@@weezjertime2324 I can’t believe I didn’t know about this until now. I also now can’t believe that Rivers didn’t get a co-writing credit on “Please Let That Be You” on RotR. Coupled with Cherielynn Westrich’s battle to get credit for “My Summer Girl,” I sort of am starting to think that RotR was just an amalgam of stolen snippets held together by some output from Matt Sharp rather than “his thing.”
This song touches me for weird reasons.... My grandpa (dad's side) was called Mitch by everybody. It's a name I don't hear very often anymore, but our last name is Mitchell, and people just called him Mitch. I didn't know him for a long time... but am thankful I did get to know him in my lifetime (Whereas my brothers were too young). He was losing himself to Alzheimer's and had good and bad days... I'm so happy to have memories of him fielding baseballs in the outfield with my dad and I, at the little diamond in a small town- Mansfield, IL, just outside of Urbana- with a populous of maybe 650-700 people. We'd hit and shag balls on a small little diamond near my grandparents' house. I keep a baseball he signed and personalized for me to this day- "Nicky #1 All Star" I believe it says. It sits on my mantle and always will... I loved my grandpa until the end.... No one should have to go that way, and thank god my dad dodged that gene. But like my grandpa, he also became known as"Mitch" to everyone for s long time. I will always think of them both when I hear that name anywhere. The only time people really called me Mitch was when I spent 18 unjust days in Cook County Jail... which was a horrible test of mental endurance that I feel stronger now having endured it. But hearing people call me Mitch was like a badge of honor, in a way. Anyway, I never noticed the line with "Mitch" until now and it just got me to thinking... especially with my dad getting up there in age and mortality being real, it's weird to think that there won't be any Mitch's left when I go short of a major accident. -- This is a great song that more people need to know about. I first heard the Rentals' "version" of it, but like this one more. I am pretty sure there's a session of just the two of them performing this, and maybe one or two other songs in a live setting...? It was on here at some point. That version is really good as well. Check it out if you haven't already. And yeah- as for Rivers not releasing good songs.... there is some weird complex or something, I don't know. even if it was once planned for the Jamie single-- all the more reason, honestly-- his song, and Thief, You've Taken All The Was Me should have been on the deluxe blue album or some form of a re-release by now. I have no idea how they missed the cut, but Let's Sew Our Pants Together made it in...
