I agree 100%. I thought I was doing a great thing to install fabric in my landscape beds. Although water can go through the fabric, it beads up and runs off long before it permeates. I have also seen that it is quickly exposed by rain, wind, squirrels, deer etc. This is true even more so on any terrain with a slope. Immediately after installing a pretty thick layer of mulch, I had exposed pieces that need to constantly be touched up. Thanks for the info. You verified what I suspected, that it was bad idea to install fabric in landscape beds. I have also had a fungus problem in those beds.

Thanks John for the info here. We moved into a house a few years ago and the landscaping was jaw dropping beautiful for the first couple of years. It started declining and I found it difficult to enrich the soil with the fabric in place. Maybe it was the fabric itself hindering the soil and I did not think of that. We have lost a lot of attractive and expensive plants over the last year. The only plants that really had no issues were the LANTANAS and I think that was your mystery plant in this video!

Thank you so much for this video. It came at the perfect time. We had a beautiful garden bed put in about three years ago. It’s a long bed which is next to our neighbor’s property. The landscaper put in a good quality weed barrier with mulch on top. However, this did not block weeds coming through and under the fabric. As the mulch began decomposing, we began to get even more weeds on top of the mulch. It makes weeding extremely difficult. I would never again opt for weed barrier in a garden with plants. I am actually in the process of getting some help to remove it and put in a new layer of mulch. Thank you for your straightforward information.
@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 2 года назад
You are most welcome! 💚Sorry we didn't get this video out before your landscaper spent all that time putting in the landscape fabric. Definitely something that is harder to take out than it is to put in - smart choice to opt out of using it in the future! Once removed, healthy/lively soil and a 1-2" layer of mulch are the best (and organic) ways to control weeds.

Thanks John We have different soil in Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada) we have very deep rooted weeds which are very aggressive, here all my neighbors have to use landscape fabric(even we don’t want it) Do you recommend to use more mulch? Or any other alternative
@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 2 года назад
Mani, You are correct, Winnipeg has mostly very deep soil, which can facilitate deeply rooted weeds. We've done a few videos that explain the weed controlling possibilities of building fungally dominated soil with complex microbial life. It's amazing but true that truly healthy soil has fewer weed pressures than lifeless or bacterially dominated soil. In addition to healthy soil, diligence and mulch are effective components of an organic weed abatement strategy. Weed fabric creates lots of problems in terms of building really healthy soil as per our video. Thank you for the comment, we appreciate your interest! - J&B's

@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 2 года назад
Yes, in your situation you can benefit from the weed fabric, but omit it completely from the root zones of your trees (all the way to edges of the tree canopy). Use our Blend topically in your tree root zones and mulch about 1-2" thick over the Blend.
@JGD185
@JGD185 Год назад
I was thinking of using landscape fabric but not sure after watching this video. I wanted to use it in a plant bed in front of my house because I have a weed problem. What do you recommend instead for dealing with weeds?
@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs Год назад
Regular mulching about 2" thick is a great weed deterrent. Disciplined and regular weed patrol in conjunction with mulching provides about 3/4 of the most effective non-chemical weed control mechanisms. Surprisingly, the other quarter is soil health - soil with abundant complex soil life has much fewer weed pressures than low life or simple bacteria dominated soil. If you aren't opposed to using weed control chemicals, the most impactful and least damaging to soil are properly timed pre-emergent herbicides like granular Dimension. They aren't good for soil so you should try to limit their use, but they are very effective at killing weed seeds just before or just as they are germinating. My opinion of weed barrier fabric is it should only be used in non-plant areas. Hope this helps! -John
@infiniteadam7352
@infiniteadam7352 2 года назад

@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 2 года назад
Surprisingly, healthy/lively soil plays an important role in weed control along with a 1-2" layer of mulch. Check out our previous video on weed control here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tg32nWbqOGk.html If weeds are chronic and overwhelming a granular pre-emergent like Dimension can be used, but we prefer to first attempt control without pre-emergent herbicides.

Thanks so much for the very clear and instructive video. Although I realize that landscaping, gardening and farming are different things, I've pretty much deduced from this video that attempting to use weed barrier fabric in our tea fields would not be a good idea. In our particular area of Taiwan, high temperatures and humidity along with extended seasonal rainfall (usually then followed by summer drought), make battling weeds a constant problem. For health and safety reasons, herbicides are not an option. Also, tea is particular in that many factors may affect the quality and flavor of its finished product. The combined area of our two small fields is only 3/4 acre, relatively small as tea fields go, but more than enough for one "upper middle-aged" couple to maintain. Presently, we do our weeding with either weed eaters or hoes. Again, I realize you are a landscaper and not a farmer, but do you have any advice on weed management for our situation?
@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 23 дня назад
We are glad you found the video helpful! You could try to find an organic herbicide. Our other recommendation for weed suppression is using mulch, but I'm not sure that would work in your situation. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Best of luck! :)

@@JohnandBobs "Gracias por todo" as they're likely to say in the landscaping market there these days. I really do appreciate your kind response. You well exceeded expectations just in responding at all, especially for a two-year-old video. I will take your advice and re-investigate the herbicide option. I re-injured my back recently hauling around bags of fertilizer, and thus haven't been active in the fields lately. Right now, parts of my fields look like the Amazon, so I'm anxious to find a less labor-intensive approach than spending two full days battling with a "weed-eater" only to have it all come back 2 or 3 days later. Yeah, I considered mulch, but I'm afraid you're right -- it's not too practical for our situation. No worries. Life is good and I really do appreciate your kindness in taking the time to try to help me. Blessings to you and yours, and I hope things go smoothly for you.

We built a new home and the area we live in gets extremely windy at times. I believe if we were to use mulch that it would blow all over the place and disappear rather quickly. Therefore, I was leaning towards using landscape fabric underneath approximately 3” of decorative rock in conjunction with an abundance of trees and plants. Your comment about the weed fabric clogging up rather quickly has me concerned…particularly so being in a windy area. I would appreciate any advice you could give for my situation. Thanks
@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 3 месяца назад
I suggest you use the rock (no more than 2") without the weed barrier in all areas you have planting. Also there are some types of coarser wood based mulch that work good in windy areas because they knit together and stay put. These types of mulches can even withstand the blowers of gardeners who sometimes choose to blow leaves in mulched areas.
@chipdouglas1079
@chipdouglas1079 3 месяца назад
@@JohnandBobs Thank you for the suggestions. I can’t be certain, but I don’t believe the large supplier near me carries the coarse wood based mulch-I’ll have to look more into that. Do you have any opinion on mulch glue? In terms of using no more than 2” of rock without fabric, I have a couple of concerns and would appreciate your input: 1) much of the research I have done says that overtime, the rock will sink/disappear into the ground using such a shallow depth-in particular, without the fabric. 2) I worry about weed maintenance-not being able to penetrate the rock with tools and the shallower depth allowing weeds to penetrate more easily. I’m hoping to avoid using sprayed chemicals. I am open to using something like Preen once or twice a year. There is just some much conflicting advice out there and I feel like my head is spinning. Any further advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again
@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 2 месяца назад
I have never used mulch glue, but I have had success with using mulches that stay put. See what is available in your area. It might be helpful for you to get a sample of the rock you want to use and put down a 2" layer and a small 3" layer. 2" is a lot and I've never had trouble with it sinking in planting beds -- in a road being driven over that would be a problem. Weeds aren't non-existent with rock, but much less prevalent. You could used a vinegar based weed killer or citrus peel organic one like Avenger in order to avoid chemical weed killers. I'd start without using Preen or a pre-emergent and see if you even have a weed problem. Rock mulch is a pretty effective anti-weed treatment.

I believe you're asking if you choose to use weed fabric, at what grade or level is it properly installed? You would install it right before your mulch, meaning you install all plants/amenities and establish your final finish grade. Then, apply the weed fabric and if preferred a mulch right over the fabric, although you also could omit the mulch and then the fabric would be completely visible and walkable.
