The packaging for Genesis products seemed RADICALLY adult and cool to a kid in the late 80s and early 90s. I used to keep some of the boxes out, I'd have the genesis box and the power base converter box out on a shelf. They looked like really high end electronics. Something about the feel of the console and controller felt so "big time" too.
Welcome back! Regarding the graphics, it’s possibly a combination of development time and cart size. More detailed levels require more memory and more work. It often makes sense to give some extra polish to the first level, it’s the one everyone will see and it sets the tone every time you play.
Streets of Rage was one of my all time favorites on the Genny. The music was the pinnacle of 16-bit compositions. Name one other game where you can stun enemies with...pepper!
Definitely. I first played it on a used 6-pak cartridge that I picked up from Funcoland for a couple bucks. What a great series. I’m beyond excited for Kishiro’s new game Earthion! I’m almost mostly excited for just the music.
Remember I was hyped about getting this for Christmas of 91. Game was too easy. Got to the last stage the very first day. Instantly regretted asking for it
That blue start button bothers me way more than it ever reasonably should. Love Streets of Rage, though. The second game was a pack-in with the Genesis I got back in the day and it was an instant favorite. A strong contender for my favorite game of that entire generation.
I remember getting my Sega Genesis for my 6th birthday and 1995. It came with the glorious 6-Pak cart. Booting up SOR1 for the first time was a magical friggin' experience with that intro and the soundtrack (same for Revenge Of Shinobi). Had also never played a Beat-Em-Up before, but I absolutely felt like a duck in water. Like you said, SOR2 is leagues better in terms of graphics, but I've always preferred the soundtrack and atmosphere in 1
I lost many many nights of sleep playing SOR, 2, and 3 when they were new. The controllers were so worn out that you basically had to hit each button with a hammer to use it 🤣 Good memories.
Oh wow! First you are back! And like John Wick you say you're back by dropping this gem of game on us! I'm in the category like you said, I think 2 is overall a better game but it's so hard not to play this game because of the stellar soundtrack! My friends and I played this game nonstop when it came out. Thank you again. And welcome back!
Have you checked out the genesis mini 2 6 button USB controller? It’s perfection to me. I put a brook converter (PS4/5) and it’s good to go on modern consoles and PC. I use it for Street Fighter 6 and M2 ShotTriggers games. Blissful stuff. Thanks for the streets of rage episode. Take it easy.
I have dozens of Genesis controllers, of various build quality and from many, many, many different localities.. Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia, USA, China, etc. And twice as many varieties of internal circuit boards. Sega did NOT do a good job of record keeping when it came down to revisions. 😅 I actually have several with that low quality/two tone Genesis print on the face, they are my personal favorite (3-button) if for aesthetic purposes only.
Ok I did a little sleuthing and it turns out they did indeed make make Blue Button SEGA Genesis 🎮. They were Blockbuster Video Exclusive and came in either 3 Button or 6 Button Flavors. However your version is probably still a knock-off since they didn't have the SEGA logo on top and had a Blockbuster Video Sticker on the bottom.
