When I expressed my desire to hear the weeb lore after you suggested the subject, I didn't expect it to be so comprehensive. This really is a video to watch again. It is inspiring that what may seem mundane is actually interesting as the movements of a families progress. I've put off commenting since I finished the video, unsure how to expressed the generosity I felt from you all in sharing these moments of your journey. Thank you
Now you know why we had to kick the can down the road! We knew we had a lot to unpack and it took us some time to get it all straight. Thank you so much for watching!
I think this video really cements it -- you guys could talk about any topic for any length of time and, yes, we are SO ENTERTAINED! Really tho, I had to watch across many, many mini sessions, but it was a joy turning this video on every time -- I loved hearing about your all's experience and how it overlaps and differs from my own 😊 Really cool of you guys to take the time to put this together and share :) Especially when you guys got to the first 2ks manga boom -- that was time for my nostalgia to shine lol I may have been born in the 90s, but lucky for me, I'm #5 of 7 kids, and most of my older siblings (and their friends) were super into "nerd culture" stuff, which kinda like you guys led directly to the Japan/manga/anime pipeline, so I got exposed pretty early on. I *distinctly* remember the Naruto dub in particular coming out because before then, I had been watching episodes over my sister's shoulder as she downloaded them via... seafaring means on the computer (early BT, who knows what you'd end up with 😅), and I was super excited to see it on the actual TV, only to be totally taken aback when it started up and everyone was speaking English! 😂 I immediately turned it off, and that was when my "sub snob" era truly began 😎(don't come at me, I couldn't care less which way people enjoy their anime nowadays!) I just want to say that I really appreciate how real you guys got in the section about the Great Recession; my parents wove in and out of various jobs and financial situations growing up, and it's such a messed up system that doesn't offer aid to those in need when they need it, making them jump through all of these hoops, dangling the offer of aid then immediately recinding it at the smallest *sniff* of money coming in, especially when children are involved. I think it's just something that people can't really fathom how f-- the system is until being affected by it personally. Thanks for sharing your experience, and yeah, nothing wrong with asking for some help! Anyway, I hope you guys had as fun a time walking down memory line as it was to listen to you partake in the journey! It'll be interesting to see who that special guest is for the tour... 🤔 (PS TIL that it must also be the Arkansas/Indiana, etc regional accent's tendency to pronounce "draw/drawing" as "drawl/drawling" 😆 I've had that particular pronuncation pointed out to me so much after moving away from TN/NC Appalachian region where I grew up that it's become something I'm hyper aware of in my own speech. Glad to hear some fellow "drawl" speakers!)
Thanks so much for this comment!! Yeah, talking about the Great Recession was tough, and we had a lot of conversations behind the scenes on how much we wanted to share. It was truly the lowest point for our family, which almost caused it to break up. Thankfully we survived and bounced back stronger than ever! Imma keep it a buck fifty with you, recording this video was rough! A few times we go short with each other, and we had to take a break to get the chemistry back.
@@meettheweebfamily I can imagine, even discussing family stuff within the family can get pretty heated, so putting it out there like this can't have been easy. The experiences you guys shared really resonated tho, and for what it's worth, whatever tension was behind the scenes didn't really come across on the viewer side. Hopefully not too many blue cards were thrown in the making of this video, and good thing Andy's got that impeccable pee-timing to let you all take a well deserved break in the middle! 😆
We have so much in common it’s CRAZY!! I’m a PK(preacher’s kid) too!! My dad was a Navy Chaplain so I’ve lived on base too. I was ALL ABOUT the TMNT!! 😋 I remember having this green handheld Turtles game! It was the coolest! I had a few of the action figures too.
Prepping and filming this video must not have been easy, but I think it was worth it! The combination of life events/milestones along with various tie-ins to comics, manga, anime, games, etc. was really entertaining and deep at times as well. Btw, talking about Naruto's US debut reminded me that at school, people suddenly started getting those headbands and wearing them around lol.
@@meettheweebfamily LOL 😂 Now that I’m thinking about it more, I feel like that was the first time that I can remember that anime “merch” was something you’d see so many people wear publicly. (Not counting things like Pokemon that are games AND also had an anime, and where some people in the American audience maybe barely knew it originated from Japan lol.) I could be wrong, but that’s what my memory is telling me right now at least haha.
Something I’ve been worried about is dating and also keeping up with my collection as well as thinking long term about it. I really appreciate hearing from long term collectors and to see that it is popular
As a person born in 1987, I could relate to almost all of this and had a blast going on the time capsule journey throughout this entire video. Fun bit @ a serious thing, I was in my 8th grade history class during 9/11, and one of the students said “thank god the Statue of Liberty is safe”
I have kinda the same history of shows as you do im 3 years younger than dad weeb but as an immigrant kid i also have memories of my dad stealing satellite signal from Mexico and they played anime on regular tv so i got to watch Ranma 1/2 and sailor moon while my brothers watched dragon ball and super champions (captain tsubasa) dubbed in Spanish and less censored.
That is hilarious cause that’s the first X Men comic I bought 😂. I also remember watching the XMen premiere on a Friday night. They also launched Batman the animated series on an evening. I think it was there way to launch the Fox Kid segment of cartoons
Took me a couple days, but finally watched the whole thing ! My parents have always supported my interests, but have never shared them. It’s sick listening to you both talk about your nerdy interests and deep rooted love for manga/anime. btw, how are you feeling about the new Turtles movie ?
When you mentioned wrestlers I immediately thought of Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks. Showing my nationality (which does exist!). Oh, why no mention of Transformers? (that's my cassette taping, along with Winne the Pooh.)
Of course you guys exist! Where else did the British Bulldog come from? Transformers was never really a big part of my nerd culture. I had like one of the toys, and I watched the show a little. It just never really stuck with me that much. The Michael Bay films didn't help either....
@@meettheweebfamily like my star wars figures and action man, I still have all the Transformers. I wouldn't entertainment even the idea of watching the new movies. You believed the wrestling was real then like I did, in fact I couldn't say now how much was or wasn't real. It wasn't like the concept of acting ever crossed my mind.
Wrestling is such a unique medium from that standpoint! The fictional characters exist in the same world as us, and they age with us in real time! Also, some real things make it into the kayfabe. The most famous example is how the Curtain Call made it into a shoot interview where Triple H said he was the game.
Great video. Thank you for opening up so much. Really enjoyed the lore. Any chance you can link the manga crash video? I’ve tried searching and couldn’t find anything. Manga Crash is another users name, so the results are littered with his videos. Also, are you going to the WWE Fastlane event in Indy? I’ve been debating if I want the hassle or going haha.
Also, no, I'm not going to the WWE event. I don't really keep current with wrestling. That said, my company has a box at Banker's Life Field House (or whatever it's called now), and they offer WWE tickets all the time.
@@meettheweebfamilythanks for the link. I’m always in and out with the current stuff. I always debate taking my daughter, but we always have just as much fun at the small time local events with 30 people in the crowd.
@@meettheweebfamily I will add, I totally remember that time, and like you said One Piece was not that big. I remember cardboard stands for Naruto manga and people being into Bleach. One Piece was just one of those random titles they were promoting at the end of books. I don’t recall anyone talking about it. I gave it a try back then and never got into it. And have tried a few more times and always end up dropping it.
Man, you need to watch T1! It's excellent. I've watched T2 more than I can count. I first watched it around 7 or 8 years old and would cry at the ending with the thumbs up 😂
