Weekend Wrench: 1971 Opel GT front suspension rebuild with Elana Scherr and Tom

New bushings, ball joints, tie rods, shocks, brakes and comedy. Follow along as Opel GT front suspension rookies Elana and Tom rebuild the front end with ease. Well maybe not that much ease. It turns out there are quite a few big challenges on this little car. Yes, the puppies make an appearance, and yes, we're fully aware there are smarter ways to have done this...but none that would be funnier. Thank you Gil at Opelgtsource.com for the quick shipping on our Opel parts and our replacement Opel parts when we ruined the first ones.

I won't lie. You did it the hard way, and the dangerous way. I'm glad you still have your fingers. If anyone reads this before attempting this project. PLEASE, check out how to do it properly and safely.

Had the header off of a 68 El Camino SS L78 to change the starter and my dachshund, Schnitzel, stole one of the ARP header bolts that the PO had installed. Found it in the yard 2 years later

Great video! You guys operate the same way as I do. Find something that works and go with it even if it isn’t the “right” way. The only tip I have for people reading this is to use power tools instead of prying the bolts out (at least at first). As stated in the video, the bolt holes are all super tight. The bolt threads will pull almost all Opel bolts out with an impact wrench. If that doesn’t work i wedge a box end wrench at an angle and pull out while loosening the bolts. I learned a few new tricks from you guys that I’ll use in the future. Thanks for sharing.

One trick is to put the control arm in your kitchen oven and warm it up a bit. Put the bushing in the freezer for a few hours or overnight.

This is classic youtube dramedy. The dogs ate the instruction sheet! The upper control arm bolt is also known as the bolt from hell. How did Elana not get a busted hand out of the leaf spring? Yes, I cringed, I knew what was about to happen at 20:40. 40 seconds of Nooo, Stop!!! I've done the bushing replacement on my Opel GTs a few times, usually with the whole assembly out of the car and with a come-along cable puller.

I can imagine this being a German car it is a super handler when all is mechanically right... I remember driving a VW Golf GTI for the dealership I drive for a couple of years ago and I loved it especially on curvy roads!

I'm only a few minutes into the video but already cringing in terror at the expectation of a fastener being flung from its resting place and finding someone's eyeball or front teeth. I only proceed with the probability that this video wouldn't be posted if mayhem were to occur. Starting the New Year out right!

I find it's always fun to hear the difference between how Opel is regarded in the US and Opel in Europe. In Europe Opel in the '60's - 70''s - 80's have the name of being reliable and very easy to work on. In America it's the other way round. I think it's got more to do with a born scepticism against foreign cars. Datsuns, Mazda's, Opels were really reliable back in those days. It was a pitty Americans didn't want to take to them out of, well I think, national protectionism.

To get the bolt out use a open end wrench behind the head and a air/electric impact gun. You can buzz it right out.

Elana and Tom, well done! Well, the PROCEDURES left a few things to be desired, but congratulations on the outcome. While you mentioned that excellent instructions are typically provided by Gil Wesson at Opel GT Source, the other source you might want to mention is the Forum at www.OpelGT.com. Specifically in this case, www.opelgt.com/forums/3a-front-suspension.1154/ and the "stuck" threads at the Forum top, especially www.opelgt.com/threads/front-suspension-leaf-spring-compressor-and-removal.26311/ And of course you are always welcome to reach out to the Opel Community there and on the various Facebook Opel pages, which I believe you may already be a member of. Later... Keith Wilford aka kwilford at OpelGT.com where I am the main Moderator.

Sorry Tom, that was really really dumb to think there was no tension under that leaf spring. I agree with Elana, you'd have done different if you where under there. Who designed it, actual engineers. Unlike Dodge, how had semi trained monkeys. Anyone who's dealt with tapers for a while knows they're always explosive, tapers are an all or nothing fits. That lower control arm would come apart like a U-joint. Press both sides out as far as you can and the centre will fall out. Why didn't you download the instructions, rather than looking like fools?

I have a challenge for you. A father was trying to restore a '72 Opel GT, but he passed away. It has been garaged for ~30 years, partially disassembled, but with the engine intact. His daughter would like to finish the project or sell it. She is a new member of OpelGT.com. She says the engine doesn't crank, but I think it just might be a seized water pump. She doesn't have the tools or knowledge to get it evaluated or get it running. It's located in the Torrance/Carson area. Would you be interested in helping her out, maybe get it running, and making another great video?

Seriously! you guys are so dangerous! Every and I repeat every spring is under tension. What you should have done is put a jack under that spring eye. Try that goofball shade tree mechanic crap on a bigger set of leafs and you will lose an arm or a face next time. next time have a person on hand that has done this before and wear safety glasses.
