Kids! Its Uncle Ben back again for episode 111 of Weekend Wankshop. On this episode, i'm going to show you a sick lick that takes advantage of the Troy Grady/Cracking the Code Downwards Pickslanting technique. This lick utilizes the downwards economy picking and upstroke string changes that DWPS allows! When you get the pro's and con's of DWPS, you can start taking advantage of them and making dope licks of your own. Take these ideas and shred like there's no tomorrow! Next week i'm covering how these ideas interact with sweep picking, so be sure to check that out.

Thank you Ben, I'm diving deep into troy's videos and yours and after 20 years of playing at the same level I'm finally beginning to see how to make that leap in technique and speed. Now all I need to to practice like a 15 year old again.

Thank you Ben! I have to say I've watched Troy's videos many times and could never determine if he was talking about the downward slant of the pick in relation to the strings or the angle of the pick edge to the strings instead of flat. You made it very clear! It doesn't matter- but that Troy is specifically talking about the pick- at any angle to the horizontal is angled with the fat edge down toward the ground- at an angle to the strings- vs. flat and parallel with the strings. That makes me now want to go back and re-watch the Troy Grady videos! I've been only working (thinking wrongly) about the pick angle in my hand- like you point out so perfectly at 5:00 - it's not about the edge!

HEY UNCLE BEN! I am having a problem with my guitar gear.. I suck at setting my guitar action. I know there are loads of "informative" videos about setting an action, but most of them are strange and don't explain how exactly it should be for low action in particular. Bought myself quite expensive guitar, tried to set action countless times, but nothing seems to work.. I rememberd your video about "your neck finish sucks", so i thought maybe you could do video of YOUR ways how to set action of your guitars? Thanks for help! Cheers! Love, Justin

NikeruJm74 Try to lower your action by adjusting the saddles/bridge gradually, repeatedly checking for string buzz on frets 15-19. Once it starts to buzz just a bit, stop - the bridge is set up (you might consider raising it just a bit to kill the buzz). Now it's time for the truss rod adjustment. Check frets 1-4 frets for buzz. If they don't buzz, tighten the truss rod just a bit (30-45° turn of the wrench), check, repeat until your frets start to buzz just a bit. Now loosen your truss rod just a bit to kill the buzz at the lower frets. Done. To recap: adjust the bridge/saddles to control the action/buzz at the higher frets, then adjust the truss rod to control the action/buzz at the lower frets. Cheers!

Actually that is a useful lick, as you can transcribe it into any scale and do quite a lot of useful descending runs that way. My problem is my left hand is keeping my right hand back, and I find descending licks much easier than ascending...

Ok, watched the upwards ones a la Eric Johnson Flipped Fives, and this, I'd like to see how you negotiate both upwards and downwards PS'ing during the same licks, using the magnet for close ups. I ask because I've been experimenting with different thumb movements and hand movements and incorporating some economy picking during higher speed picking to accomplish this and I notice a lot of variation in how other players do it as well. Curious how you manage this in your playing. Thanks

Now my problem is, and mind you I'm a full beginner, that when I have three note patterns, I'm stuck in between the strings. What am I going to do in this case?

My issue is when I downward pick on the high E, I can't do it fast for the life of me because my pick gets caught on the string and sounds like shit. I literally have to upward pickslant in order to have speed on the high E. I can only do it fast when I palm mute it.

I'm leeeeeaaving oooon and upstroke....don't know when I'll be back again. - Ben Eller Hey man, do you leave a fair bit of pick out like that normally, or are you exaggerating for educational purposes? I'm interested, because I've been doing this for a couple of years, and I've tried a few different methods with varying results. Also I find that it's sort of like golf or some other sports I've done, where some days I just can't bring it to the table, and some days I shine..... Cheers for vid :)

quick question, if i want to sweep a short arpeggio riff, do i still remain in "downward pick-slanting mode"? Or do i just sweep as i normally do, then revert back to the mode for regular playing after im done sweeping?

all this pick slanting business is overkill. its rocking motion with the wrist very relaxed that is key. guitarmastery has a perfect video on alternate picking, that shows it very well and he doesn't pickslant. His picking is effortless.
