Every year there's a Booker title where my first reaction is "nope, not for me" and then I end up wanting to read it - this year it's Headshot. It sounds so good! I'm in the middle of The Safekeep right now and I am enjoying the stmosphere but I can't tell where it's going.
I had very similar feelings about The Safekeep: I loved the first part, but the second part didn’t seem to advance the plot or develop the characters much. The reveal in the third part felt more tacked on than a natural conclusion to the narrative. I was a bit disappointed, actually, because the book had so many interesting ideas and themes, and some of the writing was really great, but by the end, I found it too contrived and melodramatic.
I loved “Safekeep” (and I loved that Nerdy Nurse Reads tagged it Horny Pears). I am mostly working through the Wainwright longlists myself. Thank you, Bob
Ahaha, yes! That’s the only name I can think of for it now! And I hope you’re enjoying the Wainwright books! I’ve just started on the shortlists myself!
I have been working through the Wainwright Nature prize and haven't dug into the Conservation prize yet. I've read five from longlist, three ofwhich made the shortlist, and I'm in the midst of one more. The Waiwright season goes so fast compared to the Booker.
I have not heard of any of these books unless I came across any of them when glancing through a list of Booker nominees, but I will have to look into them some more. I will say that I would be inclined to look into lists of Booker winners and nominees if I were interested in brushing up on my reading in this category. I am currently doing this with the Mock Newbery Lists that are on Goodreads. Thank you for sharing! -Josh
