Week 68: Shakira Week 2! #5 - La Tortura ft. Alejandro Sanz 

La Tortura/The Torture, was the first all spanish language video to air on mtv without subtitles. May not seem like much now, but back then, it was a huge deal. Back when mtv was still good. 🤘

In the sequences that Shakira is with Alejandro, they are memories of the relationship they had, the black liquid (or oil) refers to how toxic the relationship was.

The song tells a story, and Shakira added some details. Basically, the guy is scumbag. He is Shakira's ex (of the character she plays), an unfaithful person who wants to get back together with her, repentant, according to what he says. He ends up living across from her. There is a verse that defines it "You have my love from Monday to Friday But it's best if you leave Saturday to me" translated into I'll be faithful to you from Monday to Friday, Saturday I take it off (to be faithful). Shakira rejects him, saying that asking him to change is asking for the impossible, that it's best for each one to follow different paths, that she's had enough. la tortura (the torture) is a song like the video is: the guy wanted a loose relationship cheating and shakira wanted a serious boyfriend. the spanish song pretty much tells what you see on the video. for example is a torture for alejandro sanz (witch is HUGE on latin america, like shakira but he refuses to sing on english thats why shakira never made a english version of the song even that there is an alternate version on an album with her parts redone and translated while his side (alejandro side) remains the same. alejandro suffers wanting shakira to be with him again, and shakira is tortured by the nice memories of both banging 12 hours a day then working. then he cheated on her. relationship finished.
