What's a typical week of clinics like for a doctor? Let's compare how many hours I work in a week of clinics compared to a week in hospital!
📽️ Week in hospital: • A WEEK AS A DOCTOR: Ho...
I'm currently on an outpatient clinic rotation in my internal medicine residency. Each day I work with a different specialist in the morning and afternoon - it's a great learning experience and it will help me decide what area I want to specialize in!
MY SCHEDULE:
* Monday AM - Hepatology (liver specialist)
* Monday PM - Gastroenterology (gut specialist)
* Tuesday AM - Cardiology (heart specialist)
* Tuesday PM - Endocrinology (hormone specialist)
* Wednesday AM - Rheumatology (inflammation/arthritis specialist)
* Wednesday PM - Academic Half Day (lectures for residents)
* Thursday AM - Hematology (blood specialist)
* Thursday PM - Nephrology (kidney specialist)
* Thursday NIGHT - on call in hospital
SUBSCRIBE to see more video like this!
COMMENT below to let me know what you think or just to say hi!
😍 P.S. My new obsession is Bitmjoi... can you tell?!

I've been binge watching your videos. They are very informative. I now understand what a doctor does in a day and maybe why they might take some time before they are able to attend to you especially in hospital.

Hi Doc!! Im an aspiring physician university student here and I definitely consider medicine to be my calling. I wanted to ask you how do you suggest about shadowing physicians in Canada? I have tried to reach out but all I have heard back is that there are serious laws regarding patient confidentiality in Canada which means that the isn't a thriving culture of non medical students that shadow physicians as compared to the States. Thank you and I absolutely love the fact that you are soo patient orientated and compassionate!

I’ve just started to watch you videos and been watched some videos today. I wish this was still around when Papa Moises my grandfather was alive. I learned a lot by being a child who translated for him at the hospital and in the emergency department. I wouldn’t be able to do what you do because I can’t really deal with so much blood. My grandparents have been in and out of the hospital since I was little, I’ve administered needles of blood thinners and gone through medical histories. I admire what you do.

Hi Siobhan! I’m a new subscriber and I️ absolutely love your channel! I’ve seen that most of the people who watch are med students and I’m probably the opposite of that. I️ have a chronic autoimmune disease, ulcerative colitis (it was on one of the posters in your first office). I’ve spent countless hours in doctor’s offices and have been hospitalized too many times to count. I️ had my colon removed in 2015 and lived with a temporary ileostomy for over a year. I️ know what a hospital is like through the perspective of a patient, but I️ really like seeing it through the eyes of a doctor! It can can get incredibly frustrating having to sit in waiting rooms, wait on doctor’s to come in & talk to you or change certain meds, or wonder when you’re going to get discharged. I️ always try my best to be empathetic to the nurses and doctors, because I️ know I’m not the the only person they are taking care of. Your videos offer so much insight! You seem like such a kind hearted, positive, and knowledgeable person. I’m sure the patients love you

Cardiology clinic: “saw some young patients with genetic changes,” YES! I have Long QT Syndrome and I am one of those young cardiology patients with an inherited arrhythmia. Thank you for saying this, people assume those living with heart disease/heart conditions are older, males, or have pre-existing medical conditions. I’m an 18 year old female, athlete and sciences student living with a heart condition, not what most people consider to be the typical cardiology patient. Thank you for shedding a brief moment of light on this 🙌🏼

Siobhan, I really liked hearing about your rheumatology clinic. My mom has R.A. and I was diagnosed with Lupus at 16. I'm 43 now and Lupus has not been kind to me. I've been on all the "fun" drugs, i.e. Prednisone, methotrexate, cytoxan, and currently doing CellCept again. I haven't been completely off prednisone since my first bout of pericarditis at age 16. I have taken plaquenil since then also. Throughout the years I've been on a host of NSAID's. Prednisone has not been kind to me resulting in avascular necrosis, obesity, steroid induced diabetes, and all that joy. Cytoxan made me infertile at 28 (IV doses), but we adopted and couldn't be happier! I'm saying all this bc it was cool to see you doing a clinic and hear you mention Lupus. Have you ever considered becoming a rheumatologist? I have been seeing the same one since I was first diagnosed. She had 1 small daughter when I first met her. Now her youngest kids, twin boys, are in college. The "small" daughter is all grown up and married, and her next youngest daughter is out of school and working. Meanwhile I'm now the mom with an almost teenager on my hands. It's amazing the relationship you develop when you have the same doctor for so long. We keep it professional, but we have a true love for one another. That might not be what you want out of being a doctor. But I guess that is part of residency, figuring out more of what you want, and as you put it, "shaping your future." Your vlogs are great! I've subscribed and have been watching your past vlogs and catching up. Good luck! -Diane in Tampa, FL
@ViolinMD
@ViolinMD 6 лет назад
Hi Diane - thank you so so much for sharing your story! Yes in fact I am very seriously considering rheumatology as a career, and part of the reason is being able to develop relationships, such as the one you describe, with patients over time. When I referred to "cool drugs" I was thinking about some of the biologics and how they can transform the course of an illness. I certainly agree and acknowledge that each of these medications can have quite serious side effects!! Again, thank you so much for sharing and I'm very happy to have you watching and apart of this community!

@Violin MD, I have a question. As a doctor, I can see that the work you do is quite demanding. Running around in an emergency, you have to have clear mind to think through possibilities quickly, you have to be calm under pressure and also be able to handle a lot of responsibilities. So, are medical students and doctors are just healthier in general than most populations? For example, I have brain fog frequently and tend be slow. I also have anxiety so cannot react well to intense situations. Is there a specialty in medicine for everyone? I am literally the opposite of who you are: bubbly, energetic and compassionate. I am more cold, calculating, anxious and prefer to not deal with people that much. I was in medical school when I was 18, but left voluntarily because I just felt not being able to handle any of that. I think it is a right decision. I now make computers bend to my will but always second guess my choice. I feel like I would be extremely good in medical research instead of working on people. I read a lot on medicine despite it not being my profession.I have some kind of draw back to this field but I am the kind of person who would be running experimental treatments and running clinical trials because this is what I am interested in. I have also met unconventional doctors who managed to find what was causing my problems, looked at me as a whole system instead of being deconstructed into parts by specialty and changed my life a lot. I know this is a lot of rambling but I appreciate if you see this.

You really got me thinking! I’ve been a teacher for a few years now but in the back of my mind I’ve always been intrigued by the medical field. Dream career would be pediatrician but Im still very intimidated by the schooling. I’m leaning towards nursing now but a lot of family and friends have been kinda discouraging me, due to how family oriented I am. They think the medical field won’t be flexible enough to raise children without external help. I really want to raise my own babies so I’m torn.. stay a teacher so I can have the flexible school schedule in the future or pursue medical because I find career wise it be more rewarding? Maybe you can make a video on this topic? Where or when do you see yourself settling down and if so how can a medical career be flexible when raising a family?

I'm a nursing student and my profs have always said when you graduate from nursing, they should give you a teaching degree too. Nursing is a lot of teaching, how to use assistive devices, health teaching, insulin, blood sugar, etc. Nursing will probably come very easy to you because of your teaching back ground. You could always end up teaching nursing courses in colleges or universities if you don't like the floor work. If it's really something you want to do, go for it! Your family will come around.

My aunt is a nurse and she has a 3 year old and another on the way. She's a pediatric nurse in a children's hospital. She works in the ICU. When she works, she works long hours but she really enjoys it. That also means she has 3-4 days off a week and during that time she usually gets to stay home with her daughter. It seems like she spends more time with her than my mom did when I was a kid. My mom has a normal 9-5 job like a teacher would have. Plus as a nurse she gets awesome benefits and even though she has to work holidays here and there, it seems like they're pretty flexible with her schedule if she needs certain weekends off. (She works one weekend a month)

Hey! I'm a 3rd year resident from Spain. It's interesting to see similarities and differences between your program and ours. We also have 26h call shifts. I was wondering during your clinics are you supervised by an attending while the patients is with you? At my training program, during our first and second year we are supervised more but by third year we have our own clinics.

I feel bad that your schedules so crazy, why are doctors on call? and just not scheduled enough doctors...that would eliminate doctor exhauation. Is there not enough doctors?

I love watching you. You seem so cool. Today I just finished my first month of pa school. 1/27 months down. And I’m just interested since I’ll be on the healthcare team in 2 years :) Ps. I also have crohns. Was diagnosed about 6 years ago at 21. I want to do a rotation in gi if I can and since I’m on medicines (been on remicade and cimzia and now on entyvio) I understand how meds are used for different things because I believe they can also be used for RA as well which is interesting.
