Oh yeah, making comics is way more physically straining that I thought it would be-- Like, I knew it was going to be mentally and emotionally straining, but physical? I had no idea. My muscles in my arms are sore from having to draw all day, and by the end of the day I'm so tired from working all day that I pass out immediately. But getting to post the episode after pouring blood, sweat and tears into it is SO worth all the pain :)
@walterostlie

Yeah, I feel that. Sitting at the table, just being drained by comics and it's like "why am I doing this to myself" But once you finish and put that comic out into the world and we can say "look at what I made out of nothing", That's what makes it worth it.

That's the most balanced work schedule I've ever seen for an artist! In most cases, they are either extremely streamlined, or not at all (more commonly the latter). Because I'm easily distracted, I try to work in bursts of 1-1.5 hours and then take a short 5-10 minute break in between to walk around, talk to someone f2f, stretch or use social media occasionally. I have found that this habit has improved my focus and productivity immensely! Great vid as always, Walter!

Yea, i think it's super important to figure out what works specifically for that person. Not everyone is wired the same. Really just about being honest with yourself and really looking at were your time is actually going. If the person is happy with that time allocation then that's what works for them.

I have so much respect for Webtoon creators. The audience and format kind of demand longer episodes, which can be the equivalent of 5 “regular” pages, and some do every week! :o I can’t draw any longer than 5 hours a day, if I have a day off. Even with enough breaks. (the Sign Language interpreter/comic creator combo is very physically demanding) After that the quality just drops and I will start experiencing pain and fatigue. I think it depends on the person how much drawing you can do. (Though a lot can be trained, like good posture, doing wrist and hand exercises, etc.) Some people have different limits, and that’s ok. You just need to find a comic format and schedule that works for you.
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 года назад
Agreed, it's all about seeing what others do and customizing and combining into something that makes sense for you. Sign language interpreter, I imagine that has to be mentally taxing. Does it take a toll on your fingers and hands as well?

Another thing to consider when thinking about long-term pace is your physical health as well. I've set a pace which is perfect for me mentally and emotionally, but the tendons in my wrist have begun to display a very different opinion about it. It sucks to have to slow yourself down due to physical injury, but if you make sure to set an upload schedule a little slower than the rate at which you can work, you can take a week or two for recuperation without delaying an episode or having to put your comic on hiatus. Like a lot of WEBTOON creators, I'd love to be featured... but that workload really frightens me, given the warning signs my wrist is starting to display. The best I can put out, even when my wrist is not acting up, is around 20 panels per week. (My style is pretty time-intensive.) I'd need frequent hiatuses between chapters to pull back ahead for a weekly release of 50+ panels.
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 года назад
Agreed. It is good to set a schedule, but if you realize a schedule is too intense, it is okay to slow the schedule down. Eventually you'll land on a healthy and productive schedule that makes the most sense. Not everyone can work the same schedule and that's totally okay. Mental and physical health first to achieve balance. Yeah, webtoon original schedule is not easy. I am looking forward to a vacation once my story is complete. I do love that with Kickstarter and Patreon, being an Original is not a requirement to being a full-time webtoon creator.

Huu boy, working on the same project for a few days, I can definitely feel the toll in my body once I was done. I would at least take a whole day of not doing anything art-related before getting back on track. Recently tho, I would find myself wanting to do some traditional drawings as a break from digital. Simply doing loose sketches with a real pencil just feels satisfying and sometimes thetapeutic. And as someone who has scoliosis, I would need to constantly stretch in-between work :"D

Thanks again for making these helpful videos! It really helps to keep my motivation up! I have definitely felt the effects of exhaustion from making comics. There were times when I didn't understand how I could get so worn out just sitting at a desk but a lot of it it is mentally taxing. It's almost like taking a test in school because I am constantly second-guessing myself. I sketch, erase and then re-sketch scenes, trying to get things right all while trying to keep in mind the pacing, thinking of the dialogue, trying to figure out if I should add or drop a scene, trying to figure out the best way to show something, how to make it more dynamic, how to make it look good for Webtoon. It can definitely be hard sometimes but so worth it.

Thank you thank you thank you for this video! It really helped me see where I am at, I always thought I was super slow when drawing, or that I needed more hours of the day to do everything. I take breaks and I seek to take care of myself, but still felt i wasn't enough. Each one has their learning processes and their own rhythm, and I should have respected that in myself more. My schedule is somewhat similar in terms of working hours, so I was frustrated not finishing the number of panels I wanted. What I am trying to say with all this is that seeing your schedule helped me understand that a comic it is not done overnight. and that I was over demanding a lot of myself. Thank you!

This was really great! Do you have any tips for drawing the background? Maybe like outside scenes? Most of the first part of the story I’m writing is set in a forest/cave and I don’t know how to go about drawing what i imaging the scene to look like. I don’t want to get worn out if it’s to complicated but I still want it to look good. Any advice?
@DrawnbyYannan
@DrawnbyYannan 3 года назад
Jumping in with my two cents - Something I do with a difficult background is I find a reference image that is close enough to what I want, manipulate it a bit if needed, insert the image into the panel until it looks right, and trace/draw over it. After doing this a few times I started to "see" the relationship between characters and backgrounds and I didn't need to trace quite so much. Just be careful when choosing photos to trace over - use a website like pexels.com that has royalty-free images.

I have a question. Does an original creator have to update every week or can negotiate the schedule with webtoon. Like make every two weeks.
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 года назад
I don't know of any original creators that do every two weeks, doesn't mean it's not possible, I just don't know of one. There are some that do twice a week. I think in a situation like that, they would just wait until you finished drawing all the episodes and then start posting them once a week. As an original creator, you have to finish the first 10-15 episodes before it goes live anyways.

My wife works from home as a freelancer also. So that's the only person I hang out with normally. So we take off thursdays, because places aren't as busy as they are on the weekend. So if we go out to dinner , it's usually calmer and faster.
