What about insulating from heat. Does a top bar beehive need to be insulated on hot days? We get a lot of days in summer above 40oC

Can wool be put in a top bar hive to insulate it? If not what would you recommend?

wool is a great insulator! You can definitely use it on top of your bars, or in the dead space in your hive and it'll probably work great.
