In the traditions of the Newar community, a fascinating ritual called “Gufa”, where the young girls are kept in a room, shielded from the sun's rays and the presence of males for 12 days prior to their menstruation. At that time, “Khyaak” - mythical humanoid creatures in Newari folklore, were kept inside the Gufa room and the place needed to be pure and clean. This tradition is rooted in the belief that this time of isolation presents a profound purification upon these daughters, reaffirming their path toward womanhood. In this community, these young souls are blessed with the rituals of 'Bel Bibaha’ (Ihi) and 'Surya Narayan Bibaha’ (Gufa) before their transformative journey.
