The snare does not sound like that because this is a demo. That is the drum tone Patrick Wilson most likely wanted for this song. A lot of drummers dig that snare tone. It's tuned high and has no muting on it, and the wire is choked against the resonant head. He's hitting the drum quite hard, possibly using thicker sticks, making the snare wire almost nonexistent. Lars Ulrich did something similar on St. Anger, however his snare was tuned poorly, creating a sort of trash bin-like sound with lots of overtones (I don't know if that was on purpose or not). Producers change music pieces to appeal to a wider demographic, which is most liikely why the drum tone was changed. The album features a lower tuned snare with the wire a bit more loose, along with some muting to give it that punchy, pop drum sound.
The most interesting thing to me is how different Rivers' voice sounds. You can tell it's him especially in the quieter parts, but he almost has a metal or grunge (Chris Cornell) sound for most of it. It's interesting that he went with more of a "slacker" style (for lack of a better word) on their official releases. Just goes to show how versatile and talented he is as a singer.
Agreed, I think Pat's a pretty underrated drummer. He might not have much in the way of flashy chops, but what he plays fits the song and he is a GREAT power rocker! I always loved the power he could get out of a kit. Cool to hear how his old kit sounded
I just discovered this. Pretty cool, interesting. I think this version demonstrates what rivers has said in interviews that I have read that he is actually much more of a guitar player and soloist than what he shows on the first few albums. I am only familiar with the first 3 albums. He certainly shows his rock guitar skills much more on this version and his singing is a bit different. I think for whatever reason they decided to go with a cleaner and more simpler sound for the album. Guitar solos that are more melodic as opposed to bluesy rock licks, and cleaner vocal delivery with no yelling / screaming vocal break up. This version is cool to hear for the contrast.
Should check out their 4th album maladroit, it’s very raw sounding production wise like Pinkerton and definitely shows off his guitar playing more than the first three.
The producers who took this and turned it into the album version did an amazing job cleaning it all up. From the vocals to the guitar, they turned the distortion down on nearly all of it, and it worked perfectly. When this was out, to me, they were closer to the beach Boys, but a modern version. This sounds more like the other bands of the 90's, which is understandable, but the changes made Weezer stand out far more, gave them a more solid identity.
Holy shit. . . Anyone know why they took a lot of the more impressive and cool stuff out? I LOVED the "Heartbreaker, Lifetaker" at the end. Gave me chills. Why'd they cut that from the official releases?
I see what you mean, I love a lot of the little touches, but I do kind of like the beginning on the official release more, I think it makes for a perfect balance between the chill vibes of the first verse and the more aggressive tone towards the end, which is one of my personal favorite aspects of the song. When I first heard it I was lead in with the unique, laid back sound and then politely smacked across the face with the chorus
I love River's vocals in this. So much more heartfelt and sincere than in the album version. The vocals fit it so much more: it's a song about frustration and sorrow, so why shouldn't the vocals be a little rough and abrasive? That just makes them much more genuine.
Each time I hear this song, I love how subtly it grows and builds, after the solo its one gigantic eargasm part. I love both versions, but the demo renders me a more pleasant feel.
I like the final version of this song just as much as i like this one. But you and i both know that the guitar solo on this version requires a lot more skill to play
how much more skill? both are technically proficient at the same time lyrical. IMO i think blue album version is more timeless. More of a challenge to right a catchy solo, thats memorable, I.E. Brian May on Bohemian Rhapsody, versus Ygnwie Malmsteem "insert any song" still love Ygnwie dont get me wrong, but Van Halen is Van Halen cuz of the great songwriting, everything else is just sweet gravy
L0Kii Blue's baselines were all excellent because they were all written by Matt. Pretty sure most of Pinkerton's weren't. They are not as good because Rivers took control of the band and he wrote Pinkerton on his own without allowing the input of the rest of the band, which in my opinion, made Pinkerton's baselines and the composition in general not as good as Blue's.
Oh snap Oh snap Somebody’s demo Is crowding my disk case Somebody’s bad one Is making me ill Oh snap Oh snap It feels bad Inside [Chorus] Play that demo This disk is a heart breaker Play that demo This game is a life taker [Verse 2] I can’t continue Google Disney Princess sexy flash game pregnant Elsa rule 34 We’ll just blur [Chorus] Play that demo This disk is a heart breaker Play that demo This Bruce is a disk breaker [Bridge] Dear gabor I call you In spite of years of bad games You made seed It’s terrible Then you never released it [Outro] Play that demo This Bruce is a disk breaker
the song is so busy lmao so many things goin on, glad they toned it down a bit. there are bits though that i preferred here that i wish remained in the official release
this sounds more grunge-ish with rivers vocals. its a bit more busy than the album version, but i honestly dig it. im so glad they decided to add in the loud, whiny, guitar solo at 3:05. it's weird to not hear it in the demo.
i love this version so much more than the album version, literally from start to finish everything is better, rivers tone for the clean parts, the short licks he adds throughout the song(especially after first chorus), matt's harmonies are better, the snare sounds good, the guitar at the second chorus is better, the solo is MUCH more interesting and shows off his skill more, the variations he adds to the guitar part in the outro makes it feel so much more complete, and my favorite part is the chords being played at the bridge, idk why they took that out because i think it would fit in the album version just as well
almost had a more obvious reggae/ police type feel but filtered through 90s guitars pretty interesting, never heard this demo despite regularly listening to weezer/rivers demos
I like the way the bass and the guitar sound. The drums sound like they were recorded in a trash can. It's all snare and there's sooo much reverb on it.
