It’s that time of year where our mares are DONE with their children, and we help them out by weaning!
We wean with the signs from the farmer’s almanac, and it truly helps with the transition!

Ok everyone saying she needs to consider a different method doesn’t know her or what she’s tried. I know plenty of horses who’ve been weaned cold turkey (I own a mare who I guarantee was weaned that way) and she’s just fine. I will agree some foals are better off than others and will react better than others. There are so many factors that should be considered, colts can breed back to their dams, mares can loose weight, mare may not be producing enough milk, the foal may be stealing all the dams hay, etc. I have a foal that my vet said to wean at 3 months if my mare wasn’t gain and retaining weight because of her health. Vets won’t geld colts until a minimum of 6 months old but if you have a 3-4 month old Colt mounting his mare constantly there could be the possibility of him breeding his mare (which is a disaster waiting to happen genetically). Criticizing someone based off of another RU-vidr (who as far as I know has never bred a mare or bought a mare and foal combo) isn’t fair. You don’t know what conversations she’s had with her vet about weaning so you can’t judge. When I asked my vet about weaning my Colt he never suggested a method just a time period. My suggestion is to stick to your own business, educate yourself, and talk with your vet if your trying to wean a foal. Judging someone based of a 1-30 minute video isn’t fair. Do your own research and let others be. Harassing and repeating information (without doing your own thorough research and being able to provide said person with the research) will not make someone change if they don’t want to.

the reason you have to wean is alot of mares can't gain back condition if they're also feeding a foal past 6ish months. They can also be at risk of being bred by their own foals should they come back into season before the foal is weaned which not only is a problem genetically but can also cut off their milk supply too.

You seem like a very sweet person who cares for the horses. There are so many studies out there that show how bad this is. It causes not only serious mental distress and damage but can also lead to injuries. Science backed proof this is horrible for foals. I worked for on a farm that was passed down through generations and the granddaughter had so many arguments with parents and grandparents because she believed certain things they were doing were cruel. I know this is how you were taught so please reconsider. That’s all. Much love and respect

Some of the “science backed proof” that Raleigh provided was a study only done on pigs and not equine. Which discredits what she was saying, a ton. Many, many owners give ulcerguard before any type of stressful situation. Its very common practice, it isn’t drugging the horse. These foals are perfectly fine, it took a day or two for them to chill out and be out in the pasture playing. It isn’t that deep just because Raleigh (who has no actual experience breeding or weaning foals) says it is.

Why don't you do a slow wean process in a pasture? I know Phin's mom can't go out so maybe the cold turkey way is the only way. Just seems so stressful on them and moms as well as you.

I think this is hilarious. Come on y’all. Chill. I have three kids and I let them cry themselves to sleep at the right age. This is the same thing but horses. The horses are fine. My kids… were fine. The youngest just turned 16. Ask me if they remember any of that crap? No. It may be traumatic for you watching but these horses aren’t going to remember anything.

Lmao you just taught your kids that they can’t rely on you, they probably have at least mild attachment issues

Great job! Cant stand all fhe people who think its thwir job to twll you how to do what you've been doing for generations. The irritation i feel.... Half of the people commenting their opinions didn't seem to even watch ghe video. Making comments that make it clear they weren't paying attention to this video at all.... Kts ridiculous. There is no oerfect method. If this works for yall then thats the end kf that! Keep doing what your doing. So many of us follow and watch. We see how much you live your animals! Do t let the hate gwt you down!

please try a less psychologically traumatic weaning method in the future... you have a large pasture the mums and foals could have been in for FIRST introduction rather than the foals stuffed in a small space - that stall. Bring in a nursing mare to the paddock and let them wean off their mums for WEEKS this is truly traumatic and many studies can back this is one of if not the worst methods for weaning. My family has been breeding Friesans and ASH for many years and from my experiences and the research I've done. I could never morally do the cold turkey method AS WELL as you know damn well how poorly the foals can take this. As well as the mamas. Truly I love your channel but I hope next year you do a more nurturing method for your foals. The matter that you know foals take it so poorly and you try to make it as easy as possible - try a different and kinder method on both parties for mums and the foals. Also- Phin is not being dramatic nor would he be. You just took his mother away of course he's going to be distressed. Psychologically humans have had a similar reaction to these things. for a very OVER the top but very relevant part of history is the Australian stolen generation. Psychologically they have similar reactions if you compare foal reactions to human children growing up with the psychological damage of just being ripped away from your mother. Truly no hate by this comment BUT I feel sick watching this and the way you spoke of the foals 'overreacting' this is hopefully the most traumatic thing that will ever happen to them in their lifetime. @katievanslykelife
