Have you ever wanted to make a Weatherproof Weather and Air Quality System? That transmits its edge-collected data long-range through LoRa? And then have that data automatically uploaded to the Internet (thanks to The Things Network) to be gorgeously visualised on an easily accessible data dashboard (thanks to DataCake)? And have you wanted it to be battery-powered and automatically scheduled to turn on and off? And for all software aspects to be completely FREE? Then I present to you a great way to go about it.

The following is exactly what is going on inside the system (it may sound complex but this project will demonstrate exactly how to reach this endpoint step by step). The 3 X AAA batteries are plugged directly into the Makerverse Nano Power Timer HAT (Hardware Attached on Top). Upon completion of the Main Programming Script (meaning data has been transmitted) this Timer HAT will switch off all other hardware and go into a deep sleep. I have it set to turn on the Raspberry Pi Pico every hour on the dot. The timer HAT consumes a (really tiny!) 35nA whilst in deep sleep during this period.
Then once an hour has passed this Timer HAT will bring the project back to life. As soon as the Raspberry Pi Pico is provided power, through the Power Timer HAT, it will accurately measure Temperature, Humidity, and Air Pressure, provide an Air Quality Index number and measure the Volatile Organic Compounds and Carbon Dioxide amounts in its direct environment. It does this thanks to the BME280 and ENS160 Sensors on the chosen Piicodev Modules.
Then in a blink of an eye, it will transmit that data to a LoRa Gateway via the Makerverse LoRa-E5 Module (see it in the image above). This data gets intercepted by The Things Network, uploaded to the internet, and pushed into DataCake. DataCake creates an (easily and fully customisable) Visual Data Dashboard which can be freely viewed by any internet device! Hit up the Visual Data Dashboard Website that I've chosen to make publicly accessible here. Simply as soon as the edge collected data transmits it goes into The Things Network it shows up in this dashboard.
Better yet Datacake enables allows us to schedule periodic emails. This means each week I will receive a CSV (Excel) sheet of all the data collected over the week straight into my email. That means we won't lose any historical data ever. Also, DataCake will let you set up thresholds triggers and Out of Battery Alert emailed straight to you!

This is neat, I'd love to see something like this with windspeed, direction, rain and lighting gauges as well. I want to plant them around town. (small town) and aggregate the data from all of them.

Beauty. Well done sir. Check out the Heltec boards. Very easy, Arduino compatible and you can eliminate a bunch of those boards. They also have integrated solar charge controllers so you can slap a little solar module on your project and have it run forever.

Use D cells if you have the space, I have a digital clock still running on the same cell since 2005 !

Would like to use this on a rural property with an input from a Water Tank (Pressure Sensor) as well. Please confirm that I would need to also setup my own Gateway (maybe your uGateway) or could it also be configured in a peer to peer arrangement with the use of say Home Assistant for graphic displays etc. Any feedback welcome.

Excellent idea! Totally within the capabilities of a LoRa system just like this one 😊. The best place to get tips on projects is our forum, come hit it up here and we'll get our in-house experts onto it - forum.core-electronics.com.au/

Brilliant video. I'm from Brazil and was wondering if any other Lora modules are compatible with this guide? For us the easier way to buy components like that it trough Aliexpress, most of the time that prevent the packages to be stuck on a bureaucracy customs. I've looked over and found dozens of options for lora to PicoPi, so I'm kind a lost if any of these devices will get a similar result from the ones you used. Thanks for the great video, got a new subscriber 🙂

Sweeet! Welcome to Australia 😊 I'd love to visit Brazil. The LoRa Modules we have here can do all kinds of Radio Frequencies appropriate for wherever you are based in the world. They use the same module as the Seeed Lora-E5 Board - core-electronics.com.au/lora-e5-mini-stm32wle5jc-dev-board.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiAo-yfBhD_ARIsANr56g4QaFQM9FObP_nI4NVrfg8KrqIMOzHCMGIVO-wEHKpnl7P-46QHPqEaAu0nEALw_wcB - So long as you update the script to be appropriate for your location you'll be off to the races. Thanks for your kindest words! Glad to have you onboard.

Awesome video and great tutorials - any idea how have the PICO (Micropython) use a GSM 4G unit as it's main internet source? I am as far as setting the device up, configured UART and can sent AT commands via UART, make a data connection and get an IP address, then put the modem to sleep, but I am stumped on how to send the "sensor_readings" to say Datacake or InfluxDB using this connection instead of WIFI - I have Pimironi Pico Weather running the scripts (It looks like the FW uses GET/POST to upload to InfluxDB but there will be no wifi where I deploy and I will use LORAWAN on the second unit when I get there - any chance you could assist PLEASE!!!!

Can this design be used for Google home. Recently I found out that when I ask Google for the Temperature and Humidity it is actually replying with data from a suburb quite a distance away. I would love to ask google for the temperature and it replies with the temperature of the LoRa weather monitor in my back yard. Any chance of a video or instructions on how I could set this up.

Haha you are right. I now need to figure out how to fit one of these into the case - Particulate Matter Sensor core-electronics.com.au/catalog/product/view/sku/SEN-15103 - or find a better location for it.
