Willlll1m It’s probably because this only came 10th in the contest - which I perceive as a bloody injustice, especially behind the mediocre efforts of Hungary, Malta, France and Portugal. This was my 6th place that year.
This song is a masterpiece !!! Everything in this song is beautiful! Deep and meaningful lyrics (not cheap and easy lyrics as we can listen these days), great vocals, catchy rhythm, powerful backing vocals.... and a very great performance!!! I can still remember watching this amazing performance in the living room at my parents’ .... I was only 16 years old back then but I was impressed by this beautiful song and even today I still can’t understand why this song didn’t win! What’s worse, it didn’t even make it to the top 5 ! I didn’t understand English back then but I saw this song as the absolute winner from the very start but now that I can understand English and I can understand the lyrics of the song, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that this song is probably one of the most underrated songs in all the history of the Eurovision Song Contest! It could even be considered an insult not having given to this song the credit that it clearly deserved..This song was the winner by far! And over the years , I still think that this song should have won! And many years have passed by and this song still sounds amazing and the lyrics are precious. In my opinion it’s one of the best songs that UK has ever sent to the European Song Contest! Ok , she didn’t win the damned and very unfair contest but I don’t remember who the winner was that year ..... I only remember her and the song and what’s more important..... I still play it and I still love it after many many years! BEAUTIFUL SONG! Well done, United Kingdom! Greetings from Spain!
For me, it is UK's very best entry, Frances was just amazing and even with being forced to tone down her outstanding vocal range, on this live performance at the euro contest, even if very impressive, pales when compared to her previous performance at the UK home contest, at that one they allowed her to give her all with her amazing voice. Melody, lyrics, voice and back voices, it was just an amazing song, very inspiring, should have won.
eurovision song contest was always a cheat, they dont even care about how good a song is, its all politics, this song was by very far the best and it should have won, its my humble opinion, from Portugal
setheurovision94 It was that which reminded me of this.Kooky style should work but weirdly didn't. Clearly people were and are fed up with globalisation.Israel's winning song was about men and telling them off basically. Politics I'm surprised was allowed for this.
This is one of the most haunting, spine-tingling songs of all time. The best song Britain ever entered into the Eurovison Song Contest. Incredible it only finished 10th. What an amazing song.
The coolest entry ever from the UK! The rhythm is sick and this entry deserved to be at least TOP 3! Frances is AMAZING and the string arrangement in this song is CRAZY! :-D
THE BEST UK entry ever bloody injustice that it did not do better than 10th. 24 years later and I can still recall this song unlike so many of the others since. Frances Ruffelle is ace
I totally agree with you!!! After 24 years, I can still remember watching this amazing performance and song! The song and especially the lyrics of it are a treasure!!!! This song should have gone the contest by farrrrrrrrrr!!!!
As a Eurovision fan I have to say this is my favourite UK entry ever. Still shocked it never won. This song is 25 years old and yet still sounds great. How many Eurovision winners can you say that about?
mine aswell, and i am not even british, i still remember when i was watching this that night on my living room here in Portugal, at the end i told my sister "well, contest is over, UK just won, very inspiring song, just amazing, bravo Francis" today 2020 and it is still fresh, great singer and the backing singers aswell, how it didnt win?
Great song but her vocals on the night were poor and that is what the juries vote on (at the time, it was still juries only). Frances felt hemmed by the criticism she received for her movements during the UK song selection show (hip movements that were regular dance at the time but not so much seen on TV and that would be water off a duck's back these days) so she concentrated more on not doing that than she did on her vocals and it cost her.

@@CandleLight1974 I'm sorry to totally disagree with you. I have listened to this performance live many times and I cannot perceive what you consider ...”very poor vocals” On the contrary!!!! And if that was the case, it doesn’t really matter because her performance and her song are so spectacular that don’t deserve less than a top 1 !

Fully agreed. This is my favorite song from 1994 and one of the best songs the UK has ever sent. I couldn't believe the voting that year, the juries were out of it for ranking this only 10th.
The UK were so ahead of time in the 90's - what happened after 2000?? Francine Ruffelle is so brilliant and beautiful - especially as Dorien's daughter in Birds of a Feather.
I think the results of the 1990s (bar the 1997 win) contributed a great deal to the extent the BBC and artists lost interest in the 2000s. All that effort, a string of truly stunning entires, and nothing to show for it.
The removal of the language rule def killed us and Ireland alot, bbc didn't care anymore and sent any chap from the pub (shown from nearly all the new entries from 2000+), they gave up on Eurovision
Wow, what a song! Would be voting for it even in 2024. Loved our German entry that year, but this is amazing. And the background singers. I am in love.
Every year Eurovision comes around I forget to look this up until this year. I loved this song back then and never realised how fresh it still sounds today. I always thought we should’ve done better than 10th place.
I'm Irish & Remember watching this Eurovision back in '94 which was a vintage year for us with Riverdance, our third win in a row etc. but the UK should have won that year, totally didn't deserve 10th place!
Not 10th place but not a winner now Hungary song was way better and if it won I would have not have been put out or if Poland but not this UK entry but 10th place was wrong she was a bit off-key Backing singers were good.COYBIG
Gerry Ryan was co-presenting that year. I reckon the line he did just before the show was probably longer than the line formed by Michael Flatley and the other dancers during the interval act 😂
Just revisited this song after 30 years. I was 15 years when it was chosen to be UK's Eurovision entry. I can still remember all the lyrics, I was absolutely certain it would win. Why it only came 10th is till beyond me.
You only have to hear the THUNDEROUS ROARS OF APPLAUSE in the audience to see that this should have easily No 1 by a huge margin of votes. Must be a load of deaf viewers in mainland Europe! Jeez!
This entry was hands down to win in my opinion. She is so talented and beautiful and the performance was electric. Best UK entry ever and we/she were cheated. Never watched another E.S.C. since. Hard to believe this was twenty two years ago...ridiculous!
Watch the voting from that year - Terry was so confident that we'd get 12 points; soon after Ireland give the UK one point (oddly) Terry is just hoping that we'd avoid relegation... The jury voting was probably worse than the voting from the previous year...
Germany 🇩🇪 United Kingdom 🇬🇧 Poland 🇵🇱 Finland 🇫🇮 Russia 🇷🇺 Hungary 🇭🇺 Estonia 🇪🇪 Sweden 🇸🇪 Portugal 🇵🇹 All of them had great songs !!!! Love 💗 from Lebanon 🇱🇧
I totally loved this song back then in 1994 & I still do being a 16 year ago boy at that time & I involved in my first serious relationship this song was a thousand times better than Ireland's entry what won it that year
This was an awesome song, I bought this on cassette as young kid on my way home from school. (still have the cassette) I think one of the biggest problems with the performance was that audio quality seemed off so it did not seem as great as some of her performances of the song before the contest, maybe down to the acoustics of the stage. If you check out her album on Spotify where the audio is crisp and listen to this song you should notice the difference, also you'd never think it was from 1994.
Great era for the UK bit experimental at times... but you could tell a win was on the horizon. Just a question of when. Very similar to how Netherlands built up to their win in 2019.
Europe quite literally didn’t deserve the UK’s 1990s entries. No wonder they have almost given up these days. Same applies to Italy in the last decade.
This was a great performance. She should have done better than 10th. My only criticism is the backing singers were pretty flat. I know they they can't copy the backing vocals in the studio version but they could have done better. Other than that, this is one the the best entries the UK sent.
let's be honest..it's very easy on the ear and easy to listen to. But VERY repetitive... This would have been a decent top five...but never a winner. Rock n Roll Kids was very distinctive..
