@@royreadsanything am loving it Roy. Did you already know Hugh Walpole or did you come across him as part of your studies?

@RaynorReadsStuff I read a short story and then binged a load of the novels, about 15 years ago - never got on to the Herries saga though.

When you consider how much we read of Ulysses this past week, I'd say you read a great deal! I thought this Episode 15 might do me in! I don't think I realized you were reading The Time Machine this week until today. We could have had a chat! I really enjoyed it. I wanted to read The War of the Worlds too, but I just didn't get to it. You are making lots of progress on all of these events, once again! I'm in awe of you!

No I didn’t realise you were reading The Time Machine either. Thank you for teaching me about framed narratives 😊. You are right, of course. Ulysses took up a disproportionate amount of time last week. This week seems easier already! Thanks Pat, I’m also in awe of you 😊

@@RaynorReadsStuff you’re welcome, Debs. The way the frame works is that there is an outside, nameless narrator-one of the guys listening to the Time Traveller’s story. This nameless guy starts the story off. He introduces the Time Traveller. Then the Time Traveller takes over and his story makes up the bulk of the narrative. Then the outside, nameless guy comes back at the end, to frame the story, if you will, and he tells us what’s happened to the Time Traveller-that he’s disappeared again. It’s a story within a story. Frankenstein works this way too, as do The Canterbury Tales.

@@BookChatWithPat8668 ah so it’s the narrator who forms the frame. I see. I love learning from you. Thank you ☺️

@@RaynorReadsStuff Right. The nameless narrator, a guy invited to the Time Traveller’s house, starts and ends the story. The Time Traveller’s story, which makes up most of the book, is at the center of the frame.

I read 'Ulysses' last year, it's quite a puzzle, because of all the allusions, but it's well worth the effort. Did I like it? I'm not sure, but I did enjoy the challenge. I'm reading Sense and Sensibility and awaiting Janet Todd's book on S&S to read later in the month. I just finished "The Tale of Genji, a 1300 page monster. It's not a book I will read again. I too am reading Rogue Herties, but am a bit behind, but now Genji is out of the way I should progress. I'm reading a biography of Elizabeth I for Historathon. I think you did well last week in your reading, especially with all the fuss about the election. Our Tory MP lost his seat to a Liberal.

That’s pretty much how I feel about Ulysses. Happy reading Clare 😊
