Welcome to Crimson Guitars ru-vid.com... and welcome to Crimson Guitars www.crimsonguitars.com and another Weekend Workshop video with Ben Crowe.
About a year ago, Ben un-boxed and demonstrated the Robert Sorby ProEdge.
This machine has been the 'go to' tool when anyone in the workshop needs to sharpen something, whether a Luthier or a Toolmaker.
Now, after much use, Ben has fallen even more in love with this machine and has some new accessories and jigs to play with.

I bought myself a ProEdge for sharpening wood-turning tools and am very impressed. Quick, easy repeatable sharpening angles, made the best improvement in my skill levels.

The plate thing you swapped out for the knife sharpening one is called a platen :)

For the knife sharpening......most will take a Sharpie or other marker and mark the edge. Then, drag the edge at the angle you think it is to see just how much marker you grind away. This helps you set the proper angle before starting the machine. Once you grind all the marker you know you have the correct angle.

Ben, I bought a Pro Edge a few months ago based on your previous video. I even went so far as to demand to my fiancé that we add it to our wedding registry, however, nobody bought it for me so I bought it myself. It is every bit as good as you say it is. It is quite expensive, but it is worth every penny.

I feel like Ben enjoys sharpening tools more then making guitars :P

Great video. You already got me within the first let’s say 10. inured. But it was just fun to watch you till the end to see how much fun you have using that tool….

now you guys have a forge I assume your doing some metal working and if your using files and rasp in metal work you'll notice they tend to wear the teeth off much faster then with woodwork. However files and especially rasp are usually made of good high carbon tool steel so instead of tossing them, you can use this to strip the rest of the teeth and turn an old file or rasp into a handmade chisel.

hi ben, thanks for making these videos! can you sharpen/grind/repair a beat up corner chisel on the proedge? i've been looking for a mechanical way to do this and it seems like the sorby would be able to (using some combination of toolrests and hanging the chisel off each edge). do you think it would work?

You had me at several minutes, I have at least three sets of chisels I'm dreading looking at, cleared out about a decade of crap out of the shed today and just couldn't bear to open the boxes, I'll check tomorrow, they were in plastic so hopefully they'll be OK.

Hi Ben, I use my PE for wood lathe tools. To make belt changes quicker I have put duct tape down the back edge of the removable guard. It works like a hinge keeping it captive. I'm not sure if it would work with the pig tail for the buffing wheel in place though. I wish the thumb screws were captive too. I also have a magnet underneath which catches the filings - most of them anyway. Thanks for the video. I hadn't seen the knife mug set up before.

Ben, you often mention your homemade leather strop(s). How do you make them? what type and thickness of leather and how do you bond to the wood? Do you have a separate one for each grit? If so, how do you clean the grit off? Really enjoy your videos.

Just solved a problem I was having. Had the knife jig on so long I forgot that fitting it also involved swapping out the platen. Couldn’t get the tool rest back on for gouges... turns out I need to swap the platen back. Wondered what the spare bit of metal plate I had hanging around was! Cheers

Don't they make grinding wheels with a curved edge for doing the inside of gauges?

You're selling me on this despite the fact that I already own the Tormek, I don't like hollow grinding implements that are supposed to be Flat like chisels and plane irons and such.

It almost looks like this machine makes one of the more boring jobs of woodturning and woodworking a lot of un! I ordered a ProEdge and awaits delivery with great excitement! Does the snall and large knife jig fit the same collar?

thank you Ben . yes heat is a devil on tool steel of any type. wished the system had a way to use coolant with the machine yup its messy that way but sure saves your edges . heads up on the sander / grinders USE dust mask . i was trained as a machinists in the navy no safety measures at all ( if you killed one just draft another one ) . i would find as i showered if i took a corner on my wash rag and put it inside my nose it would be dark with the dust / metal / grit . so use mask . i did wound up getting the work sharp 3000 seems ok so far but your info was a great help to me thank you again Ben

+Mark Wright hey Mark, thank you for your support. We have no limits on the courses and try and help our students to build anything they can.. Like this though some projects will take longer than a standard course for most people. If you drop James an email at office@crimsonguitars.com he is best served to help figure out what can be done and when or call the shop and we'll walk through the options. I'm looking forward to having you at Crimson HQ

There are some things you can't sharpen with this, like carving tools with really acute angles (10-12 degrees is typical), the inside bevel of adzes, straight razors, awls, or as you said, inside of gouges. But the big advantage it has for knives over most knife sharpening systems is that you can slide the knife attachment sideways, and only have to twist it at the curved parts of the blade. That is a big plus, because pivot/slide systems create a more acute angle the farther away you pivot from the middle. And, of course, unlike a wheel, you don't end up with a concave grind. One minor niggle: You say 10 mil and 5 mil in the video, and it's rather clear that you meant milllimeter, not mil, which is 0.001". Because "mil" is already taken for a specific measurement, try to avoid using it for a different one.
@jaimeclifton9078
@jaimeclifton9078 6 лет назад
Art Heen - mil is mainly used in America as an alternative to thou. The British use thou only and mil as an abbreviation to mm. As he's English his term of reference was correct, to his locality.

One problem with this video…can’t see anything…your hand is in the way, or all we see is the back of the machine..

I can see the end glowing red at 26.40. that tip is now useless. Would dipping in a temper oil be better than cold water ? Id put money on it that tip is now soft. I guess using a smoother grit may help maybe going a bit slower i get your just doing a video to show the product. People with experience will notice those problem areas. maybe a constant stream of cooling oil is needed but thats kind of defeating the object of its simplicity. hm

It's unlikely to get to red heat that quickly. What is visible is probably a reflection of the orange sparks. It is easy to cause the steel to go blue, and that will ruin the hardness. I know from personal annoying experience in my early days of re-grinding axes.
