Birka was a robust trading center for 200 years between 750 and 960 AD. The Birka digs are some of the most famous of the Norse era because of the quantity and variety of items found and the distance which these pieces have traveled. Quite a number of tablet woven fragments were found in the excavations, including today’s project, known as Birka 12, grave find 735.
Pattern for this piece can be found on my blog: ladyelewys.carp...

Tablet Weaving Pattern Generator:
* jamesba.github...
Yarns:
* Maysville Carpet Warp, which can be found at several different weaving supply places (I often use WEBS at www.yarn.com). It comes in more than 70 colors on an 800 yard spool for about $9, so it can be used in a number of projects and the price is very reasonable.
* 20/2 silk from Eowyn de Weaver on Etsy. Each cone is $30 and comes in 18 different colors. There are also small 100 yard spools that run $5 each and comes in more than 2 dozen colors.
* Pearl cotton, size 8, which can be found is most craft stores in a bunch of colors.
Cards:
* 2 1/2" wide (63 mm) made on a 3D printer, a pattern designed by my husband. Free downloadable patterns of other tablets are available on Thingiverse (not my pattern--we are still working the kinks out of the design--www.thingivers...)
* 3 1/4" from Robin & Russ Handweavers (which are, unfortunately, out of business) or from Schacht Spindle Company, which run $8 for 25 cards. I love these because they are colored on the edges and they are thin but very durable. Similar cards by Lacis are available on Amazon.
Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

The best cardweaving videos out there! A little bit of history, a little bit of repeating the basics you explained in earlier videos, and building on that in a well-explained way. And then suddenly it all makes sense. Thank you so much for your time and effort Elewys. I hope you keep making these kinds of videos.

Thank you so much for these videos you make. For years I've been marvelling at the tablet weavers at the middle age fairs, wanting to learn how to weave like that, but it looked sooo intimidating. Your videos are so clear and easily understandable, I managed to weave a very smooth Oseberg at the first try. And now I'm hooked, or warped :) Just about to start the Birka above now. So again, Thank you so much for sharing this craft with us! Greetings from Luxemburg!

Well, 2nd video and I’m convinced this could only end like my timeless tries at crocheting 😂. I hand piece and quilt well quilts and other quilty things. You’d think I could do this since I hand pieced a double wedding ring with 8 piecing in each 4th of the circle (rainbow tie dye) as my very first quilt. But no the crochet was a nightmare, I think my brain just can’t get with loops and knots. I’d really love to do weaving and crochet. I’m thinking boards for quilts.

The alternative is to use fishing swivels and chase the twist to the end, which can work on some looms...didn't work so well on this one. Your mileage may vary.

Possibly a stupid question, but what difference would it make to the pattern if you use a different weft colour?

You show locking-in the weft thread at the start and cutting the warp threads when you're done, but what to do you do at the end to lock-in the weft so it doesn't unravel?
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 3 года назад
That loop I leave behind--I put the shuttle through that loop and pull it tight. I find they don't unravel very easily, but you can also put a drop of fray check on the end if you're concerned about unraveling.

I think the widest I did was 1 3/4" wide--a test piece for a pattern that turned out to need much finer thread to make it about 3/4" wide. I also did a commission years ago, but of course, that is long gone. The longest was the 7 yard silk Birka 22.

For the edge cards, you can go backwards or you can flip the cards and continue forwards (it has the same result). There will be a slight interruption in the pattern, but not really noticeable.

Are your cards labeled clockwise or counter-clockwise? Are they facing left or right? Did you thread S or Z in the appropriate holes? There are so many variables. Double check all those things against the pattern and you may find your answer.

What happens if you thread your cards #17 to #1 so that they read right to left instead of threading the cards #1 to #17 so that they read left to right? It doesn't change the pattern at all, does it?
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066

If the pattern is symmetrical, I don't think it will, but it might tip the threads the wrong way, depending on how the pattern is drawn.

@@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 Thank you for your reply. I think it would have turned out just fine. Turning it around and looking at the band from the end that you finish with instead of from the starting end it would be the same pattern, I think. Oooof! Granted, I have an affinity for all things New Zealand because my husband grew up in Hong Kong and his favorite rugby team has always been the AllBlacks. However... designing something as complex as a bird and a fern is still quite a bit beyond my skill set at this time. I am *not* an expert at tablet weaving--I am still constantly learning and my abilities and understanding of tablet weaving has expanded quite a bit just in this last year. I did a quick Google search and found a couple of bird-like patterns and a couple fern-like patterns--with very different widths and warp set-ups. You can experiment with those if you like, but I don't think I can commit the time to try to design something. Good luck!
