I particularly like how you show the landscape around where you are, please maintain that. I also think my old man blood pressure drops when I see you sitting outside some cafe, having a drink. That's the life. By the way, I have conversations (aloud, but rather one sided) every night with the authors of whatever I've just read, be it poetry or a novel, I can't sleep without reading something, but then I have to discuss it, and I live alone. Although dead authors don't reply (everything worth being said has been said by those who are dead), I sense what their response might be as I turn out the light, and embrace my pillow. All the best to you, Brian, and thanks so much for sharing your life with us.

I think this is the most unusual vlog I have ever watched. It is so clever in that you don’t give too much away and hop from place to place without taking a breath. It must be the Irish in you. Thoroughly enjoy it and look forward to next week. Keep safe at the Chateau getting to giddy heights. 🍷🍷🇬🇧🇬🇧

foxes will dig down to get under edges so be warned need to cover nearly 12 inches down to keep them safe
@twvea
@twvea Месяц назад
The black netting looks like shade netting but 'roof' ideally should be sturdier with netting afixed because owls and small hawks can get in the pens. We have black bear, possums and racoons, not to mention fox that could get in your pen.. But in Virginia, US., we have to dig down 12" and install sturdy wire bent in an L shape with the shorter edge buried under the inner pen, just for the fox. HTH. 😊
@hepzib928

Stephanie Jarvis lost her whole flock to foxes this spring. Dig down!
@twvea

Here racoons n possums also will try and pull a head or foot rhrough the mesh if not small enough and munch. Bears can get into almost anything.. Pigs will also kill chickens and would plow right through that structure. Hope none around there. Had to put contractor wire mesh stretched tight across rafters of wood chix shed to keep snakes from raiding the eggs.. 😔

The vine pergola will look lovely, but one tip from experience: if you're going to eat under it in the summer, or use candles in the evening, think about putting a fine mesh cover under the vine canopy to stop the insects falling out of the vine & into your food/hair/the candles!

I was visiting a home in Portugal this week and the owners had a grape vine pergola. They took the vine down because it was making a mess with grapes that dripped and bees and bird boop. I hope Brian's meets his needs.

My 2p-worth on chicken run advice is, have it so you can move it around - unless the hens will be out free-roaming all day. Friends of mine have theirs in a run about that size, well it's just a perimeter fence. They move it around the garden every couple of months. The grass gets fertilised where the run was and the hens stay happy and disease-free. At night they go into one of those Iglu huts, which was bought 2nd hand. It has an automatic timer that locks them up safe at night and lets them out in the morning. ❤

Holy wow, just saw you have 20k subscribers! One thing chickens really like is things to climb/perch along and explore. Downed branches are perfect for this purpose. Digging in 20-30 cm of chicken wire around the perimeter will definitely deter chicken bandits.

Love the music! Thanks for taking us down the rural roads. The terrace is amazing. Re the chicken run: that netting will be worse than useless if you have predators. Good idea about the metal, but you'll need to bury it so foxes and dogs can't get inside. Go ahead and buy proper chicken wire. You can drape it from the bottom of the run, and stake it or cover it, out at least 18" so that tunneling predators hit it well away from the edge of the run - and give up.

Hello Brian. Genuine new old person here... 😉 Also bona fides previous chicken keeper (sadly at present I haven't got the space). Yes your suggested arrangement with the metal should do the trick and help deter Monsieur Reynard from his wee tricks. Have you got the birds yet? If not can I strongly commend maybe getting a few Leghorns, if you can find them. Lovely compact white birds, who have the great trick of continuing to lay in winter when lots of other breeds go off lay for a few months. Superb white shelled eggs!

Do you have a favorite author? Do you fish while camping? Or do you just bike in the nearby trails? Awww, take a pup home with you. They make great traveling companions. Well, mine does anyway. I'd love to have seen you chatting away to yourself. So glad you are going to put metal down to protect your chooks. There's nothing worse than foxes getting your birds as they are evil. They don't kill to eat but they torment them to death and won't leave anything alive. Are the two pups remaining as "Chateau Dogs"? Hey it's lovely hearing you talk French... very pleasant to listen to. You've done masses at the chateau this week between you all.

You have to save house from foxes. Here is an idea :Plates in the ground One way to secure the chicken coop is by digging smooth eternite sheets vertically down around the coop. To prevent the fox from digging under, it is recommended that the eternite sheets should be 40 cm down. If they are also to prevent rats from entering the yard, the plates must be dug 70 cm down
