Well, I'm a weeb after all. As a British person, I can confirm your interpretation is accurate I suppose. Many people ive talked to say it out right they are a week and make fun of themselves. But when it comes to actually talking about anime we are very passionate and like to point out details in animes. Filipino weeb here, and the portrayal of Filipino weebs in the video is so accurate. I'd say, I'm proud that I grew up in a generation where animes were a part of our primetime viewing habit, especially in the 90s. They're so popular that they usually beat the local dramas produced by their rivals. 😅 BTW, the "Boku no Pi-" thing is totally accurate. If someone recommends Boku no Pi- to an anime first-timer, most probably, they are Filipinos.

Hello, an Indonesian here. Naruto, Dragon Ball, Doraemon, and many more are basically the animes of our childhood, especially for the 90s - 2004 kids. They were broadcoasted in our television. A lot of us had our share of fond memories memorizing jutsus, characters, and even some ninja roleplaying. Glad to see our people mentioned here.

As a Swedish person whoh has been to Japan alot due to my sister studying/living there, I agree, there are a surprising amount of similarities between Swedish (also scandinavians in general) and Japanese people ( In my experience at-least). I have a crazy and probably false theory, that it stems from both cultures being rooted in a warrior and honorbound culture, vikings and samurai respectively. Although it probably has more to do with standard of living or pure coincide...

As a German I can say that this is so fricking accurate. Me and my classmates always say stupid stuff for fun in japanese, it's funny how fast we can switch from silly to *serious serious*.

As an older German weeb I felt pretty well represented. I'm normally quite serious if it's about doing something or fullfilling a task. But in my freetime and with the right people I can go plus ultra weeb (including acting like an idiot and making a fool out of myself). So I think you did a pretty good job with your observations. Regarding acceptance of anime I have to say that it changed a lot in the last 15 - 20 years. As a fan of manga/anime in the late 90s, early 2000s it wasn't that easy. It was hard to get animes and games and they were expensive af. There were only some shown in the middle of the night on smaller TV channels. And they were mostly aduld oriented. So for most people "Animes" were those strange foreign animated movies full of s*x and violence. All that shifted with time and by now the weeb culture is pretty much accepted and normal here in Germany.

I'm a Chinese and I can confirm that weebs in Chinese are mostly genius. It is very famous in China that the genius' school USTC which only 0.0001% people can get in has many otakus. It is said the more clever you are , the higher possibility you have to become a weeb in China

A very accurate represrentation of the Swedish weeb! When you said Swedish weebs are very similar to Japanese people, that is something I've felt. When learning about Japanese culture, I often learned it through American channels where they explained Japanese culture as something very different, but often times hit very close to home, so I was quite confused in the beginning. That Indonesian weeb actually represent at least more than 30% of Indonesians who lived in Japan. We like to introduce our tradition and legacy, mostly foods and we're extremely proud of it 😁 it's not weird at all getting foods recommendations from us from the first day we met strangers 😂👍

Korean-American here, and the Korean weeb part about liking obscure anime also applies to American weebs, too. A good example is Battle Angel Alita/GUNNM/Ganmu/銃夢. I've never met anyone in Japan who has read the manga.

As a Swedish person myself ( not a weeb ), I always thought Japanese social-culture was strangely similar to what we have here.

I'm full Filipino, but I actually got a couple of half-Japanese cousins and I did learn Filipinos are one of the biggest foreign populations in Japan so it's kinda fun seeing you mention seeing the Filipino weebs the most and noticing them having Japanese-esque mannerisms, haha.

As a swedish weeb id say its true with us liking old anime. Start talking about 90s and early 2000s anime and we will light up. Also everyone seems to know atleast one lesser known historic japanease event. Also we are interested in most old stuff from japan, like kimonos, architecture, art ,music and theater. I'd love myself to go to those old japanease theaters someday. Edit: Also yes, we stand some distance away from most. We dont wanna get into others peoples personal spaces uninvited and want to be able to have our own. I think that alot of us swedes feel like Swedish and Japanease cultures have some things in common and that also makes everything from japan seem a bit more approachable

I'm from France and it's 100% accepted. From what the americans would call "nerd" to "jock", everyone watch anime. Is not seen in a bad light. Anime like One Piece and other, it's so well knows in France that everyone, even those who doesnt watch anime, know. It's not small or niche in France. That like saying, "yeah I like action movies" or something like that. Also, for your information, Anime was the youth of my father (hes 50). My father legit had all the tomes (so I read them. Several times), also anime like Albator, and the such in DVD. Just to give you an exemple; That not something that got popular trough the internet, like in the US. Also, anime convention and the such are more like for family instead of "weeb" only. Most of the times, in France, people thats likes animes will be interested and dive deeper into the Japanese culture. You dont even know how many Japan Crazy (Fou du Japon; In French, this has a good sense) there is. Those you see are just a fraction of it. In my highschool, there was a petition to hire a Japanese Teacher to teach Japanese as a third language. I could talk hours about it. Also. If you know how to draw manga style (memories from when I was in Junior High and High School) it's make you someones cool. Even very shy peoples who draws during break in the courtyard had like 5 to 10 peoples watching them draw. Some of them were extremly popular among the other students.

Watching anime has been a common thing in Indonesia lately, and showing signs of weebness and loving anime is considered usual and some even considered it cool

As Filipino this is really accurate in our community and I do tend to copy alot of Japanese phrases like my favorite "Eeeeeeeeeee!" And of course we are generally open to our weeb side atleast this generation.

As a french person, we have a large manga and anime presence in the country. A few anime and manga are actually from France. If I remember the statistics correctly, France is (or was?) right behind Japan (okay, far behind, but still) when it comes to manga production! Hell, for a while, the government gave every kid around the age of 18 a 200€ voucher to spend on cultural “products” on a government website. They actually included a LOT of anime and manga, so of course most people I heard about bought a shit ton of manga lmao

As a Swedish person who enjoys anime, manga, as well as some other Japanese things, I have been asked if I’m Asian, in a situation where my likes were never mentioned. However, I think the whole old anime thing is because of watching Spirited Away, and Howl’s Moving Castle, and things like that as part of our education (in my personal experience) as part of our art classes, which was my first experience with anime outside of Pokémon. Then again, my teacher might just have been a Weeb, himself.

French weeb here. Just to say that if we tend to be good at japanese is due to the huge proximity between japanese and french. Also, we have a polite form, even though it's not as nuanced as keigo, we actually are aware to some extent on the importance of being polite. And finally, in France nowadays anime and manga has become so mainstream that watching animi isn't considered cringe anymore, it's the kind of anime you watch which will determine if you are cringe or not. Typically, whatever Tokyo girl or something is would be considered cringe by french standard (and harem-h*ntai-sis/brocon would get you the degenerate treatment) Edit: it's so accepted it's to the point where when i say i listen to JOJO's opening to a friend i made at school it doesn't tick for him that i watch anime, but when i say i'm a big weeb then he asks me what anime i watch xD

I remember the only thing i talked about back in elementary and middle school was dragon ball, perhaps because it was the only "japanese" tv show i knew along city hunter and cat's eyes, i vividly remember saving up my lunch money so i could buy the physical volumes and flex it among my classmates lol ! I guess most of us got really into the japanese culture and history through anime because afterwards most of us took japanese as a second language ( or foreign language ). I'd say ultimately being a weeb/otaku is not considered cringe or anything in France nowadays because of how mainstream it has become, although if you brag about watching hentai or anything that has excessive fan service you'll have a hard time socializing lol.

I was wondering how you would depict the German weeb. As soon as you yelled, I knew: yup, that's us lol. You did manage to sum up my kinda humor and overall personality though. Doing and saying very exaggerated things when goofing around but if it gets serious I (and many other Germans) just flip the switch and all kinds of humor are banished out of our faces.

Chinese weeb here, Of course we love anime very much, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Crayon Shin-chan, Slam Dunk, these animations accompanied our childhood, but people don’t often take the initiative to discuss it when they grow up, but they all remember it in their hearts because it was when they were young a part of.

I'm from the UK and been inspired by Japanese style animation since the mid 80's. The creators where so creative that covered alot of subjects in society. Alot of people I've spoken to would deem me weird because it was the idea of japan over the idea of a story that was animated. When I started speaking to japanese people they told me it was weird that I was interested in gaming and media from Japan. Though sadly they didn't know the creativity of the likes of Sony, nintendo and sega or knew any famous composers or directors work that was inspiring the world. So in the end it was a negative approach from all just because of a media. Though the same worldwide people wouldn't of got said If I.e was expressing art or music from a Disney movie with art/music Now I feel that the approach to term anime has been more acceptable and adaptive in western culture. That now there is more comic cons In western countries and dub translations that sell well than the days of just having it japanese

History is super interesting and I don't even follow the new anime any more because I keep negatively comparing them to the old ones. What a bore! Small talk is uncomfortable, and being in people's face is unnatural unless you're close to them. That said, once a good conversation gets started things get really deep very quickly and can go on for hours. Usually over "fika".

Living in japan i can relate. We have a similar view of manners but in France there's been a sort of "falling down" where people just generally stop caring. However, in japan, the pressure to follow rules makes our manners come back with a vengeance and so we quickly pick up on manners and rules. For some reason it feels good, like everything you've been taught haven't gone to waste.

I can see that many people, including myself, enjoyed this video. At least, for the time I grew up in America, being seen as a weeb was seen as really cringy, but now anime is so mainstream that it doesn’t matter for the most part. Still, this video makes me feel really validated that I can be accepted as who I am to Japanese people, or at the very least, accepted by Sora. Thank you for embracing us weebs around the world! :’)

Filipino weeb here. I got introduced to anime in 1992 with Cedie the little prince (Little Lord Fauntleroy), followed by more classics like princess Sarah, Mary and the secret garden, Heidi, Romeo's blue skies (where I got depressed the most), dog of Flanders, Peter pan no bouken (my absolute favorite - I even pretended to be sick so I won't go to school and watch this show instead lol). It has progressed to watching Dragon ball Z, BTX, Sailormoon, Flame of Recca, Zenki, Time Quest, Blink, Mojacko, Doraemon, Saber Marionette, Ghost Fighter, Naruto, Slayers, Hell Sensei Nube and Magic Knight Rayerarth! I can say that most kids in the Philippines 90's watched anime and in my personal opinion, the greatest export by Japan to the Philippines. Now that I'm 37, I can say that there would be no stopping in loving anime any time soon.. I even bought Figma toys for my beloved Attack on Titan characters lol. If I get to have the budget again, then Kimetsu no Yaiba toys next :P

Yes French weeb (we prefer Otaku - weeb is a word used by Americans) are like you described it, I have around 200 anime that I would like to talk about. Even though when I am in Japan I prefer talking about Japanese history, language, culture :). Also being an otaku is not seen as cringe in France and watching anime became a common thing since a lot of them became accessible through legal streaming platforms.

I'm a weeb from Russia. Japanese culture and anime in particular are quite popular here. Though it is considered kind of cringe to be a weeb openly, there are still quite a few of us here. Personally I wouldn't randomly start talking about anime to a person unless I knew (or wanted to know if-) they were also a weeb.

The idea that American weebs are thought of as polite boggles my mind. I say this as an American. I thought we were all seen as rude and loud in other countries. And oddly enough, like you said, I’m determined to be as polite and respectful as I can when I go to Japan so I’m not one of the bad ones.

As a Swedish person, this depiction of a Swede is 100% spot-on. Avoiding small-talk is such a typical Swedish quirk. xD In my experience with anime/manga, it's not something people would talk a lot about in public. Especially if the particular series was not mainstream. And many people were uncomfortable sharing the hobby because it was pretty common for some of the anime/manga to be distributed with lewd/provocative cover images (Love Hina comes to mind). But as mentioned before, Swedes don't really do small-talk all that much. So while Pokemon was popular, the fans were more likely to LARP or play Pokemon than they were to actually just talk about it.

When you talked about the "german weeboo" it remind me a german youtuber "Nino Kerl" that met with Hiro Mashima sensei, his catch phrase is "the anime is going to save the world" and he likes cute idol type animes, Hiro Mashima added him as character in his manga "Edens Zero" bc he liked his personality.

Bangladeshi viewer; I'm old now, so out of touch with the young generation, but back in my day, watching anime put you into one of two categories: Childish person who still watched cartoons as a 'grown-up'/teen OR man/woman of culture who knew how cool anime and Japan was. Even more exclusive was the manga club, which you only got into if you were rich or tech-savvy (scanlations). Afaik, however, there is another contingent of Japan fans in Bangladesh, whose connection is not through anime, but through Japanese cultural and philanthropic programmes. They want to go to Japan because it's seen as a wonderland of polite, hard-working people with impeccable manners and wonderful food (and beautiful women/handsome men).

I live from the Philippines. There are hundreds of anime aired on tv from the 80s to around mid 2010s, not so much nowadays sadly. Airing anime are still common but they only air old shhows and recycling them, before they kept pumping up newer shows especially in the 90s to mid 2000s Almost all people I know already watch an anime or have read a manga. Even our parents that are 60 years old below. Korean culture is taking over the Philippines as of right now. There are more kdramas getting aired on tv more than anime, its different before. And k pop is taking over our country. And some korean cuisine is like a common food for us. I still love japan tho

I am from Finland! Don't hear people discuss anime that much, although I have seen tons of people have anime stickers on their laptops. My hunch is that people from cities are more accepting than people from like more rural areas since it is easier to meet people who watch anime in big cities.
