side note, y'all have also spawned one of the most respectful and good-natured comments sections in all of RU-vid. So thanks guys, for making 2015 an awesome year for RU-vidrs.

I see one problem with Bethesda adding in the warning screen. For legal reasons, the lawyers can now say "look...they knew it was addictive enough that they added a screen after the fact". This would almost ensure them as targets for multiple cases.
