Weapons Made for God: 5 Unexplained Ancient Weapons from the Crusades

In 1189, during the tumultuous period of the Third Crusade, Conrad of Montferrat led his naval forces into the waters near the coastal city of Acre, aiming to reinforce the siege against the city. Upon his arrival, Conrad encountered a formidable defense: the Tower of Flies.
This tower, looming ominously over the harbor like a stone sentinel, was more than just an architectural marvel. It anchored a massive chain that stretched across the harbor, creating an insurmountable barrier for any naval force daring to breach it.
Conrad, determined to land his forces on the island where the tower stood, launched multiple attempts to bypass this daunting obstacle. However, his efforts were repeatedly thwarted by nature's wrath: fierce winds, treacherous waves, and unforgiving rocks, ultimately compelling him to concede defeat.
The origin of the tower and its macabre name remain shrouded in mystery and myth. The tower was already an ancient structure when the Crusaders arrived during the First Crusade, likely built by the Phoenicians between the 6th and 4th centuries BC.
Those first Crusaders believed it was the site of sacrifices offered to the god Beelzebub, known as the “lord of the flies,” which would attract clouds of literal flies. Another theory suggests a more mundane origin, speculating that the tower served as a dumping ground for refuse.
Regardless of its name's origin, the Tower of Flies instilled dread in the hearts of sailors and soldiers alike.
The harbor chain, known as a boom, represented a naval commander's worst nightmare. Ships attempting to attack Acre found themselves trapped by the chain, becoming easy targets for arrows, artillery, and other projectiles launched from the tower's high vantage point.
Ironically, the Tower of Flies, which now thwarted the Crusaders, was a creation of their own making. When European forces initially captured Acre during the First Crusade, they rebuilt the tower and installed the chain as a defensive measure.
A century later, after Saladin's forces retook the city, these very defenses turned against their original builders, contributing to the tower's ominous reputation...

A nicely made piece of work. Well done. Did you know that the original name of that nefarious Middle Eastern mob was Hashishin (I think I spelled it right), which translated roughly to "eaters of hashish". The story goes that they were fed large quantities of hashish, and along with some kind of mind control "therapy" (brain washing?) it would turn them into half crazed maniacs who were so hell bent on completing their mission that only death would stop them. It's from their name we get the word "assassin".

These hand grenades, were any found in Antioch, by chance? And would one have to count to 3 or 5 before throwing them?

First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shalt be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it. damn, damn you, you beat me too, it.

Around 1316, Pope John XXII had sent a group of Dominicans, who were heavily armed, down to Ethiopia to find a Patriarch who was a valid claimant to the Papal succession. This Patriarch was Prester John. I believe that the word was put out that he was a mythical figure, so that he could not be elected to the Papacy.

In India before the British occupation wootz steel blades were the prized highly ornanented properties of the Rajas or Maharajahs of India and their princes and generals. These unique blades had their individual patterns and were so famous that if a Raja or Maharaja saw one they immediately knew who it belonged to and often they could determine on the battle field who they were fighting. At that time India which was a huge region in South West Asia had hundreds of kingdoms of various sizes not unlike the British archipelago before the Roman occupation. These swords were considered to have an inestimable value and when the Rajas went into battle they were firmly bound to the warriors hand with cords of silk so that they could never be lost even in death. One story tells that when the family of a fallen Raja tried to get the sword out of his hands his grip was so firm on.the sword that they had to break his fingers to remove rhe sword. There is another tale about these swords which highlights their significance. It is legendary that the sword was absolutely considered as a matter of honour by the Royalty and Military hierarchy that if one of these swords was recovered on the battlefield when its owner was killed tthe sword would be returned by the Raja or Maharaja with a secure guard to the family of its original owner. It was considered a shame not to do so, even if the deceased owner was an arch enemy. On record there have been a few instances where an ill informed individual thought that they would be able to loot the sword from the battle field and sell it to the arch enemy of the fallen Raja. These spry individuals were immediately executed and the sword was returned to the fallen Rajas family. In India various tribes are famous for the ancient craft they are known for. A few years ago I heard that there is still one family left who still produce the wootz steel by an ancient secret recipe passed dawn through generations from father to son. The same situation is found with the production of attar, the perfume worn by both women and men on their clothes and in their hair. Some fragrances are so expensive that their price is more than pure gold. The wootz steel sword is an extraordinary artifact indeed.

@OnTheRiver66
@OnTheRiver66 6 месяцев назад
And there is no secret about how it was made. Over 40 years ago researchers found ancient Wootz steel manufacturing sites, the crucibles, ore, and ingredients used, including rice hulls, and examined and analyzed original wootz ingots. It was determined exactly how the steel was manufactured and it is being made today by Roselli Knife. I don’t know why they persist in the myth that Wootz steel is a mystery.
@MyKnifeJourney
@MyKnifeJourney 6 месяцев назад
About the only secret to wootz steel is how to attain the properties given whatever local resources were available. Knowing the ore, the right fuels, the kilns being used and what you have access to in the environment to augment or improve or balance the steel. Then the forging and shaping etc. This takes time in one location to master the craft. No youtube video guides in those days.

In Israel 🇮🇱 the towns of Sodom and Gomorrah you can go there and pick up balls of sulfur and light them very easily, possibly one of the ingredients that made up the Greek fire 🔥 of the crusader battles . The yellow balls of sulfur lye on the ground looking similar to fruit of some kind .
