Hello!
Here's a typical week in my life as an Experimental Psychology PhD student at UC San Diego. It's busy, but I also love what I do. :) Hope you enjoy! ❤

Zoë, this vlog was so relatable!! Grad school is hard. Your 'mini-rant' was spot on. We have so many things to do and we have to figure out the time it will take to get them all done. It's rough out here for grad students! I feel your pain. I hope you're not getting sick! (We literally have no time for that!!) Stress can definitely take its toll on our bodies. Sending you good vibes ~💞

This is so cool! I'm a math undergrad student at UCSD, and it's so interesting to see what grad students do.

I'm a first year grad student (also doing experimental psychology!) and I TA for an undergrad stats class, and I am the exact same way that you described. Like I literally run around reteaching myself things 5 minutes before a student meets with me. I thought I was the only one, but it's good to know i'm not! I unfortunately do not have an office (I technically do, but it's one tiny room that's shared with 4 other grad students) so as I am reteaching myself stuff, i'm also running around trying to find an empty classroom to meet with students. Also, the first round of homework I graded for the stats class literally took me 5 hours. I've gotten it down to only taking about 2-3 hours now, but oh my gosh I never realized during undergrad how long it takes to grade every single person's work and write feedback on all of it. It's interesting to see how grad school would have been before covid tbh

Yes grading can seriously take so long, especially with huge 300 person lectures! But I agree - it gets faster with time as you get used to it. :)

Haha I also use the "cut the banana with a spoon on the skin" trick. It's great. Also your vision was possibly just the precursor to migraine? I also get migraines with aura - always fun when common ailments have similar attributes to serious issues! Way to add to the stress!

Hi Zöe, thank you for taking the time to share this video! I hope you get some rest this weekend ans feel better. I got accepted in a PhD program in Chicago, I will be starting this fall! Let me know if you have any good advice for future students, and suggestions of how I could spend my time now before classes start to be better prepared :)
@LifeWithZoeee
@LifeWithZoeee 4 года назад
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! Getting accepted is already a huge accomplishment! :) As for advice on how to start preparing, I would suggest reading papers related to your research area of interest so that you can get a strong foundation of background knowledge before you start to conduct your own research. Other than that, just chill and take some time off honestly. Travel, sleep, do hobbies that you enjoy, and spend lots of time with friends and family because once you start your program you won't have as much time off to do all those things. :)

Blurry vision is actually a very common occurrence before a migraine, it's known as a scotoma. I've suffered with migraines since I was 14 and can assure you it's just a migraine aura, not anything more serious.

The thing that you have is probably migraines with aura! I have those too and it starts off with little flickery blind spots in your eyes that fade away and turn into a full migraine. It’s not super serious but my doctor says it’s not completely curable either :/ Thanks for the helpful video!

@LifeWithZoeee
@LifeWithZoeee 4 года назад
I would start with just Psychology in college, with possibly an emphasis or concentration in clinical/counseling (the exact title and specification would depend on your University). Then, if you'd like to pursue it further after college, you could look into graduate degrees in something more specific, like family therapy, child psychology, etc. Hope that helps! You still have lots of time to try different things, see what you like, and figure out what you want to do. :)

I am going to switch my major back to Psychology ( currently in a BSW program at GSU) and hope to go Grad school, after completing my bachelors degree. All the best to you. 🌻✌😊

Do you think PhD in some engineering degree like for example PhD in ML is more difficult than PhD in psychology?
@LifeWithZoeee
@LifeWithZoeee 4 года назад
There's a lot of variation in every field, so it's hard to say. Also every university and program is different, and it likely depends on the specific requirements and prestige of the program. I'm also just honestly not very familiar with many other programs outside of psychology, so I don't have much to compare/contrast my experience with. Sorry I can't really answer your question!

Is it possible to hold a part- or full-time job along with doing a PhD program?
@LifeWithZoeee
@LifeWithZoeee 3 года назад
I know only one person in my program that currently has a part time job on the weekends, but they are fazing that out. Other than that, I don't know anyone else who has another job. I think even at some universities you have to sign a contract that you won't get another job (because they want you to be fully committed to them), but don't quote me on that. Either way, I think it's possible (part time, that is), but you would have to check the rules of your specific program. I totally understand the need for extra cash; however, PhD programs usually try to fund enough so that you don't have to get another job, since they want all your attention and resources focused on their work.

Good content! I’m going to jump in a master in psychology and aiming to get Phd after it. My situation is that I dont have Psychology background/studies before. I have master degrees in MA. what if I take directly a master program online (it doesn’t require BA in Psychology). Do you think this master program will allow me to get Phd later on?
@LifeWithZoeee
@LifeWithZoeee 4 года назад
There are several people in my program who do not have a background in psychology, so it's totally doable, even without the background. If you additionally get a master's in psych, then I think you'll definitely be set. :)

Jesus I know I wanna do a phd but I have ADHD and there's literally no way in hell I'll be able to do 3 hour classes. Did you schedule them that long but in reality there's shorter class options? (like in my undergrad we have around 45 minutes of class time and just meet 3-4 times a week. Makes things way easier).
@LifeWithZoeee
@LifeWithZoeee 3 года назад
Hi Sierra, Those are the only options in my specific program, but I'm sure it's different everywhere else! I'm also sure that the faculty would be willing to accommodate to your needs if you reach out. :)

Hello! Great video. Just wanted to know is it really fully funded? I'm an international student (indian)so I can't afford it at all even if it is partial.
@LifeWithZoeee
@LifeWithZoeee 3 года назад
Yes, most PhD programs are fully funded, and they give you a stipend to live off of (maybe $20,000-30,000, plus or minus some depending on location and program). Basically, getting a PhD is your job, so you are paid to do it. Hope that helps!
@Abhina09
@Abhina09 3 года назад
@@LifeWithZoeee thank you so much for replying! UCSD has a very rigorous coursework and I'm kinda intimidated by it. Was it very tough to get in? I have only done literature reviews yet still so I suppose I'm underqualified lol (sorry if I'm asking too many questions yip)
@LifeWithZoeee
@LifeWithZoeee 3 года назад
No worries, ask away! Are you talking specifically about the Experimental Psychology PhD program at UCSD? The coursework for that is not bad at all, but I'm not sure if that's what you're talking about, so I don't want to give you false information.
@Abhina09
@Abhina09 3 года назад
@@LifeWithZoeee yes that one only. Because the clinical programs are *probably* not fully funded. I like research also so I do not mind!
@LifeWithZoeee
@LifeWithZoeee 3 года назад
Ok great! Yeah, the coursework is really not bad at all. I'm just now finishing up my second year and am taking my last class, so it's just research and TAing from here on out. The grad seminars are pretty chill - it's usually about 8-15 people, and we read some papers and then talk about them in class. All the professors are cool, and you'll get and A for effort. The only class that kind of sucks is stats, which is taken in your first year. Most people (including myself) struggle through that class for two quarters but then you're done.
