I feel sorry for the folks out there who don't know about Phish. They are, hands down, the best show out there when you take into account the entire picture, and....AND they can evoke so much joy and heartfelt emotion from the depths of your soul and then spin your head and melt your face with their live performances it is literally ridiculous. I for one am so stoked to see Trey looking so happy and enjoying life, and I'm thoroughly enjoying the progressive evolution their music undergone.
Closest thing you'll get to a Grateful Dead show. Still galaxies apart unfortunately. Who will pick up the torch once the boys are gone for good? Trey's shown he isn't as invested. Someone what needs to arrive
Having been to around 115 Jerry Dead shows 1980-95 ) and 20 Phish-1994-2016 - (hopefully more to come when Covid is lifted), I consider myself very lucky. I just wish Jerry could have pulled a Trey and rejoiced in sobriety. Jer had an amazing personality, his interviews were funny and wow....we’d probably still be seeing both bands. Every other new years on a different coast. Or better yet, they could have shared a NYE bill in Mexico or something!

i can't tell if it's cool or not that they did the S show since they did an "M" show in '94(?). "Don't tell the same joke twice", etc - OTOH I can see trey doing something for an entire tour, as he says, just to go the other way with it. I really think that 94 era was the height of their creativity. The chess games, the language, the setlist concepts like the M show. The bottom line is there has never been a more creative live band (Dead included) and I will always keep listening.
Regarding the S show, in all fairness, that show included several covers. Though since then, who knows - they probably do have 23 originals. I'm stunned to find out that happened on the fly - I was certain there must have been some prior discussion that they were going to do that!
Fun fact: They've also done an animals only night (Turtle in the Clouds, Dog Faced Boy, etc) and a number night (Seven Below, 46 Days, Character Zero, etc.)
Good interview, not great, give it a solid B. a little too much trey in the mix, not enough back and forth, gnomesayin'. still solid interview for newbs and locals, but i've seen at the last 14 interviews and this one was nothing out of the ordinary ... that part about the fans being a bit persnickety was a high point. Don't think i'll be looking to trade for this tape. healthy phish is best phish KTHANXBI
I couldn't agree more that they're totally different, and different tastes are going to lean to one or the other. I often grumble at the typical response of "oh, you mean like the Dead" when I say I'm a phish fan. I certainly don't mean to start a flame war. When talking about all time great live bands, though, they are typically mentioned together at least. I wasn't aware of the breakfast thing, that's cool.
I was referring to their musical creativity, not necessarily the S set or other crowd interaction schtick. That said, what would you suggest the Dead ever did that was similarly interactive? The bottom line for me is that I've always been a fan of rock in general much more than Folk/Bluegrass, so Phish is more intrinsically appealing to me than the Dead.
They also spelled out F*CKYOURFACE, while also playing the song, followed by ‘Grind’ and ‘Meatstick’ -> and this all happened at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park lol.

Hmm interactive with the fans? The Dead gave breakfast to the entire crowd after new years eve one year, and ate with them. They didn't spell out anything in their setlist though. Schucks. Don't get me wrong phish is still good but why to phans always have to compare them to the dead when they are so far off and different.

I never said they didn't. I never tried to compare bands either, like most of you phans do. They are both great and are there own entity. However, saying phish is more creative than the dead like the original post did is laughable.

I don't know why, but the main thing is that it's "persnickety". you know what I mean? some days what you're looking for, as an aside, is even a bit weird. what you want, well, there are some peculiarities--what they matter or not, well, inconsequential probably and just fine ignored--always a good thing. good to have the option--no need to overthink it or dwell on it too much--sometimes your tastes and desires lean crooked, and who knows why, it's inexplicable.
