I got a q2200 last spring soon after you influenced me to start with the q1200. I love them both. Thank you city griller! My q2200 is however grass green, I found a rare John Deere Edition with the logo handle. You made me a back yard star!

I own a Q2200. I think it's perfect for a small patio and cooks nicely for 2 - 4 people. It's also portable enough and gas efficient. On the other hand Q1200, is ok for 2 people though you can't easily have your meat cooked together with veggies. But it's ideal for beach and camping anf of course for a fire escape😀. Thank you for this very interesting comparison and of course... keep on grilling🤗

The Q1200 puts out 44.97 BTU per square inch vs 42.85 on the Q2200. In theory the smaller grill should heat up quicker here, you might have a faulty thermometer.

Really enjoy watching your Weber Q videos! Just wanted to share that I have had a Weber Q 1200 for less than a year, and when I have run mine on the lowest setting, it does get hotter than yours here - mine is 400 degrees or a little more after 20 min, and 325 to 350 degrees before that.

Make sure you poke a pin or tack through all of the holes on the burner tube at least once or twice a year. You probably want to take off the burner tube every now and then and empty it out. Will help with your temps.

I've had the Q1200 for 8 to 10 years. I quickly bought a 20 lb tank conversion hose for it. Those little canisters are expensive and their performance tails off after the first use. I used to refill them, but that got old fast. It has held up well except for the aluminum grease drip pan. The drip pan is too small. It is a hassle to clean because the grill stays hot for a half hour or so after cooking. The grill continues to drip grease into the drip pan for at least a half hour. So I don't empty it out right away, and then I for get about it until after it has rained. Then the drip pan is overflowing all over the patio. The disposable aluminum liners are a cost I prefer to avoid. Yep, I'm cheap, I mean frugal, like that. To solve these problems I put a large steel bowl (made as a water pan for a kettle smoker) below the grill. I set the grill on top of a steel expanded metal patio table. The plastic wings are extremely flimsy and almost useless. I only use them because they are there, to set my matches down (yes matches) and sometimes a spatula. I just haven't gotten "a round tuit" for removing them. I'm afraid they will break off if I so much as set a full stainless steel vacuum drink cup on them. The igniter failed years ago. For the price of a new igniter I can buy 10 lifetimes worth of matches. The only problem with matches is that you have to remove the cooking grate to light it. I have used a butane grill lighter through the grate slots, but that is not any easier than removing the grate. I made a couple of heavy wire hooks to lift the grate off in case I have to relight it when the wind blows the flame out. Every thing else about it works as well at the day it was new. There is NO RUST, not even on the burner tubes. It cooks very well. It is not very good as a smoker because the flames don't get low enough. QUESTION: Speaking of using it as a smoker...has anyone out there tried to lower the lowest heat setting by partially closing the tank valve or by plugging some of the burner holes?
@GallaghersGrub
@GallaghersGrub 3 года назад
I have not tried to get the flames any lower. I think they'd just go out. The starter on my 2200 doesn't work either and I use a long lighter. The plastic side tables... That's where I put my beer. Be sure to check out my Restoring video series. A three part series on cleaning and restoring Weber Qs. Just uploaded the third one today.

I have experienced and read a lot of issues connecting the adapter hose to use the large tanks with the Q grills. Would love to know the temp difference of the grates for searing, Cook a simular steak on both of them and compare the sears, I bet the larger one does a much better job. There is a 40% btu/h difference between the grills, and the grate surface areas have a 48% difference, so Weber did this right, (Unlike their terrible design of the Genesis EP310 which is lacking big in the BTU/H output and has difficulty in the winter months and the steaks are delicious but always look pale, )

Neither of these for slow cooking at low temps. You need a grill with two or three burners. I'd recommend either a Weber Spirit three burner, or a Weber Genesis II. Also, you can look for a used Weber gas grill with multiple burners, preferably three. Cheers!

It's my understanding that these 2 units are engineered to operate identical. For instance, a high heat setting on the 1200 should produce the same temp as the 2200 when the knobs are both set equally. Maybe you should explore the possibility that one of the thermometers are off. I purchased a Weber Genesis 320 in 2009 that had a bad thermometer, and it would never register above 500 even though it was operating at 600. You could even tell by how the needle was twisting at high temp's that it was faulty.

My guess is that the more you use these grills, a layer of grease forms on the built in thermometers and that affects the readout. I'm not sure. The bigger Q2200 definitely gets hotter, but the Q1200 can still sear up an excellent steak.

Very interesting videos. I've been trying to make a paella on my Q1200, which I've only had a for a couple of months... it doesn't get hot enough to heat the pan. I don't know if it's because I'm still using the 500g portable gas canisters, maybe I need to use a 5kg gas cylinder. I will convert it anyway. Is the Q2000 able to heat up a pan to make paella? I'm wondering if I should have gone for the Q2200. From what I've read, the power for the Q1200 and 2200 is 2.56 and 3.56 kW respectively, and a small paella burner is at around 6 kW, but if you or anyone have tried to make paella on the Q2200 and succeeded, I'd be interested to know. The second thing in your video is the size. I guess that in addition to the number of people, the amount of grilled foods that they tend to eat could be taken into account. I've made kebabs and grilled shrimp for 4 adults and 2 kids (4 and 5 years old) on the Q1200, but we had rice and salad on the side. That said, it was just twice,. Most of the time, the Q1200 is fine for cooking for myself, wife and daughter, and at the same time, I feel that I'm not really pushing the grill to anywhere near its limits, although as before, we tend to have side dishes not cooked on the grill. If we were talking about certain neighbours and friends, however, who barbeque a lot, and eat a fair amount, then it's clear that they'd need the 2200, even though the two families are of the same size. Anyway, thanks for the videos, I really enjoy and learn from them.
@GallaghersGrub
@GallaghersGrub 2 года назад
With the Weber Q, you need to close the lid every time you grill. If your paella tray is too big to close the lid, it will not get hot enough to cook. The Q2200 will close with a bigger paella tray than the 1200. Hope this helps. Cheers!

@GallaghersGrub Год назад
I haven't tested the time you get on the Q2200 with a single 1-lb tank. The 2200 heats up faster than the 1200. You can get it to full heat in about 8-10 minutes vs about 10-12 with the 1200. Each room temp medium sized steak will cook for about 3-4 minutes per side for medium rare. If you don't actually leave the gas on due to beer, you'd be shutting the gas down within 20 total minutes. So I'd guess you could probably get at least 5 steak cooks with the Q2200 on a 1-lb tank, maybe more.
