This 1948 short newsreel, "Weekend at White Sulphur," presented by Old White Productions as part of the "March of Time" newsreel series, highlights the famous and prestigious Greenbrier Resort located near White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. It was a popular destination for celebrities and socialites. The resort's history dates back to the late 1700s when guests flocked to the area to enjoy the mineral springs, believed to have health benefits. Over time, it became a favorite destination for the rich and famous, and it continues to operate as a luxury resort today. The film showcases the resort's grounds, interior, amenities, as well as some of its famous guests, including the then-Duke of Windsor, Edward VIII. The last U.S. president to stay at The Greenbrier during a presidency was Dwight D. Eisenhower. A total of 28 presidents have stayed at the hotel.
(Note: the Greenbrier is also the site of a massive underground bunker that was meant to serve as an emergency shelter for the United States Congress during the Cold War. The bunker was code named "Project Greek Island". The bunker is not shown in the film however as it was considered a state secret at the time of release.)

I was born and raised in White Sulphur Springs. I worked at the Greenbrier Gun Club when I was young. This video gave me goodsebumps!

As a native Mountaineer (West Virginian), we're proud of the Greenbrier Resort history. I took my late wife to the Greenbrier Resort for our 5th anniversary and we played golf all weekend (1994). Actually met Jerry West (NBA logo) and Slammin' Sammy Snead (Greenbrier Pro Golfer) while we were playing the Old White course. It's not cheap, but you pay to be taken care of and they do. So, in my opinion its well worth the trip.

Is this the same Greenbrier which had the secret bomb shelter ?

Yep. This video predates the bunker and hotel addition. Eisenhower had it done in the 50's

Yes it is. The shelter was outted by a reporter in 1995. However, most West Virginian (especially in Greenbrier County) knew of its existence for years.

I believe the new hotel/bunker is now at Nemacolin resort in the mountains of western Pennsylvania. This is based on my own research. Plus, not many hotels in the mountains have runways to land aircraft there like Nemacolin does.

@RicArmstrong there is a airfield within 5 miles of the Greenbrier Resort. However, with all the publicity about the bunker, it kind of ruined the secrecy.

@@SMichaelDeHart Yes, that was my point. Nemacolin has an airfield 20 feet from the back patio. I believe that's a good sign of a bunker.

Random notes: The name "old white" seems to fit well. There are only two people of color in the whole video--the bartender and one waitress. The waitress is wearing a uniform that looks like it came straight out of Tara--the Gone With The Wind plantation. Early in the video, the first picture seen on the left is Abraham Lincoln. I very much doubt he would have been welcome at Greenbrier in his lifetime. Jackie Robinson broke into MLB in 1947, the year before this video was produced. I am guessing he would have not been welcome to stay at Greenbrier either. I don't expect to ever find myself in West Virginia, but it would be worth visiting for the history alone. Thanks for this peek into the past, Periscope Films!

Yes, it's still there although it's no longer secret, and you can tour parts of it and I highly recommend taking the tour if you get there. Other parts of it are being leased out to a data center company so those areas are private. I was just there last October and it's pretty interesting.
