Always look forward to watching these. How do you think a dust wash compares visually (not just color but also texture, to the extent that its there) with pigments? I have thought that pigments offer texture (i know the idea of visual texture seems a little odd, but to my eye, looking at pigments applied to a surface, it seems to give it a depth, or height (or both)). I haven't gotten a wash to look that way, don't know if i'm doing it wrong, or maybe pigment for the texture and wash on top of the pigment for additional/different color? I'll have to play with that next time i'm doing something that is close-ish to the ground.
In general, the washes will leave the visual effect of dust and dirt, but not the visceral effect. Pigments can leave a visceral effect, but unless something is done to fix them in place, they're incredibly fragile. I like to combine the two. You can see that demonstrated here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tvbIrFkZH2M.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6X4hPD08s-I.htmlsi=ZKm2Ggb8jpPeIv0a&t=1272 There are also products that have texture built in, that basically combine the two in a bottle, and those can be used for visceral effect. Vallejo makes these, and they combine all of it in one package. This is from the now defunct Wilder Weathering Products, but others (like Vallejo) make various weathering "pastes" that can be used to good effect. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pdIG2cH-ZkA.html The trick is using dry things with texture (pigments, dirt, etc.) and combining them with wet things (washes and other binders) to get them to stay in place. I hope that helps!
Great work! Agree 100% on why I don't bother with enamel products. Although I recently got some Humbrol and Tamiya enamels, could we call them "full bodied" enamels? I am hoping they last a while because they're not pre-thinned like ammo/AK type products
