After playing around with actually getting this 2nd hand Roco 35900 turntable up and running, I thought it might be a good idea to have a crack at some detailing, crewing & weathering.

My pleasure, it’s pretty basic stuff but I think it has the desired effect.

Cheers, that means a lot. One area though that I do want to improve on is the electronic side the hobby. There’s just so much cool stuff out there I want to cram it all in!

The power issues sounded like a bit of a nightmare. Good job pushing through. It looks great

The usual approach is to power the deck and use that to power the roundhouse tracks when lined up. If you have two roundhouse tracks opposite each other then you use the red/green function of the turntable switch to select which end of the deck feeds power through the end contacts. Powering the deck does mean you can run into polarity problems when the "wrong end" is lined up with the main depot entry track which usually has its own power feed. Can be solved by polarity switching the deck (for DCC a reversing module could be used), but I get round this by only ever driving onto the "shed end" of the deck from the entry track. Powering the deck from the surrounding trackwork (rather than powering the deck) will work quite well as you have found and is not a problem for DC, but for DCC it does mean the deck is dead whilst in motion which won't be good for keeping DCC sound decoders going. Nice weathering :)

Cheers, yes I’m weighing up what’s more important to me at the moment, all my Pacific’s “ticking over” in their sidings whilst the one on the turntable is quite is what I’m going with as you’re not likely to hear the turntables loco over the other 7! (I think)

More reviews by all means Peachy, but don’t change the laid back style in a quest to ‘professionalise’ it.

Cheers Greg, I'm happy to do laid back! 🙂

The Roco turntable seems to be the only choice when it comes to TT120, but is a bit on the short size. I notice that you have a Hornby A4 on it. Have you come across any length problems with any other locos?

No problems regarding vehicle length, the LNER Pacific’s all have the same wheelbase which has plenty of space either end, the LMS Princess Coronation class locos have bodies that are a few mm longer than the A4’s but I believe have the same wheelbase as the Pacifics and are by far the longest in the current range will also have no problem fitting. If you end up having part of the loco body overhanging I don’t believe it’s a problem, certainly not physically and neither is it a problem prototypically as I’ve seen photos of real locos overhanging. Another option is the old Triang TT turntables but you’ll only find them 2nd hand and they have limited ramps. Also I think they look over long.

Good job. Shame you had a faff with the electrics - at least you have it functioning OK.

Thanks Tony, also my faffing about trying to get a light permanently on in the hut rather than just when it moved ended up getting pulled by "the Editor"!

I presume you need a reverse loop DDC device to solve your power issues.

No. Unfortunately reversing loops don’t really work with DC which is basically what Bluetooth DCC is powered by. This works with reed switches and magnets
