Do you know the name of a thistle that when it has not flowered yet has needles on it that are almost an inch long? Very sharp! I had to dig it up and it had a root that was about 6-7 inches deep. A real monster. I am in So Cal.
So Cal thistles..hmm. Since we're in the midwest some similar thistles to what we have would be Italian thistles that have longer spines near the flower heads. Yellow star thistles have long spines but are associated with flowers. It's tough without a photo. Good luck!
