I started with free sessions the first 3 jobs I got. 2 were graduation and 1 was an anniversary. By word of mouth I got my first wedding last year. I charged $150. Then the single mother of one of the free graduations I did was so happy with the way the graduation photos went for her daughter that she booked me for her wedding (which was last weekend). I charged $400 for that one. Since I did the engagement session for her, she had them in her wedding and people asked who took those and now I have some people who are interested in booking me. I’m slowly gaining more volume and now that I have some experience and have a decent portfolio I want to have a website to show my work and promote myself. Your videos have been very helpful. I really enjoy the behind the scenes videos and they have given me ideas of what to do and what to expect. Great videos!

Agreed completely! I think it's a balance. Your business doesn't exist in a vacuum. Sure, you should *consider* how much you want to make, your business expenses, life expenses, etc. but you also have to consider your talent, the market in your area, competitive pricing, trends, the economy, etc.

I love how honest you are about doing what you can to get your business off the ground. I noticed that alot of people in the industry wont even acknowledge you even if you offer to pay them for portfolio building jobs. Even if you are not a direct competition to them.

This pricing myth is so useful for starters

I once got ripped off on a wedding I did for long time family friends.... all I wanted was $100..... the father of the bride said I shouldn’t get anything because I ate and partied (I skipped their meal because I simply wasn’t a guest so I didn’t think they had a meal reserved for me, which they didn’t, and I did NOT “party”). When I gave them the pictures which they told me I would also get paid they took the CD and said I’d get paid at the end of the month (again, “long time family friends”). When the end of the month came they acted surprised and said they didn’t know I “needed” money.... Then they didn’t like the pictures, which could of fooled me by how many prints they made and framed and mounted on their wall and posted to their social media. Their problem with the pics? They asked where “all the pics” are..? They said I took 10 pictures of them all together but only gave them 1.... I explained I took 10 pics of kids picking their noses and 10 pics of people looking in other directions and I gave them the best pic of the 10, it was 10 pics of the same damn thing basically. The mother looks confused and again says “but... where are all the pics? You took 10 of all of us..?”. Ugh... I don’t do “friends” pictures anymore... I also don’t “bring your expensive camera and take pics of everything too”, their hired photographer will want you dead even if you stand in a corner and take shots without a flash and use a fast lens, the sight of your pro camera will piss them off.

Amazing wedding photography

Gleamed a few golden nuggets from this so totally appreciated. I love photography and have done 3 weddings for free, (one i was flown to a location, i offered to pay) nugget #1 hire someone for the post processing if time poor, and if needed. I’m ok at this but there are way better gurus at post processing quicker and better cost effective. Nugget #2 relax have fun, cell phone photographers, mothers, all can be fixed with communication, I’m always looking for that emotional, connection photo, end state ppl like Taylor re-enforces that we love what we do, thank you

@Taylor Jackon I wish you would have mentioned on average how many weddings you do in a years time to help people to understand how to price per wedding to come up with a yearly revenue whether its $10,00 or less a year (Partime Photographer) to $100,000 a year full-time photographer with 10 plus years of experience.

I’m putting together a kit for wedding, I’m buying a 85 1.4 , I own a 35 and 50 1.4. Would you say a 70-200 2.8 is necessary? I own a 70-200 f4l but not sure if that will cut it and the 2.8 is necessary for the 70-200.

In your local area, I recommend Never be the cheapest because that can make you loose clients even if they like your portfolio even if it is your first year. Just be a few hundred dollars more. You don't want to be known as a weekend warrior who is way underpricing in your area. Destination weddings If you can shoot in an epic place yes do whatever it takes to shoot that wedding. This will definitely improve your portfolio and you always what to improve your portfolio by removing the weakest photos to stronger images as you grow. You also have to consider the day of the week for pricing Friday through Sundays is premium days most want those days but other weekdays could be priced cheaper for clients who have less money. The same goes for certain months That where you could offer lower pricing to clients because its the slow time of the year. There is a lot more to figure out pricing but 150 weddings a year (3 weddings a week) is crazy and I think unattainable when there are only 52 weeks in a year!
