THANK YOU!!! My Mom and her sisters used to sing this song when they got together, so many decades ago! Mom would be 100 this year if she were still alive. I couldn't remember the name of this song, or anything but the last sad verses. A Google search brought me here. Sweet memories, I can still hear the "Cackle Sisters" (as my Dad called them) singing this great old ballad. They learned this song from their Mother, who died in 1932 when they were young. They were very poor, so singing was their entertainment, and these songs were the only "things" that their Mama could pass down to them. I'm learning to sing these songs in honor of my Grandmother I never got to meet. My only child was born on her birthday, and like her, he is left-handed. First lefty in our family since her.
Should have been a much bigger hit, Webb was demonized by a lot of people in the country music business, AS Carl Smith said Nashville had to have someone to demonize and Webb was it. So sad
