Reasonable force is the amount of force necessary to protect oneself or one's property from a violent attack, theft, or other type of unlawful aggression. It is a term associated with defending one's person or property and may be used as a defence in a criminal trial or to defend oneself in a suit alleging tortious conduct1. Unlawful aggression, of any kind, may be met with reasonable force, but said force must be proportional to the threat being faced by the person using it.
