I didn't enjoy re-living this horrific experience but I felt important to share how we were scammed for nearly £12k recently. I think others should be aware of these scams that are doing the rounds and if I can prevent someone else having to go through what I went through then it's been worth making this video.

I had a scammer attempt the same with me today. It seems that they were trying to reset my bank account password to get in. Log story short, I asked the guy to tell me my bank account balance (which he couldn't). I then asked him to tell me some of my past transactions. He then disconnected the call.
@ClarkeLife

Oh well done for spotting it! I bet you felt relieved!
@AndreOutlaw

@@ClarkeLife Very relieved and very upset. The more I thought about how much trouble someone could be in (not being able to pay rent or mortgage, possible bounced checks, not being able to buy groceries or to pay any other bill that may be due) the more upset I became. After speaking with my bank they've set things up so that nothing can be done without me calling them and having them ask for a separate password that has been set up for me (this is outside of the normal online password). This shouldn't be an issue since I can't remember speaking with anyone from any bank account that I've had more than once every 5 years or so (I'm a very low maintenance customer).

It’s called spoofing. Scammers can spoof any phone number, company websites, e-mail, etc. to make it look legitimate. That’s what I learned watching RU-vid videos about other people being scammed. I got an authentic-looking e-mail from Bank of America claiming my account had been compromised and I needed to click on a link within that e-mail and reset my password. I got suspicious, so I phoned the B of A phone number on my account and asked what was going on and they said it was a scam and to forward that fake e-mail to their fraud department. Since then I have received calls from fake IRS agents, fake social security representatives, etc. Scammers are everywhere.
@chantalsscaleisafibber
@chantalsscaleisafibber 2 года назад
@@katarina1852 I've heard that before they realise it loads of people click the link and as soon as they put a new password in their bank accounts have literally been e. emptied by scammers and I remember one person lost about$16,000.00as they waited4or5hrs then called the bank and because they clicked the link and waited to long to contact the bank the money was lost. They may appeal but the stress it causes is horrific. Its no wonder people often go to the extremes of committing suicide due to these disgusting scammers as they may already have fragile mental health issues and the fact that they have now been told that they have lost all their money literally sends them over that pivotal edge. Just beyond sad.
@katarina1852
@katarina1852 2 года назад
@@chantalsscaleisafibber Yes! If you click on the link and reset your password they can see what it is. Then they can access your account. It’s so scary and there are many elderly who are vulnerable. They may not have seen all the different scams that are out there. There are computer virus scammers where you’ll get a pop-up window on your computer screen telling you a virus has been detected. They ask that you phone a Microsoft technician but the number will be someone (usually in India) working in a warehouse with dozens of other scammers making money by charging you fees for removing a virus that isn’t even there. Then of course the IRS scams where they say you owe back taxes and to avoid jail time, you have to pay immediately (to the scammer of course). And the list goes on and on.
@grassytramtracks
@grassytramtracks Год назад
I absolutely disagree with people who just say that scam victims are stupid - you clearly aren't - you quizzed the caller, but the scam was pretty sophisticated. As it was a Friday, I guess you were quite tired as well - no one is at peak mental performance all of time, everyone gets tired and hungry, and this compromises your judgement. My mother once clicked a link on a text claiming to be from her mobile provider, and was just about to enter her mobile details, until, at the last second, she thought wait a minute, stopped, and checked her my3 account. Her bill had gone through, and she realized it was a scam, it was at 9 or 10 in the evening, so we were both tired. Scam stories, like yours, are a chance to learn and avoid scams in the future, not just to deride people as stupid. I absolutely agree, that on the back of bank cards it should say warning: scammers can fake this number to pretend to be us. Do not trust a phonecall just because it says it's from our number. We will never call you and ask you to transfer money or hand over your log in details

I always thought I would know exactly what to do and would be switched on enough to hang up but they just caught me at a bad time I think!

Sorry Nicola to hear of your experience. I run a small business and get regular phone calls from the "Bank" and "HMRC" your advice later in the post was spot on. when I get a call from these people I hang up the call, use another phone, or wait 10 -15 mins then call my bank. Thanks for sharing this.

Hopefully the more people that are wary of these scammers then the less upset they will cause!
