Fascinating comparison Johnny, I’ve always used webers. Mine holds 93 briquettes which I do use full sometimes. The wire baskets fairly decent at holding used small pieces, couldn’t tell if that would be an issue with some of the other ones. Great job Johnny!

I have both a Weber and a cheap expert grill brand from Walmart chimney. The expert grill is noticable smaller, and it takes noticably longer for the coals to get ashed over on top. Even a full Weber with more coals in it gets going faster than the smaller cheap one. Now I just need a Weber kettle master touch to go with it and I can scrap my cheap off brand grill.

Wow I have the same set up , the Weber Rapid Chimney and the Walmart Expert grill chimney. And I've got a Sam's Club Members Mark kettle grill with a 22.5 " cast iron cooking grate. When my cast iron cooking grate got damaged, I replaced it with a Heavy Duty and I mean Heavy Duty .25 " stainless steel wire cooking grate , love it. I got the SS wire cooking grate off of Amazon for about $70 .

Lump charcoal will come up to temp MUCH faster than briquettes if you need a quick fire. Start it up with one Weber cube, hit it with an old hair dryer, and you can have a raging fire in 6 or 7 minutes. This is what I tell guys who use gas grills who complain charcoal takes too long. Yeah, standard briquettes with standard starting methods do take too long.

It's Sunday afternoon and I went to Lowe's because they had a sale on Kingsford original charcoal, 2- 20 lbs for $16.98; 40 lbs for 17 bucks is a pretty good price, but I'm glad I caught your video first because while there I also bought the Weber Chimney starter that you shown for 19 bucks. They also had the Kingsford one also and was 8 dollars cheaper, but it was a lot smaller, so I bought the Weber but I won't be barbecuing until next Sunday but because of this video I'm confident that I made the right choice. I have a Weber but think I preferred the slower starting ones. With those I could light the chimney, then prepare the food, cut vegetables, etc. and the charcoal would be ready about the time I was ready to cook. With the Weber I have to prepare the food first, then light the charcoal so it actually wastes 10 or 15 minutes. The quick release chimneys looks like they could be a disaster waiting to happen.

I've only used the Weber ones, full size and half sized ones (for 14" and 18" grills and WSM) and love them. When I've had the big one at 3/4 full or more, that second wire handle really comes in handy for stability and pour aim, I think it's a great feature and I've never needed a glove for it. Even with the main handles I don't always have a glove on, I've just never known them to be too hot? I think I often pour at the 12-15 mark, not as long s you went. Great overview!

After 12 years i finally had to retire my Weber chimney starter, i replaced rivets with bolts and there were holes forming all over, so today i purchased the Char Griller chimney partial because the Weber was out of stock but the Char griller was the first bottom dump ive seen that has a similar capacity for coals and i always wanted to try a bottom dump, one reason was i sometimes would get a sting from the embers flying up when i dumped it wheras the heat shield on the Char Griller seemed to block it when i released the coals, time will tell if it lasts as long as my old Weber did.

Johnny I liked this. I'm simply a Webber guy. That's the only chimney started I have purchased. I've had several standard chimneys and one of their short ones ( very nice when you don't need a full chimney like starting my IVS. My only complaint with Webber on their chimneys is they wear out to fast. Anyway what I find amusing to me about chimney starters is how many folks still don't know about them. I believe I have mentioned before my Grandfather started teaching me how to grill when I was about 5 years old so that would be about 57 years ago. The reason I mention this is because my grandfather showed me how to light the charcoal ( it was Kingsford) using a chimney starter. Except no one was manufacturing chimney starters back then. He would just use a big #10 sized coffee can. No handle, just a pair of offset channlock pliers ( I always keep a pair in my bbq tools bucket as necessary equipment) He'd just cut a second hole in the other end. Then he would insert a electric heating element you can still get to start the brickets. Pull it out in about 8 minutes, let it finish and that was that. You have no idea how many folks I have taught how to use a coffee can to light for a chimney starter when visiting them at their bbq. For lighting I just bunch up some newspaper, pour the charcoal on top. Light the newspaper by tilting the can enough to light the newspaper and set it back upright. It actually works pretty darned well. Anyway I apologize for the trip into the "way back machine ". Have a great day, if you see this today see you to night on Dashes live. 🌤🔥👍🍻

Great vid. My 2 cents worth considering I was taught that it takes 2 beers to get the grill hot enough I would worry a lot about the bottom release mechanism . So guess I’ll have to go for the weber. Cheers Johnny 👍 .from New Zealand.

Bought the kingsford charcoal chimney for 11.99 at Lowe’s. They also sell a Weber for 19.99. Trust me and go for the Weber. I ended up getting the Weber. The kingsford does ok, but you’ll be much happier with the Weber

Nice comparison Johnny! I like the concept of the drop away basket. I'm not sure if that would be a pain or not in the long run. It's nice for barrel cookers that are tight quarters though! Being able to start earlier is a big deal too!

Kingsford is $12 on Amazon and works extremely fast. Handle isn't loose. If so tighten screw. When I pour the coal out all the heat goes out the bottom no harm to the user. Char grill handle was just as loose.

Hey Pogo. They all get the job done. I think the most important thing is that you use one of these instead of lighter fluid. Take care.

It’s probably safer to use gloves and Weber’s second handle gives a lot more control. It sells for about $22. I’m not sure about the dropping bottoms.

Hi Johnny! What a very cool video and thank you for being so thorough! It just so happens that I am looking for a Weber Chimney Starter right now. Of course there are TWO different Weber Starters that makes the decision more difficult: the Weber That why I am reaching out for your opinion! I hope you'll help me. So the two Weber starters are Model # 7416 and the other is Model 7429. The latter is about $12.00 more to purchase and I have no clue why. I am using a Weber Master Touch grill here and yeah putting this new baby together right now. Hope to hear from you soon Johnny.

The 7416 is the one I used in the video. The 7416 is also the one sold on the Weber website. I have seen the 7429 on Amazon but I don’t know what the difference is.

Interesting. I have the Kingsford chimney and in less than 10 minutes my coals were ready and the handle was not hot in the slightest. Perhaps the type of charcoal makes a big difference. Since charcoal that heats up faster won't 'cook' the handle as long.

Was looking to finally getting a chimney. I was looking at Weber and glad this confirms on the brand. I’m still between the bigger one or a smaller Weber. The quick release seems nice but for some reason I think it would be sturdier if it’s just pour
@Viewtoagrill
@Viewtoagrill 3 года назад
Hello Mathew. The quick release is actually kind of dangerous. If you accidentally pull the trigger to soon... hot coals on Will spill out.

Back in my Scouting days, we made these out of #10 cans (or old coffee cans) that were past using as billies...they either got painted red for fire water buckets or turned into chimney starters. With a drill, wire snips and 4 gage steel wire, you were good to go. The commercial ones are much nicer but don't like spending a lot on these, since they are fairly disposable.
@Viewtoagrill
@Viewtoagrill 4 года назад
Hey Mike! When I was a kid my dad would pour lighter fluid on the coals... he doesn't any more LOL.. That is a great memory to have. Does coffee still come in can?...hmm... the coffee my wife buys for me is in a bag. Take care Mike and welcome to my channel. Be safe.
