I Raise a Glass in salute to my Dad SFC Byrd who served under Hal Moore both in Korea and in Vietnam.. My dad wod have turned 99 years old on 09/16/2023... He was a Decorated Veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam...,He swam ashore D-Day on Omaha Beach, fought in the Battle of Bugle, fought a SS Division in Czechoslovakia at the end of War War II, Fought all three years in Korea.. Had many close calls but survived the horrors of War... RIP... Your at Peace with all your follow Brothers in Arms... Your Loving Son
Mister , Keith Byrd , “So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none. When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision. When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.” ~ Chief Tecumseh” So you know, we recall him and many others. 9th Infantry 7th SF Grp RVN 1972-1975 US Army Stand tall young man...
@@DonB.-Mulefivefive My Father taught me how to be the Man I am Today. Time I travel the road of memories of long ago, Blowing in the wind, no time for tears, Star dust wishes, dreams that fade away, In the emptiness of the moment, A drift in timeless melancholy before weary eyes, Revealing that which is not seen. My soul looks back in wonder, It embraced the limitless possibilities, Inspiration not blinded by the passage of time, Sullen and reflective, foretell its barren journey, Time, master of illusion invoke images so telling portrayed, Its somber poetry, a ripple of melody ripe, Time master of deception, floating on a velvety background, In the intricate web of life, Time passes on, It can enchant you, captivate you, And arouse your sense of immortality, Or is it just a mirage or an ever changing charade, The master of illusion, the master of deception. Time itself an apparition, Revealing what is not seen so telling portrayed, In artistry and vision evolved by the master of illusion....Time, For in the end we we find our Immortality passing, Traveling the road in cadence and lyrical whispering, Of the blowing wind in the passage of time, For only Time lives on in the end.... Hal Moore - 1922-2017, passed away 3 days before his 95 birthday. Rest in Peace Lt. General Harold 'Hal' Moore - Great Warrior, Leader, Father and Patriot.
He did what he could to save his men I know what that's like is somewhere between the possible and can't be done in the situation he was in but he did it by the way I was there and I stood my ground
+eric drake I salute your grandfather, hes mates and the rest of The Alliance for sacrificing their lives for our freedom! My grandfather was too youg to join the army in norway when the war broke out in december 9th, 1940. Many great soldiers in norway fought for the king so he could escape the country to Great Brittan via Sweden. The norwegian armey was very bad equipped. After two months norway capitulated to the SS.
Very fitting song as it was written for a Scottish WW1 Solider who was slaughtered in a Trench Raid. It's called Sgt MacKenzie Many Men Have Gunz. I did not realize how Bloody WW1 was until I visited a Golf Club in Northern Ireland about 15 years ago. They had a wall with all the members of the Club who were KIA in WW1 there were over 300 Names on that wall and the club probably only had about 500 Members. I also visited Moray in Scotland where Sgt MacKenzie was from, very small quaint Town. In WW1 the English Troops fought in Companies & Regiments that were organized from a specific Geographical Area, so they went to War with the people they grew up with and lived with. It was not unusual for a Town or Village to lose an entire Generation in one battle. Here are the original Doric Lyrics used for the scene. Lay me doon in the caul caul groon Whaur afore monie mair huv gaun Lay me doon in the caul caul groon Whaur afore monie mair huv gaun When they come a wull staun ma groon Staun ma groon al nae be afraid Thoughts awe hame tak awa ma fear Sweat an bluid hide ma veil awe tears Ains a year say a prayer faur me Close yir een an remember me Nair mair shall a see the sun For a fell tae a Germans gun Lay me doon in the caul caul groon Whaur afore monie mair huv gaun Lay me doon in the caul caul groon Whaur afore monie mair huv gaun Whaur afore monie mair huv gaun English Translation : Lay me down in the cold cold ground Where before many more have gone Lay me down in the cold cold ground Where before many more have gone When they come I will stand my ground Stand my ground I’ll not be afraid Thoughts of home take away my fear Sweat and blood hide my veil of tears Once a year say a prayer for me Close your eyes and remember me Never more shall I see the sun For I fell to a Germans gun Lay me down in the cold cold ground Where before many more have gone Lay me down in the cold cold ground Where before many more have gone Where before many more have gone In memory of Sgt. Charles Stuart MacKenzie Seaforth Highlanders Very fitting to Hal Moore and His Troopers Situation in the final battle.
Got married to my soon to be ex wife at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Leod. Magic venue not the best marriage. (heavy outlander links like she I think is the only one not family to plant a tree)
I love this movie called"we were soldiers"..I'm a Nigerian, but listening to this I remember the soldiers who went to fight against terrorist..may the souls of every soldiers who fought battles all over the world rest in peace...🙏🏼🙏🏼
@@louislaude9389 I believe he is referring to Boko Haram and similar groups. He says that this vietnam movie reminds him of later conflicts in Africa and the Middle East
Charles Stuart MacKenzie, a sergeant in the Seaforth Highlanders, who along with hundreds of his brothers-in-arms from the Elgin-Rothes area in Moray, Scotland went to fight in World War I. Sergeant MacKenzie was bayoneted to death at the age of 35, while defending one of his badly injured fellow soldiers in the hand-to-hand fighting of the trenches.
my great great grandfather was an ambulance driver back in the first world war and died pneumonia nearly a year after the war ended. Rest In Peace great great Grandad.
I have watched "we were soldiers" multiple times . It is a great movie, and a superb effort on the part of Mel Gibson. I am a Viet Nam Veteran, and a Gulf War Veteran. I am so very proud of my 22 years of Service , and My Country. I am proud to say that I have cried every Time that I did. Duty, Honor, Country is Why! I lost teachers of my High School years, and Close Friend to Both Wars. I cry to Honor Them, and the Thousands Who died in Both Wars !
I listen. As an Englishman that has never experienced war, I listen. All I can do is listen. Until I witness that of these soldiers or of 1993 Somalia, can I only comment.
+gbujarhead so go to a coutry and provoke one of the most bloodest conflicts of human history is was the right thing to do ? Some times i understand comunists
to all the soldiers that fight for this country I am so proud of each and everyone of you and my thoughts are to wish you a safe return to your families and friends and i hope many more appreciate what you do
My great grandfather was a Scots man who joined the Royal Irish rifles in 1907 and got medical discharge in 1915 wounded,, his son my grandad joined the Royal navy at 17,, 1936,, to 48,, to all those who never got back home,, from Northern Ireland,, ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️
As an American from Scottish parents and grandparents, I am greatful for the help, from the Irish ! I love the idea of a, United Ireland and Scotland !
When well into my 50s I first watched this sitting on a couch in Alabama with a young lady from Atlanta, GA. I cried like a baby and we shared a bed that night.
This song is a great example of how meaningful and haunting a piece can be, without the frills and production tweaks that so many of today's works embody. I heard this first on We Were Soldiers, and upon investigating was thrilled to find such an interesting back story, which would make a terrific story on its own account. Good stuff!
They would all think different if they did experience it.. Nothing to do being a Rambo or John Wayne.. Fear is the only word I can think of about going into battle,, I`ve had my share of them, never again..
I don't know about that. I volunteered for a second tour in Vietnam. There is nothing like it. I would say that most do not like it, but you'll never get a rush like that anywhere, ever.
I'll never forget the final scene... when Mel Gibson cried "I will never forgive myself for living when so many of my men died."... I'm sure so many decent commanders and officers felt the same way, even the night of their greatest victories. Such a a great soundtrack for a breath taking movie by a brilliant Actor / Director. Thanx for posting! Cheers!!!
rest in peace pap.... thanks for your service. ww2(Pacific army infantry) Korea(infantry) Vietnam(air force) I won't ever forget you and hope to be a great Marine as you are a soldier.... rest in peace pap see you later. 1923-2016......
***** thank you sir! But not even I would call you a ex soldier. You are still serving your country every day and your service to your country is always needed even in Germany today. Once a soldier always a soldier. Thank you for your service to Germany and the NATO forces and the western world.
Thank you for volunteering. I was 19 when I joined of all things, the US Coast Guard. I went to the Navy recruiter because if I had to go to Vietnam I wanted to go doing what I knew best. He said, "Down the hall, the Coast Guard. They are the ones running the patrol boats." So, I went down the hall and signed up. Halfway through basic we were told, "Everyone with a billet to Vietnam see the Yeoman for reassignment." That was October 1974. So, I went to Alaska and saved a few crazy fishermens lives. I do respect those who went and came home. My son included. The 101st. You didn't have to go but you did. Twice. Love you. DAD.
I am from ex Yugoslavia too. I also saw war, my hometown and my country were under bombs. NATO bombs. I was a refugee, my bus was checked-out on every military and police check-point, i was angry too. But maybe you have seen much worse things, maybe you lost somebody, maybe your home i don t know. If i insulted you i deeply apologize to you. Then we both know that war is not a video game, in a real war you can die only once. You ask me for the point of this movie. WAR IS WRONG,WAR IS HELL.
saw this movie for the first time when in was in basic training in the Belgian army and up and till now every deployment i did i would play this song the night before in shipped out like a good Luck charm

They grow not old as we who are left grow old,age does not weary them nor the years condemn,at the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.In tribute and with the deepest respect for all those who have merely gone before.
+MaceGaming53 also i have to go out & try to find a man with a lost right leg so i can buy good right foot shoes & he can have some of my left shoes. :) should put a advert in the papers or on facebook ?
Who is here 2021? This movie I can watch a thousand times. This song reminds me of how we are all mortal and our end is the cold ground. I salute those who put their lives in line to protect their country's or others ! Its a great sacrifice. Its the only purest love that still exists in this world!
Brought memories of my older brother killed in WW2 during the Philippines campaign. He was in the Army Air Force on a bombing mission. He will never break forgotten as long as his brothers live. God bless you Ewing.
Wonderful wonderful song, Joe will be sadly missed by many many folk. it's good to see so many people on here love his music which still lives on with his band Clan an Drumma. RIP Joe Kilna McKenzie
For all the wars and for all the soldiers who fought in them. My father Monte Cassino in World War 2. My brother who fought in many "conflicts" and died young.
There's only one colour in the military, and that's the colour of the uniform you wear. There's only one creed and that goes "I am willing to lay down my life to save the lives of my mates, as they are willing to do the same for me."
IT IS A LONG TIME A GONE AND EVEN TO-DAY WE SHOULD SAY WELL DONE TO THEM ALL GOD BLESS THEM ONE AND ALL! to you SGT MacKenzie you got it right the words are fine ye bonnie man. TO ALL WHO SERVE THE MESSAGE IS STAY SAFE NOW AND ALWAYS BLESS YOU ALL Patrick Lionel Whalen . SEPTEMBER 19th 2015 manchester
It's not what you were ordered to do but, what you did without orders to do it...it's still hunting me....even now, more than 30 years later....Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta, Colombia, South America...

Old men send young men to their deaths fact of life the rich get richer the average Jo blo don't. Shit thank you dick Hamer for sending 1000s of Aussies to there death and Ur polling protected there own kids bloody scumbags
"I will be the first to step foot on the field of battle, and the last to step off" And, "..You aren't going to get any pictures down there son" Classic lines from a classic film
Of course, bad people exist everywhere, and an army is no exception. But i like to think that those were just a minory. Most of the soldiers were and are people like you and me, either North American, British, Spanish, or whatever. And i imagine that war can twist a man's mind to the point of becoming monsters... war is shit. Sadly unavoidable, sometimes (not this case).
@VSonicBird So true!!!!!!!! Powerful and Rich men talk, and the young, brave men die! Just a shame for those brave men didn't make it home to bask in the glory of their bravery! There's no glory in death! Especially for a pointless war :-(
THIS MUSIC IS GRAND. I DID NOT GO TO VIET NAM, MY DAD DID, 3 TIMES. CAME BACK WOUNDED. I FOUGHT AT ANOTHER TIME AS AIR CAV. DEATH IS NO HOLIDAY. THIS COMBAT AS ANY OTHER, WAS IN THE MOST EXTREME UGLY. OUR SOLDIERS IN ANY WAR DID THEIR JOBS. PLEASE GIVE RESPECT. TO ALL VETERANS. FUNNY THEY, VIET NAM, WANT US BACK. MAYBE THERE IS HOPE FOR THE FUTURE.
Viet Nam. The very word used to make me cringe for years. So much blood and treasure spent in a futile attempt to hold back nationalism. It was never about the spread of Communism.....we mislead ourselves, and listened to the French. Now we vacation there and import Vietnamese shrimp and foodstuffs. All in the past now.
+sillyone52062 I don't think we should blame ourselves in misleading ourselves. We put tremendous faith in our presidents and all the warmonger, military advisors. They mislead us to our purpose in nam, to our citizens and more importantly mislead our precious young, valiant fighting force and misled many to there unfortunate demise. There is so much we have learned after the fact, but at least we learned something.
+Jake Warren we must understand that ho chin minh was not communist, he was NATIONALIST!!!! he was opportunist and cleaver, french politicians made a lot of mistakes about him only General LECLERC was cleaver but he die in 1947 ....... so many blood for nothing........
Your words remind me a 86 yo man who came to visit us when I was a kid. This man was the best friend of my great-grandfather and the last who talked with him before he ran to the top of the hill 414...all those years later he was still thinking of what he could have done to help his best friend to survive, one of the most touching moment of my life. They were not motivated at all to participate to this stupid war escalation of 14-18, them only motivation was to survive to the misleading of them time.14-18 was an official victory, but is the death of 8 millions for coward leaders a victory? I think it's not those young men who joined the army "to not be the ones who hide" to be ashamed but to the civilians, politicians or voters who ignored them own duty to take wise décisions and who turned them jacket along with the situation.
nintendokings I bet you realise that this is Scottish. "I'll stun ma grun. When they come, When they come, Stun ma grun. i'll nae be afraid" This is Scottish and it's great cause it fits perfectly.
@jawor1410 I read enough to see that all nations involved in second world war were no angels. No question, Poland got its freedom and land in 1919, but it was obviously not enough for them. So what is the difference between german and poland territorial expansion in that last war? Again, poland took land that was Germany for 500 hundred years. What gave poland the right to do that, isn`t it also terroism? I don't understand your logic.
This is always why i thank a veteran or solider for their sacrifice they may not make it back to their loved ones alive, from the bottom of my heart thank you to those who have fought and died in the line of duty to keep America and its values free
@Alonewolf74 With your agression you will change nothing here in that discussion. I am German not Nazi. by the way. The war crimes of Germany are also not questionable. But Poland and you is obviously hiding behind these crimes not to mention their own crimes towards Germany at end of the war. German land since 500 hundred years or longer was occupied by poland with millions of dead unarmed German civiliants. What is the difference between a german and a poland crime? And Is that honorful?
@ElkwoodVNorthern Good boy, you can count German war crimes as much as you want. I do not deny them. But it will also change nothing about the crimes that your nation did to German civiliants between 1945 and 49. And i will not stop speaking these reality out. So what do you wanna do now, call me nationalsocialist because of saying historical facts?
