If EVERYONE hit the thanks and donated A FEW BUCKS we could quit our day jobs and restore lighthouses full time! 😃 Hello friends! We are working on huge and expensive projects for these 3 lighthouses including a dock that will cost about $200k but will be AMAZING when complete and we will show it all here! Please consider sending supporting our mission by hitting the THANKS button on RU-vid or donating at our website thelighthousecenters.org Let’s “Restore the Lighthouse, Restore the Bay!” 😊

One of the best things about being miles out on the water at night is the lack of light pollution. This is probably the reason why the light doesn't need to be blinding to be seen from miles away.
@thelighthousecenters
@thelighthousecenters Месяц назад
Yes! It is beautiful at night. Also (I realized later) that the reason it doesn’t look bright is that it focuses the light on a flat plane and I am taller than the light so when I go up there it is firing at my chest, not my eyes. Every video we make has a few misunderstandings like this. But we are learning together! 😀

Just a couple of tips haviing worked over the water in the Navy. Tie a string to the tools you use over the water and attached the other end to something secure or even a belt loop, just in case your wrench slips out of your hand. Second, the line you put through the pulley tie a simple knot after the area of the longest area of line your using. This way you don't loose your line to the water since the weight will act as an anchor. At night, a match light will travel for miles depending on the altitude over the water, we were taught in the Navy as well.

I imagine there isn't too many interviews on the modern job of caring for these (its a bit boring as its just checking wires) but it is nice seeing how they do this job. ANT (Aids To Navigation) units are an often overlooked but essential unit in the Coast Guard. Most of these units have an average of maybe 20 people but they do quite a lot despite the small unit size. MK1 (the guy in the white hard hat) did an awesome job explaining what they do. An old seaplane mechanic told me that he dropped a wrench, in a Pacific lagoon, and he could see it on the bottom. Over 100 feet out of his reach. After that, he learned to use a cord on every one of his tools, because you can't just run and in the middle of the Pacific to get a new tool. Those holes in tool handles are not just for hanging them on pegboard.

You were talking about using tools while you're working over the side of the rail and trying not to drop something into the drink. In another lifetime (11 years in the Navy) I spent a lot of time on three different ships. Much of that time was above the 100' level working on equipment. I really didn't look forward to dropping a wrench or something and having to go down after it. I had a small line tied to the tools and to my safety harness. Sometimes the hookup was inconvenient but it served its purpose adequately. It really annoys your shipmates when a metal tool makes that peculiar "clinking" sound when it hits the deck. The bigger the tool is, the more impressive the "clinking" sound!! 😂🤣

I always love watching the coast guard and what they do. My dad was retired from the USCG.. I hate when you hear people downgrade their importance.. My Father was assigned to the USCGC Bering Strait (WHEC-382) in the mid 60s. He then was assigned to the USCGC Gresham (WHEC-387) He passed two years ago and would give anything to hear is crazy stories again and also all the questions that still come to mind that I could ask him about. I am proud of my father and his commitment to his country and his family.

Cool lighthouse! I am a commercial clammer in NJ. We use a 12 volt electric pot hauler to pick up our clam rakes full of clams. I have an electra-dyne pot hauler that uses a Boston Gear box attached to a 12 volt motor. Hamilton Marine also sells them. I have a 30 to 1 gear box on mine and it will pick up 25 to 40 pound anchors with no problem, would work well to lift stuff off of the boat..

When I was in the Navy and we would have to climb the mast, our tools had to be tied off so we wouldn't drop them on somebody else we'll have them bouncing off into the ocean. That's generally why most tools have a hole in the handle so it can be tied off so you don't lose it. The best way I've found to make a lanyard for your tools, is to buy a bunch of small snap hooks, like you would use for your dog, but not the same size. The cord just needs to be strong enough to catch the tool, and that would include the screw gun. I always used the fisherman's knot and tied an eye at the end of the rope so you could interchange between tools. You should have a stop knot so the rope doesn't fly off through the pulley and into the ocean, 4 or 5 ft from the end of the rope, in a big enough knot so it can't go through the pulley. And if you know how to splice put a rat tail on the end of the rope

The idea of a davit is that it can rotate so you dont have to lean out. It may need greasing, but once the cargo is lifted above the railings you should be able to rotate it over the floor and lower. It helps to bolt or wield a short bar to help turn it. If you have a few things to lift a simple thing like that can really save an aching back.

Adjustable wrench, you have a whole to use....make a loop for the other end , slide over your wrist. As to the wrench, I'd do one of three things -- weld a ring on it and tie a lanyard to it, drill a hole and tie a lanyard to it, or tape a lanyard on it if you can't drill it. Yeah, it adds a little complication to its use, but you won't lose it if you drop it.... personally, I'd drill it. Easier to store afterwards, untying the lanyard would be easy enough...

@thelighthousecenters in theatre when working on rigging, lighting, or other elevated areas we tie our tools to a leash. The leash is then connected to your belt or belt loop by a carabiner. Might be a good not to loose your wrenches in the bay.

You might look into a capstan for that jib. Depending on how it is set up, it will hold the rope if you let go, and it can make lifting things pretty easy. I bet there is a yacht surplus store somewhere around, you can pick up a used capstan for cheap, depending on size

Great video, I'm enjoying watching your progress and wish you all the best, these old lighthouses deserve to be preserved. Looking at the weight you had at the end, I think it looks more like the weight from an old lead and line, used to measure water depth in the age of sail, if it has a domed bottom, that would be to take a tallow pellet which would indicate the type of sea bottom, that's a cool find if it is!

I actually live on the Susquehanna River in Northeastern Pennsylvania! Thanks for noting it's the largest tributary to the Chesapeake Bay at nineteen million gallons per minute! The Susquehanna also supplies 90 % of the fresh water that flows into the upper bay.

I love that area. My family has property near Towanda and some along the river in Tunkhannock. It’s amazing that as large as the Susquehanna river is there, it flows hundreds of miles through PA growing along the way! It is also one of the oldest rivers in the world.

@thelighthousecenters My family and I were in the flood from Hurricane Agnes when the Susquehanna breached the levy system in Forty-Fort, a small suburb of Wilkes-Barre Our house was underwater for 27 days. The Susquehanna is a powerful, sometimes troubled, body of water, not to be reckoned with.

You guys should checkout Wachapreague Va. a lot of history there. My dad was born there on the kitchen table in 1922!

Got the heebee jeebies watching you put the pulley on the boom. No life jacket, a fall could hit your head and be unconscious in the water. Obviously that didn’t happen, but I would think any climbing like that should have safety gear.

You’re gonna need a placard on the crane for max load! Maybe even an inspection tag. Safety first.

If you trade out that single block for a more compound block and tackle, you'll gain mechanical advantage. As it is, you'll need to pull with a force equal to the weight of the object you're lifting.

These lighthouses are 125 to 150 years old so there definitely is some stuff down there. We will do some magnet fishing and show you what we find! We also have an underwater robot and will post some video of that too!

Hello! Big fan of the series! One thing I want to suggest is putting the name in the title for each video of what lighthouse the video will be about. My wife and I love watching ‘This Old Crack House’ and I’m personally a fan of the way he has his videos formatted. Ex. Hooper Island: We got visited by the US coast guard
