Well, the terrible things people do to old furniture - I still remember my parent painting their 1900 walnut furniture in screaming colours in the 70ies. They had a lovely trunk in oak, which ended up in Orange, Yellow & brown; many years later my dad finally had his lightbulb moment (“How could we ?”) and sanded the trunk back to bare timber - better, but all patina & signs of age were gone. How could they....

Omg my grandma has a beautiful bedroom set from the 1800’s and she painted over its natural colored wood and painted it blue!

People in the 70’s had no taste the only good things to come out in that era were cars.

$2500 for a piece of furniture from 1750 sounds like a good deal to me

Apparently, Cuban, also known as Spanish Mahogany, was the finest ever. Long gone, unfortunately.

Initially, people buy a table to use rather than to hold for a couple of generations in the hope of a great increase in value. Isn't that the way most of us buy furniture? If a piece of furniture/blanket/quilt/clock/ etc. is bought for our own use and it is used daily, that's all we ask. Sometimes an item is passed from one generation to the next and, in many such cases, the keepsake or emotional value is more important than the auction value. If we have an important need for the money we may sell it . . . with reluctance.

Yes. Ideally, you maintain the finish by caring for the furniture. (Some refinishing jobs are hideous.) But it's better to use the thing and occasionally get it repaired or refinished. For one thing, if you're lamenting the loss of $5k because you actually used the table, you'd be out a lot more than $5k if you had to store it for 170 years to sell it in pristine condition in 2022.

What frustrates me from time to time are the appraisals. Some furniture is appraised at less than what it would cost if a craftsman was to make something similar to day.

I think his estimate was too high, who's going to buy it for that much when the top is all gross and uneven

It’s furniture from when the states weren’t even considered a country. Try finding an English piece of furniture before Britain was a country for $100

Why call a George II style table 'Queen Anne' - she died in 1714?

So why is most 18th century American furniture appraised at at least the high five figures?

Those antiques Road Show people love drama. I’m waiting for the episode that includes: “Extraordinary table, circa July 27, 1747, workshop of James Buxton Trogdel of Philadelphia. One of the very first he produced. What would you say if I were to tell you this is one of only 4 known to still exists, and that at auction we would conservatively estimate its value at $378,000? And for insurance purposes, double that at $766,000?” ARS guest, practically swooning: “OMG, you made my day, my life, best day of my life, thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!” Appraiser: “actually I asked what you would say IF I said all those things! Your table is actually worth $675 at most, on a good day. Thank you for bringing it into Antiques Road Show.”

Stupid title given to this video and in the subtitle at end of video by Antiques Roadshow. How could it be a Queen Anne table it was made in 1750 when she had been long dead? The appraiser correctly tells us it was made during the reign of King George II.
@pauc9596
@pauc9596 3 года назад
@@David-fu5kb - Then he should clearly identify it as a Georgian, Queen Anne Style Table. Saying it is a Queen Anne table implies it was made during her time, which is not correct.
