New into photography here, got myself an a7 iii with a 24-70 2.8 and after watching all these videos saying i need a bunch of different primes, its relieving to see you guys take killer shots with primarily zoom lens and a prime or two. Great video, super informative!

Loved reading this! Photography is more about the use of light than any specific lens. Primes are a way to quick hack the system for a beautiful look, but getting great images is a merging of posing, light, color, composition, editing, and even lens choice. Also, I think the "rocking back and forth/Fake Walk" thing you did with the bridesmaids probably got better reactions and genuine smiles from all of them than just having a walking shot. I'm going to use that method regardless of the wetness of the grass from now on.

I would love love to see more from those terribly lit rooms. It’s an issue we all struggle with and the reason I haven’t done weddings yet. I don’t feel comfortable with flash but would love to see how you handle/edit something like that. Great video!

No problem! Glad it's helpful! We change our lighting style up depending on the wedding and what's available. If we're feeling lazy, we'll go on camera and 1 off. Just depends on the situation.

I wish I had the money to pay for even one photographer (Miss KJ All Access), let alone, several on Patreon (Taylor Jackson and a few more), but I just don't have it in the way life has dealt the cards I currently have, so I GREATLY APPRECIATE all you do to put these here on RU-vid for those of us in the photography community who are still truly trying to learn and make enough to one day afford all those extra educational opportunities. This is absolutely great! I especially like how you get to react with your customers and everyone present. I hope he realized that his friends will get on him about using an umbrella while in uniform. The regulation does not allow it.

Thanks Juan. All of his friends in uniform were there during those photos and said nothing about using an umbrella while in uniform. Does holding an umbrella for a citizen, and in this case- his wife on her wedding day, still change the rules? Either way, it doesn’t matter. We weren’t gonna let them get soaking wet whether in uniform or not on there wedding day. Thanks for the compliments though

Oh, question about your 70-200. I’ve been renting mine a couple times, would you suggest purchasing one?

Thanks so much!! As far as the 70-200 goes, it depends on if it is cost effective enough for you. We purchased when we knew we’d need to rent it for every wedding that year and if buying it outright saved us money based on how many weddings we had scheduled for the future when comparing it to the price of renting then we made the decision to buy. Hopefully that makes sense

Hi! Josiah i have a quick question: For the reception, were you controlling both off camera flashes with your camera/trigger, or was your assistant using one as well?

Also what stuck in my head when you mentioned you didn't get a few shots of the guests reactions (parents during the aisle walking, cake cutting scene) was 'Ah man, maybe he should've had his assistant get those moments while he gets the main shots, or visa versa!' But I'm sure you'll remember to capture those candid's cause you're awesome! :D

Jehan Martinez thanks dude. Yeah, sometimes we just prioritize certain photos over others. Easy in the moment to forget or miss certain photos and in hindsight on video see all the moments you could’ve snapped. Just a balance and I always prioritize bride coming down aisle and grooms reaction.

Only using natural light. We use flash primarily during the reception.

Lucas Mikó I am primarily a natural light only shooter until the reception when I absolutely need to use flash. If I don’t have to use flash then I won’t.

Great content. One of my favorites. As a solo shooter, I’ve been shooting wedding parties with the 24-70. I never thought of using the 70-200, but I like the way they look. We’re you shooting those at 200mm?

Shooting the bridal party at an 85mm wide open at 1.8. Love the look but I really had to back up. I love the 50mm and 85mm - I’m sure 200mm would love dope though.

Amazing as usual!! A few q's. What was your aperture at for the big group shot? I sometimes have an issue with getting enough separation but not having everyone perfectly sharp. And when it rains are you ever worried about your gear? My canon lenses are weather sealed but it still makes me so nervous!!

The big bridal party shot was on an 85mm wide open at f/1.8. The lens is what gave me separation from the background. I do get nervous about rain but it wasn’t raining hard enough for me to worry about it during this wedding. I only get worried if it’s a torrential downpour and if that’s the case, I wouldn’t be outside with the couple. We’ve been caught in the rain though during a ceremony and have had a camera break so it does suck.

I have no idea… also depends on where I’m shooting in the video and what the light is like at a specific time. Likely 6000k for most outside stuff.

Something I've noticed in many of these videos... Everytime there is a female shooter she always look like just came from dropping kids to the school, meanwhile guys are always well dressed. Why??

arunashamal careful here. That is my wife. Also, she is wearing a dress... we wear attire that we’d normally wear to a wedding as guests. We are also on our feet all day and working hard so wearing something that is semi comfortable, easy to move around in and not have to worry about a dress that is going to reveal anything is helpful.

Told my wife to move I think twice... and only because she was on the very edge of my frame. Telling her to slide out real quick is not an issue. If she tried to stay so far out of my shot that she was poorly composing the image then I’d have a bigger issue with that. I’d rather her get the shot that looks good than decide to move so far out of frame that I end up not using the photo at all... and all so I don’t have to say those 7 words, “Steph, slide to your left a bit.” Who cares?
