The Athens War Museum doesn't have many bronze weapons or armour, but they do have a lot of stuff from all other periods. Strangely enough their best sword collections are down in the basement next to the toilets. There are even less bronze weapons in the Athens antiquities museum. So you might be safe in your assumption about the British collections.
Hey matt. Have been quitely following your channel for more then a few years now, I myself being HEMA enthusiast since 2002. Although I don't agree with every single statement you make, you do seem to have the rare and singular talent to leave me sitting here smiling and nodding with content. So after all these years its about time I subscribe. People like you deserve every bit of support they can get. Your thoughts and ideas concerning the ever growing world of HEMA are sophisticated and well thought out. And your bring them to us in a humble and often funny manner that really helps deliver the message. So you, good sir, can have my grattitude and admiration! Sincere greetings from the netherlands and please keep up the good work! Ps could you do a video covering modern day manufacterers an your opinion about the quality and pricing of their blades? Cheers!
The Doge's palace in Venice had an amazing armory display within. My dad smuggled some pictures even though he wasn't supposed to and I'm glad he did. I love looking at those pics. Tons late medieval/Renaissance pieces... Pikes, sabers, mounted armor and shields.
Totally agree with you,it really annoys me also being a reenactor.I have used lamellar leather armour boiled in beezwax,an excellent defence .Great videos Matt.
Thanks much for the video. Last time I was in Blighty, I didn't get to see much of London. Mostly went to see my devils play at Old Trafford. Definitely want to check out the Wallace Collection again. Cheers.
There is also a private collection on Jermyn street.Very posh and strict but they have Some medieval swords excavated from around 12 th century onwards as well as many other weapons from history. They have armour as well,The shop is not public as in you have to ring the bell to get in, but worth seeing if your around that part of London. I wonder how much they charge for that sword ;)
I wish I could afford to travel to the UK and Matt and I could just chill out. Smoke some of the that famous British weed, spar, go to the mall, just shit like that would be awesome.
***** Yeah homie, I read up on that shit. The weed in England is descended from the same strains that the knights of Lancaster used to smoke. It was cultivated by lords serving men who were rumored to try their hand in other arts as well, such as alchemy, and necromancy. Its said their weed is woven with spells and dreams.
Would it be possible for you to visit some of those museums with camera and make a video with commentary like you did in Florence? A lot of us will never have a chance to visit those places in person
Because Brits ( like us ) hundreds of years ago buggered off to some really cool countries, killed there people, took their women and all there cool artefacts! But I still f***** love living in London / UK. Wow....Patriotic or what?
I have been to Athens "WAR" museum, they have a good collection but not in a particiular age or era, they just have a sample of every type from egypt empire to WW II. it is still very interesting but not broadsword based or something.
Recommendations for US museums? What is your opinion of the Met's collection? (Metropolitan Museum of Art). How representative are those pieces, vs. those pieces being more about arms & armor that were also more ornate or artistically done? I hear there was a good collection at the Higgins Armory Museum in Massachusetts, which got shut down and transferred to the Worcester Art Museum, also in Mass. Others to check out?
Thanks for the video. The fiance and I will begin our world travels next summer, and London's definitely on the list. She's planning on travelling the world and fighting against human trafficking, I'm along as a body guard of sorts because people who traffick humans don't usually like the people who stop them :P I'll be sure to check out a few of the very interesting places you mentioned. Thanks again!
You think one bloke going along is going to stop a group of hardened criminals from taking you? Good luck getting kidnapped when you interfere with something way over your head. No offense but your plan is utterly stupid and dangerous.
IronRooRoo Hell no I don't think it's going to do much. But I'd rather be there than not. I'd rather slightly improve her chances, than do nothing at all. Way over our head? We'll be there with the likes of the U.N., Nato, and the red cross, as well as several other non-profits. .I'm not sure why you think that a "hardened criminal" will out-think or outperform years of training to take down said hardened criminals, but I'll be sure to let you know my my kidnapping goes, should I survive it, though.
Could you do a video about shields in the same way you did one about armour? Like, why would you have a bug viking shield or a hoplon instead of a buckler.
Maybe you should put the list of the places you mentioned in the video description? By the end of the video I forgot what you recomended in the begining of the video.
Quick question, I have several times in both movies and books, seen that one sometimes choose to turn the handle rather than the blade at the opponent, is there a particular reason for this? For a starting point I would think that the blade would be the best part to beat the opponent with.
i love your videos question about a sword type i have never seen before the Colichemarde i saw it on deadliest warrior so i gues my question is how was it used and was it effective as they made it out to be on the show
Horse guards... i have often wondered if the sabres they carry are real weapons, or just dress sabres. If they are real, i wonder if they are actually sharp. Do the horse guards actually train in military sabre?
Please, don't write things like "London, UK", it looks somewhat patronising, as if we weren't aware where London is, or that we'd assume you're talking, for example, about the London in Ontario; on the other hand, if someone doesn't know where London is, high chances are they wouldn't know what the UK is.
I was once talking to a paramedic in Arizona and he was surprised that I could speak fluent English, considering I came from London. I don't know where he thought London was....
Have you ever heard of London, Ontario (that is in Canada) ? There are other towns called "London". While i agree that London (UK) is by far more important, It becomes much less clear when you talk about Cambridge (MA or UK).
