Luna and Titan’s puppies are now 5 weeks old!
My name is Rachelle, thanks for checking out Dancing Sky Lab’s 5 week pupdate.
It seemed like overnight, the puppies went from starting to look like and act like puppies, to full on puppy mode. The ears are flopping, the teeth are chewing on just about everything and puppy food is being consumed twice a day now!
We began the process of crate training last week when we moved the puppies into their new living space. A crate is set up with some comfortable bedding, a couple chew toys and the door is left open for them to come and go as they please. We let them choose to go in and sleep on their own and do not force it. Because dogs are denning animals, the puppies quickly enter their new sleeping space and the snores ensue.
As part of our socialization practices, we encourage the puppies to explore different textures, objects and sounds. They are in the fear period right now, so we do not force anything, but let them discover things on their own time and realize it isn’t scary. We are laying connections in their brains of positive associations to new things, so they will have less reactivity as an adult to new things and situations.
Also this week, the puppies got their first bath! All that puppy mush, learning where to potty and playing in the mud made for some dirty puppies. They all enjoyed their peanut butter treat as they were bathed!
