( I'm currently on week 15): It's week thirteen and I called my favorite aunt on Mother's Day, and said, "Happy Mother's Day!" I am super close with Aunt Jamie and we talk frequently, probably more than most people talk to their moms. Her response to my excited Mother's Day greet was, "Who's this?" It was that moment that I realized my voice had dropped over the last couple of weeks, most dramatically over the last five days.
This video includes updates on physical changes: my voice deepening, changes in my hair texture, facial hair growth, and the good and bad with skin. Most importantly, I discuss social issues I've experienced while publicly medically transitioning. This includes brief examples of a wide range experiences I have had - feeling empowered, embarrassed, supported, and objectified in the way people talk about my body to me and to each other.
First of all, thank you to everyone for all of your support. It means a great deal to me. The message I want to spread in this video is pretty simple; whether we are cisgender (born in the gender you present as), transgender, or gender variant, it is so incredibly important that we do not push our experience(s) or lack or experience on other trans people. Taking tesosterone is not a timeline, not everyone will experience the same thing (and that is why there aren't timelines available). It doesn't feel good to be told what is going to happen to us when we don't ask for advice. Do any other trans people feel like, you've opened yourself up to objectification by even talking about transitioning? It seems like there have been people who forget that they're talking about our bodies because our bodies are in transition. I encourage everyone who has people medically transitioning in their lives to ask nonleading questions, something like, "How is your transition?" Many of us want to talk about it, but we don't want to be owned in any way, and we need the conversation to remain positive. With that, every trans person is different and wants to be talked to differently.
For the next few weeks, I will be focusing on growing my beard!
