The initial 40% fan speed is just to makesure the combustion chamber is cool. It runs the fan for 120s when you first connect it to 12V. Leave it connected & it won't do it again. If you want to disable it, look in the Control tab in the Arduino IDE, line 32 which reads: if(burn_mode==0 && seconds
@DavidMcLuckie
@DavidMcLuckie 2 года назад
Excellent. Line 32 is what I changed as it said 600 seconds. Made it 120 for testing.

Simon, i have a quick question. How hard is it to modify the code to run in Arduino again? I have David's code controlling the heater in my garage, the only problem I see is that it shuts down after it reaches the set temperature. When the radiators and water cool down, it doesn't turn back on. As i understand your code has the ability to maintain a certain temperature. I'd love to try it out on my Arduino.

@@adomasleonovicius3807 It would be easy! I believe David is trying to make it work with a Pro-Mini, as he has lots of them apparently (watch this space I guess!). Rather than re-design the whole board, the simplest option I can see is to design an adaptor board such that your Microcontroller of choice plugs into the board which in turn plugs into the M0 socket. I completely understand where you are coming from - I think we all have 'favorite' processors. I just designed this around hardware I knew, and had sitting around.

Might be applicable for a air heater. I want to make the same thing for air heater. I would be adding a exhaust temp sensor as well so most of the layout of that code could save me time. Afterburner wont work for me as I need dual fuel pumps control

Cool project! Really interested to see how this can add new functionality to a diesel heater... Does the software also take care about setting room/water temperature and maintaining it?
@DavidMcLuckie
@DavidMcLuckie 2 года назад
Yes. You can input the temperature you want in the code and heater runs to maintain that temperature.
@Simon_Rafferty
@Simon_Rafferty 2 года назад
The short answer is No! The longer answer....I'm using it to heat water in a hot water cylinder, which provides hot water & underfloor heating in my camper van. The Webasto (like your boiler at home) heats the water to a fixed temperature then a room thermostat turns the circulating pump for the underfloor heating on & off.

@DavidMcLuckie

Not as a direct replacement. You'd need to make an adaptor board to swap inputs and outputs. Which is something I'd like to do so I can try using an Arduino Pro Mini.

HI David, I bought a Chinese webasto look alike for my Camper, a replacement for the deceased Eber I had. I want to use it as a night heater rather than a block heater. the china ECU has a few challenges! fundametally it heats the water to a set temp, then switches off, also it has a run time limit. not quite night heater behaviour! it does do a good job of making hot water via a plate heat echanger. The question, does Simon's design heat the water to a set point, then calm down to maintain the temp? also does it have a limited runtime? If it ticks these boxes, how confident can I be that it is safe under the van... appreciate you can't 'guarentee' it is safe etc... Thanks Ian
@DavidMcLuckie
@DavidMcLuckie Год назад
Helloooo. So most of the Chinese clones also cloned the Webasto software. But that was for preheating an engine. As you've found out it gets to something like 75ºC and then slows down until it hits 85ºC and then turns off. And like the Webastos it has a run time of 90 minutes if memory serves. Simons code is designed to sit a set temperature and maintain that. Full burn up to XºC and then it'll adjust fan and fuel to keep that, but it does have a high temperature set when it will shut down. As for safety Simon included a thermal fuse in the board design. He chose a 125ºC version, so should the case temperature melt that fuse it cuts the fuel supply. The only thing I haven't tested yet is if the heater starts back up again once the temperature falls.

@leighreid5480
@leighreid5480 Год назад
@@micklowe9924 If you mean why does the fan run at the start, Simon mentions in a comment it runs for 5 mins in case there was a power cut to the heater when it was running and it was coming back on when hot, the fan being on will cool down the unit and stop the coolant boiling. I think Simon mentions how to change this in the code, though another idea would be to only run the fan on start up if the water temp was over 50 deg c I guess. It's a safety feature but you don't have to wait for the fan to stop before you start the heater. You can apply the 12v start signal straight away if you want it to start immediately.

Im trying to run a d5wz and having no luck at all. The learning curve on arduino IDE is massive. I don't understand how to view the serial data; the only time i can even see the board on a COM port is by putting it into programming mode by double clicking the reset button. The heater seems to do something when power is applied and I really want to see the code running as I know the code will need tweeking to get working with a different setup. Im also burning out FET's left and right even with heat sinks. I had to use a relay for the glow plug because of this but it seems that the heater only wants to do anything if theres an actual load present like even a small bulb applied across the relay. I also seemed to brick or fry one feather already, no idea how. This thing has all these different status rainbow lights and shit but nobody will tell you what it means. I cant seem to get either feather to do the " rainbow led" thing when plugged into USB anymore, not sure if that goes away if theres a "sketch (is that their term for friggen code? ) . I wish i could also just read the board and see whats programmed on it to verify with my eyes its got the code on it. I got a thermotop on the way but i figured id try to get my d5 going since the thermotop is a month out. Ill buy more feathers and build up a new board with the thermotop and give it another go...i guess.

v2.1. But I'm not too discouraged yet, I get the thermotop tomorrow and will build it back up again for that heater. @@DavidMcLuckie The arduino ide is the difficult part, I was never able to see rolling code to see what the heater was doing. It might have just been fried. I think the D5wz uses a very high current glow plug. No matter what, it seemed to want to cook the mosfet immediately even thermal pasted to a large piece of copper. I know this heater works because It started briefly before but shut down and locked out control unit.The fan FET was also getting hotter than I liked. Anyway, Ill try again with the thermotop and a fresh board/feather with all fets heatsank and that glow plug one screwed to the thermotop housing. Ill then try to get a D5WZ to run with one with some software tinkering.

If I had to pick based on your list of comparisons, cost, space, ease of install and use. It would be a Propex 10L mains powered combination water heater and storage tank. Once it's up to temp, cold water goes in and pushes hot water out. Once that's been mixed with more cold water to your desired temp, 10L of 85ºC makes at least two showers. Powered from camp hookup or van inverter. If we were camping in the van with no hookup you just turned it on while you drove to the campsite and let the alternator power the inverter and charge the leisure batteries.
