Weekend Project: Stun Gun Potato Cannon 

This thing is so freakin awesome. It shoots so far and pretty fast too.

Thats just by far the best potato gun I've ever seen just because if the stun gun igniter. No open flames to play with.

We just made a video on one of these and they are insanely powerful. Especially when you put metal shards in the potato.

Broke down a 2 dollar barbeque lighter for it's clicker. works perfectly. don't waste your money on a stun gun. If you don't want to click just use a battery and a button.

You also can use a car ignition coil, a 555 timer and a 2N3055 transistor for the ignition source if you can't get a stun gun or want a safer ignition source. Though it will require a beefy power source such as an RC car battery.

You don't even need the Stun Gun. A grill ignitor will work just as well...Find an old gas grill and remove the red button you click to start the grill. When you take it out keep the wire attached to it and its ready to install.. Also,its a LOT smaller.

I was very intrested in this potato cannon so i went out and found some two inch and 3 inch schedule 40 white pvc (which was free) and built it myself. The only difference was I used a different ignition. I found a old bbq grill ignitor. it works great and the total amount of payed was 20 dollars and that was mostly cleaner and cement. Ill soon attach a response video

here in Philippine, we call it "BOGA" a PVC Cannon using electronic igniter from a cricket cigarette lighter, a denatured alcohol, and some tin can reducer (stuffed inside to create the combustion chamber) and it all went boom!

my modded version of this build worked off of propane instead of deodorant. it works great!!! thx kipkay!

Mine has a few differences, I have a double latched hinge connection with rubber gasket between the barrel and ignition chamber so you don't have to push the potato down with a dowel. Also, mine uses a barbecue lighter and trigger/handle assembly from a paintball supply store.

I love that "foomp" as the potato fires out.

If you shrunk that thing it would make a great self defense weapon! We used to call these things polish cannons when I was a kid...All you needed was some tin cans (pending on your desired length), duct tape, liter fluid, a match and a gulf ball. A nail size hole at bottom of cannon, squirt some liter fluid in hole, drop a gulf ball or tennis ball in completed cannon then just stick a lit match in the nail size hole and BOOM!

we have that similar thing here in the philippines, it's called "BOGA", our fuel will be a denatured alcohol and the igniter will be the ones being used in a lighter. but BOGA is being used during new year as a source of noise but it emits a luminous flame at the opening and usually has a back fire if you over sprayed the alcohol. so the police immediately banned BOGA and was used only at one new year event.

Bree Pettis did this sometime ago, but this one looks cooler, and the stun gun assembly is much simpler.

yeah same here in australia. what we use is a barbeque igniter, you know the button that you press in that sparks?? thats generally what we use. btw with a bbq igniter you dont need the bolts you just screw the igniter directly into a hole you have drilled into the pipes ignition chamber

On a hetero note: even the least of your videos are entertaining & informative. On this variation of a vintage back yard favorite, it's unlike you to settle for good enough, rather than perfect the concept. So I request another video to employ the following suggested improvements: 1. Clear PVC is ideal as it shows fuel evaporation and depth of the projectile. But is rare as also expensive. Mod: use standard S40 PVC & compensate the plunger depth while loading by measuring (or marking) the dowel.

the potato cannon thing has been popular for a while since people can get piping and spray propellants into them. I'm surprised you hadn't heard of it before.

What I found from potato cannons and their launching is that the potato needs to be put down to the very bottom of the barrel. Also, you can use paper towel as wadding so small potatos can fit. Spray WD40 down the barrel for more lubrication and longer shots. My ABS potato cannon can shoot atleast 200m.

I used a 4" diam. combustion chamber and a press-button barbecue replacement igniter. I also use hairspray in the combustion chamber

lol I'm glad a remembered this video. I've got an old potato cannon that is far from perfect. I already had the taser and all I need now are the conectors. Mine isn't clear but I am following a similar design.

me and my dad made a compressed air cannon about 2-3 months ago we got a potato 150 ft straight up and also shot a chain out of it and passed through a 3/8 inch piece of plywood at 100 psi

You went to all the work of making it clear and then you didn't even shoot it at night so we could see the cool light show!

I'm definitely gonna make this, but I think I'll change the combustion agent so I'll get a higher velocity on the potato, that way it'll go in a straight line for a longer distance and I'll be able to add a crosshair to it.

i think its called the night lighter bc if it is used in the night it might give a glow from the explosion of the spray and spark in the clear pvc

Ya!!! KipKay listened to my suggestion!

I used clear 4" and 2" clear schedule 40 pvc. Two foot chamber and about 5 foot barrel. 3 ignition points using wood screws and wired in series with 2 metal bolts screwed into the chamber that I spaced so that I can place the electrodes of the cheap stun gun that I use upon them. I placed a hunk of rubber material between the closely spaced electrodes of the stun gun and used electrical tape between the bolts. Used rem oil for propellent. I wear a glove so I don't get zapped. It kicks butt.

its what i used on my potato launcher... i used 2 AA batteries, two screws, and a push button. works every time.

hey kipkay im a big fan of your videos you make some pretty cool stuff. just a tip if you take a four inch peace of pipe the same size as your barrel and make a cutter out of it you can pre cut the potatoes and put them in the freezer they will expand slightly and create a tighter seal. also if you use starting fluid instead its much more efficient and safer it only takes a very quick spray rather than a three second burst

Nicely done. More original than the "pressing like plays a sound" trick.

Next time, use starting fluid. They will not only go farther, but it will sound like a shot gun and have a nice flame coming out of the end after every shot!

The ideal of the taser over a BBQ ignitor is that it fires a streams of sparks giving you a much better chance of ignition. Though if you can't get a taser you can just google 555 ignition coil driver for a circuit that will offer then same advantages of the taser.

that was awesome Kip, I saw a video where someone made one of these but they used the clicker from a BBQ Grill and i think they used raid bug spray as the propellant and it was LOUD. wouldnt an electronic clicker from a grill work? i think its almost the same as the taser but less powerful.

Best ratio is about 2:1; 4" chamber and 2" barrel. All this stuff is on SpudFiles if you want to learn about it. Tons of geeks there to answer questions too (check the Forums)

Hey guys heres a helpful tip, try and keep the combustion chamber to barrel ratio 1:2.5, so for every 1 foot of combustion chamber try and have 2.5 feet of barrel length

I used 4 inch x 2 feet clear pvc for the chamber and 2 inch x 4 feet for the barrel. Used cheaper white adapter fittings and I created two ignition points within with wood screws and used plain old speaker wire to connect the cheapie stun gun in series with the igniter points. Kicks ass! This gun on the video seen here is very under powered. One final thing, wear rubber coated gloves when testing and shooting, that stray voltage hurts the hand big time! LOL.

on VERY crucial mistake in this potato cannon, when grinding the muzzle of the barrel, grind the INSIDE so you have a funnel shape and you get a MUCH tighter fit. then when you push the button you get a "BOOM" instead of the wimpy "foom" plus more speed/distance with your projectile. And, just to nit pick the fuel, you want the propellant gas used a aerosols that is combustible, I turn the can upside down so Im not spraying deodorant/ hair spray coating my electrical spark emitters w/ crud

Replace the spud with a small paint can, duck tape to ensure an airtight fit with some lubricant and you have one hell of a paint mortar

Sharpen the end of your barrel so when you stuff the potato in, it cuts it to the inner diameter of your barrel = total seal.

tasers are expensive and can carry some legal red tape to get ahold of. You can go to any farm supply store and get a cattle prod. It works just about as well. The difference is a cattle prod will only make a few sparks a second, whereas a taser makes hundreds. Cattle prods hurt, but you couldnt really incapacitate anyone with one.

In Philippines tho, we call it "LANTAKA" except the potato part. It has the same concept focuses on creating a loud bang, like a fake cannon.

My 9 foot tall potato cannon had a Coleman Spark Igniter drilled into the pvc cap of the drainout plug. Ive tried the method with a piezo igniter rigged up the same way as this, even a long nose bbg lighter shoved up the cap. The coleman lantern spark igniter was by far the best. @doglover1neo Thank´s bro. Actually I am all rady made the cannon, and I tested with a T-shirt in. There is no damage, you can use it if you want, don´t worry about it. There is a only WARNING that i have to tell you: Do not put so much spray inside combuntion chamber, t-shirt shoot is too fast and danger, t-shirt can be 200 mtrs long after the shoot. Recomendation just press the buton on the top of the spray once during 2 sencon. Don´t shoot nobody, good luck...!!!

@ThePhailable you can get a stun gun from any flea-market or knife store for around $20-40 and the cement you can get at a hardware store. It's not Uranium haha the stuffs pretty easy to come by

Yea, me and a friend made one using a BBQ clicker. Fired it a few times, neighbors call the cops on us. Cop got to my friends house and said that the Spud-Gun was really cool but technically illegal in our county. But then he turns to us and is like "If you make it double barreled it will technically be legal." So of course we did that. And we used Spray Brand Starting Either. Combustion chamber was the same size as video but only took about 1/2 second spray for it to fire 2 potatoes 300 feet.

I sometimes use right guard. its really flammable.

drill a hole at the bottom and put a butane can at the end and connect it w/ the liquid electrican tape and push the can to ad the fluid and use it so u wont have to keep opening it

More voltage does mean that there will be a spark though. What you want is the spark, that IS the combustion.

Use a smaller barrel diameter, sharpen the end, and use a mallet to pound in a potato. This will cut an airtight cylinder of spud into the barrel. No air leaks guaranteed.

I built the spud gun using a electric grill igniter. It works but you make have to extend the wires out ( because of small malfunctions.)
