I'd add "removing the lid" for the next cleaning. The quick release pins make it a snap and it's a simpler way to clean both pieces when they aren't in danger of slamming shut while you're scrubbing/rinsing.

I gave mine the Spring cleaning a few weeks ago. Like you, cleaned the burner tube first then took the dismantled grill to the coin operated car wash after scraping the mess out of the cook box. $4 for 20 minutes. Pressure washed like crazy and left the mess there. The Easy Off is a great idea. My Q is over six years old and will have to replace the burner tube with the next cleaning probably in the Fall of the year. NO complaints.......

I only use my Q for 5 or 6 camping trips per year so every time I get home I simply scrape the big stuff out, disassemble it, and run it through the dishwasher and throw it back together. It looks brand new every time! And it’s so easy.

Hi Steve- which parts do you put in the dishwasher? I’m guessing the lid and the grates and debris catcher, but surely not the base? I think Weber say don’t put the grates in the dishwasher. I don’t know why because they are enamelled after all so won’t rust. Cheers
@stevestratton1888
@stevestratton1888 4 года назад
I put in the shells, the grates, the grease tray, and the burner tube. I dont’t wash the plastic base, the handle, the thermometer, the igniter,or the regulator assembly. Before I reassemble everything I spray the plastic base down with some simple green and wipe it off real good. I don’t really care if Weber says not to put it in the dishwasher I’d rather replace my grill a little early and have a nice clean grill all the time👍🏻

Thanks for this tutorial. My grill is so clean. I was worried the ignitor wouldn't work after spraying it down. Every thing works just fine and feels like it's brand new again. My only regret is that I didn't wear gloves while using the oven cleaner. It's highly corrosive and can painfully hurt your finger nails and hands. Overall, "Keep on grillin" everyone.😁

Hey Jesse I wore gloves because I didn't want to get my hands all greasy. Good point about the oven cleaner. Also, the ignition on these things is amazing. I have never changed the battery in mine and it still (after 4 years) works on one press every time.

This is great, but I live on the second floor of an apartment building and can't easily take my grill downstairs to the car wash area and back for hosing down. But I scrape down the bowl after every 3 or 4 uses (or more frequently if I've made something that leaves a lot of fat behind) and scrape the grill with a brush before grilling and sometimes after (so the remnants don't smell the next time I cook; just thinking of my neighbors). I did clean out the holes in the grill bar once and that made a huge difference. My Q1000 is six years old and going strong, and I second the recommendation for the cart.
@GallaghersGrub
@GallaghersGrub 4 года назад
Thanks for the great comment Melissa. You really don't need to do a deep clean like this. Just scraping out the grease every now and then and cleaning out the tube and poking the holes is all you really need to do for the most part.

I have literally disassembled my Q yesterday. Soaked it with Simple Green over night in a huge plastic mixing pan from Lowe's and took it up to the carwash to use the "high pressure" wand. The pieces being the support legs, the bottom and the lid. EZ PZ right? Wrong. That was not successful, so back to the house to try something else. Tried some AWESOME from The Dollar Tree store. I had been using Awesome to degrease truck engines and the like with some real good results over the last 10 years or so. NoGo at this station. Wife says that we had some of that citrus degreaser in the laundry room. Tried that and nothing. I do have a 4000psi pressure washer but I am holding off on that for now as I do not have a concrete or paved driveway to set the pieces on. Tomorrow I am going to get some spray oven cleaner. I know most say not to use on aluminum, but it will be a "Wham Bam, thank you Ma am" process. I am trying to get it to where the caked on layer of grease is gone off the lid and the bottom, so I can repaint it with high heat engine paint. The grill is about 6 years old now and it is used every week. It gets cleaned fairly often (every other week - bottom inside, burner tube with the grates each time it is used) and the outside I guess not enough. I love this grill. It is on a hillbilly" tool cart setup with 2 20lb bottles, 2 HFT fold up shelves on each side, wide track stance with 10" knobby tire/wheel combo steerable casters on one side. I live in the southern part of NC so I am playing with the weather (temps below 50 and rain). PS: DAWN dish detergent did not work either.

@@GallaghersGrub Oven cleaner and hose on JET setting got it cleaned up along with some extra vigorous scrubbing. Then VHT Hemi Orange High Temp engine paint for the lid and VHT Flat Black High Temp header paint for the bottom. (Exterior only) Lined the bottom with HD aluminum foil. Just literally came in the house with the lid (missed a couple of places) and am waiting for it to dry completely before doing the "paint set/cure" heat up of the grill before I actually use it this afternoon for Italian sausage and brats. I still need to delouse the cart and repaint, but that will not stop me from grilling. Thanks for the channel, your efforts, the recipes and shared information. I do the same thing, I looked it up too. It says not to line the grates with foil and then turning the grill on high, resulting in restriction of air flow damaging internal components. Also about lining the bottom of grill with foil, the bottom is designed to maximize the flow of grease into the catch pan, foil lining the bottom causes creases and ridges which can result in buildup...grease fires, flare ups. I think as long as I change mine every 2 to 3 grills I will be alright.

Two questions : 1. My brother said don't clean the grill too well or the "food doesn't taste as good". Is there any truth to that? 2. Rather than use a grill brush, I've been washing my grates in the sink every time I use my grill. Is that overkill? My brother thinks I'm very silly 😁 He's like, "if I had to do that every time I cooked I'd never want to use my grill!" I just love how pretty the ceramic is in the grates and not sure if a grill brush would damage them. (I'm a very inexperienced griller, obviously ) Love this channel! I watch a video a day now.
@GallaghersGrub
@GallaghersGrub 4 года назад
There may be some truth that a "seasoned" grill will provide better taste, but after one or two cooks, the Q is likely seasoned again, so it's not a big deal. Some people are more obsessive about cleaning their grills than I am (or everything for that matter Lol!). For me, I like to scrape the grates with a grill brush every time the grill is hot - before placing on the food and after taking it off. A grill brush should not damage the grates, but be sure to use a Weber grill brush because the bristles can break off the cheaper ones and get in your food.
@misslydialove

I think warming up the grill a bit before each use and then using Weber grill brush on the grates gets them just as clean as the soap and sink would (on the surface your food touches anyway...no need to get the bottoms of the grates clean every time). I certainly couldn't do that chore every time I grilled! Then again I guess it depends on your grilling techniques/skills too.

The hole cleaning is a bit of an issue. The holes close up from burnt oily fumes and such. I mostly use the oxy acet torch tip cleaner. Available at most hardware stores. What it does is actually scubs off that carbon. Poking the holes may not thoroughly clean the holes. I have checked this several times by looking closely at the holes and comparing differing ways of cleaning them out. And no, you will not increase the opening of the holes using the tip cleaner. Make sure you scrub out the holes, not just poke and move on. Also, I rarely need to do a complete cleaning because I keep it clean at all times.
