I'm not exactly a fashion history expert, but yes, women did in fact have pockets, it was necessary, especially for working class. The pockets just weren't built in to one of the first layers of the dress.
@AnaGellaOpong
@AnaGellaOpong 5 лет назад
Yes they did. It was, i think, in the 1900s when a slimmer silhouette was preferred that the pockets got "eliminated" from the dresses.

Yes. They were basically purses tied to the woman’s waist, and since there were so many ruffles in the skirts and petticoats; the woman would just stick her hand in between the splits and she would have a pocket! If you want more info, look up “getting dressed in the 18th century”

Ive watched a few videos on dressing in period womens clothes. They DID have pockets; they just werent attached to the skirt. They were in fact little bags tied on a cord around the waist and you had slits in the sides of the outer skirt to get to the pockets.

@bethanbaker7066
@bethanbaker7066 2 года назад
Also in older garments they were actually sometimes completely separate pieces that were tied around the waist. My 18th century dress doesn't have them but I don't have the pocket pieces because my petticoat ties at the back with no slits at the side so I wouldn't be able to use them anyway. I do know however that other 18th century petticoat would be tied from the back around the front and then the front around the back leaving slits for the pockets.

Actually, there's a 1700 "hoop skirt lite" called "pocket paniers" (panier=oldschool French for basket) that you tied around your waist for those buffet table hips from the Marie Antoinette days. And yes, people hid snacks in them! (Along with hankies or an extra fan.) The big ones for deluxe buffet table hips ("grand panier" meaning "huge basket") were shaped like squashed farthingales and had secrets slits for the pockets you could tie on under them to hide the goods :) The secret pocket technique stuck around with some hoop skirt models, actually :3

Low key losing my mind rn. Keep in mind that you are wearing petticoats. These are primarily undergarments which would be less beautiful. Petticoats mainly provide the silhouette. Women in skirts wore underwear that covered the legs and would have an opening in the crotch women could still readily relieve themselves. ON POCKETS Like a hidden fanny pack a woman would tie a 'pocket' around their waist. All period skirts that slit on the side to access that pocket. A good way of thinking about this is: Lucy Locket who lost her pocket. The strings around her waist came undone and the pocket fell out of the skirts.

First off, I want to say that a simpler way to try and sit in a hoop skirt is to lift it by the hoop. In other words, by a section of wire that makes up the hoop skirt, and then sitting down. It helps immensely. As for the pockets, they can be tied underneath a skirt with slits on the sides for hands to go through. I'm surprised that Miss Saito didn't say anything about this.
@sleepingrose3116

Hoopskirts don't have pockets because they are underwear, to be fair though the overskirt wouldn't have pockets either. During the late 18th century to mid ish 19th century women would wear small bags called reticules over their petticoats with an opening in the overskirt so they could access it.

"while these types of skirts were in fashion" you know thats the span of 2 centurys right? there have been fashions in the middle of this that did in fact show the ankle, especially when the robe a la polonaise was in fashion, and it paved the way for exciting new footwear that could now be seen

8:56 actually at that point the pockets should still have been tied on underneath the skirt and accessed through slits in the side. Pockets were never really sewn into womens clothing, they were always separate pouches on their own little belt (because women had the space in their clothing to allow for that whereas men's clothing (especially their pants) went through quite a few tight phases)
@KitsuneBelle93

Cool this was a neat one, I love lady like, but a few things: 1) Going to the bathroom (at least for #1) in a hoop skirt involved putting ones foot up, doing their business in a large cup/pot thing with a handle, then dumping it into the toilet. Another way would've been to straddle the toilet! 2) worry not they DID have pockets! They were these weird little apron type things that they tied around their waists between the petticoats and over skirts, one on each hip, and they were fairly large! 3) Actually, yes Devin that IS what women would have done! Though, perhaps not so high as to expose ones underpinnings. 4) it wasn't just a hole in the ground (generally), there was a box built OVER the hole in the ground! haha, only slightly better. Please forgive my nerd, historical dress is a pet research project of mine.

Sit down toilets have been around since ancient Roman times - they had both sit down and urinal style toileting. Medieval times - ever heard of the garderobe in a castle? - an indoor style outhouse, or a privy somewhere less posh. Not to mention, for women - often they wore no underwear like we do, just a chemise so less fussing, even the pantaloon and tap pant style underwear usually had no sewn up gusset/crotch so again less hassle under mountains of skirt fabric.

You NEED to check our Priorattire here on RU-vid. Those skirts definitely had pocketing available in the overskirts. Plus the wide hips on the skirts you kept showing as hoop skirts (they aren't) were hip bags, with plenty of storage. As for sitting, just like in a long dress now, you need to sweep forward and gently lift. Using the bathroom in them was suprisingly easy too, with the right undergarments (which you didn't have). Seriously, check out Priorattire, please

When you wear a hoopskirt in a small car it's helpful to tuck some of the fabric behind you around the edges of the seat. It can really get in the way of the steering wheel if you put too much of it in your lap.

you guys complained about not having pockets which surprised me. Most petticoats would have slits in the side and so you would hang little bags around your waist underneath the hoopskirts. I don't know why you didn't have any. That is very strange and unpractical and no woman wouldn't have pockets.

Mary Rose Kent A quinceanera is a young latin american woman who's turned 15. Think of it like the equivalent of a young Jewish man's bar mitzvah. It's a coming of age ceremony as well as a celebration of femininity. The Quinceneara wears a hoop skirt, long flowy, poofy dress and there's dancing, eating, etc. I believe there's also gifts involved but I'm not entirely sure.

Laura Ingalls Wilder talks about wearing hoop skirts in one of the later Little House books. She certainly did chores, but I don't think she wore the hoops while doing them. She did all of her chores in a corset though. They should have done that.

I love the members of lady like, but I wish someone would have shown them how to function in a hoop skirt. There is a certain way to sit, go to the bathroom, and get through tight spaces. And the functions for these are built into the design of the skirt! They would have had a much better time. Also these skirts would have had pockets. They would have had bigger and deeper pockets than men would have had during the same time period.
